There was no music and while approaching the area I was focused on how much noise was noticeable and the reality was that if it were not for the spotlights you could walk right by the ice rink and not notice it was there (based on the noise level at least, disregarding the big white tents). At 9 PM the rink was cleared of about two dozen skaters, and the Zamboni came out. By the time we had changed from skates to sneakers the Zamboni machine had finished; probably ten minutes I would estimate. I watched and had hot chocolate while my friend and her daughter skated and came in and out of the sheltered area. Seven dollars for admission; didn't need to rent skates so don't know how much extra for the rental. At the peak I would say thirty people were skating; sometimes perhaps ten fewer or ten more. Mostly age eight to twelve I would say. Some adults, but I was surprised not more. Although I'm sure this was very much not prime time for skaters, considering how many pairs of skates I saw to be rented, noise did not seem to be an issue. It seems to me the bright spotlights are more obnoxious. On the other hand my windows do not overlook the rink, so hard to say objectively whether or how much noise can be heard coming from the area.
For what it's worth.
Rick BryanRick Bryanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05138003847680313736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1837176580996082182.post-92102055228709337312011-11-28T16:44:46.753-05:002011-11-28T16:44:46.753-05:00Hey Old timer...where you been the last couple of ...Hey Old timer...where you been the last couple of years? I have to laugh when someone suggests going to the TA to get action. The best comment I ever read on one of these ST blogs was "The TA couldnt run a bake sale no less ST/PCV". How true. Otherwise, everything you say could be done has been done. The only way to hit back at CW/Rose is through their pocketbook. I am joining in on the expenses side. Anything I can do to cost CW money, I will do. Including running my AC all day when I am at work. Maybe if everyone joined in and ran up CW's tab to run the place they would get the point.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1837176580996082182.post-3293899041089489402011-11-28T15:50:29.249-05:002011-11-28T15:50:29.249-05:00Red food dye on the ice!Red food dye on the ice!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1837176580996082182.post-17384396816054106402011-11-28T11:31:19.386-05:002011-11-28T11:31:19.386-05:00Pigeons don't eat peanuts.

They can pressure the TA. If the TA does not respond, they can organize their own group of people to pressure the landlord, and/or the TA, and/or Councilman Garodnick. That is democracy. One person who acts out by using more electricity than they need is just one person using more electricity than they need. It probably evens out with people who are rarely home who don't use as much as they are entitled to. If you want to be effective, you have to organize. Sometimes they're called "rough service" or "industrial" but, regardless, they burn between 5 - 10,000 hours on a 120V line (which is what we have). They usually cost less than a buck and they come in all of the other wattages as well. I have used them for a long time.

They don't have to be changed for years--even with spiteful usage! It's getting harder and harder to find 100w and 150w incandescent bulbs now so I am using them sparingly. I think you should keep in mind that if you run your air conditioner on cold days (lower than 60 degrees) you risk damaging the motor because it will ice up and burn out. Run the fans maybe, but don't cut of the nose to spite the face by wrecking your expensive appliances (and possibly risking a fire) just to get back at Rose. Let's do more positive things to get 'em. For instance, don't let them get away with hiding crime from the press (and scaring the folks in Gramercy to boot!) and don't let the press/media think that the ice rink is just dandy with us all and is a legal and noble think that Rose/CW has done for the kiddywinks. Rose and CW are very, very cunning, devious, slimy and underhanded and those are just their good qualities! Let's always try to be one step ahead of them!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1837176580996082182.post-78412989467775709322011-11-27T13:56:26.845-05:002011-11-27T13:56:26.845-05:00Those of you that live next to the rink, I underst...Those of you that live next to the rink, I understand your anxiety about it infringing on your quality of life. I used to live overlooking the basketball court before they checked residents' ID and was bombarded with f-bombs and dribbling and all kinds of yelling from the courts. Sure, it would be great to have money and attention paid towards upkeep and security or what have you.

Just a quick question and please don't take it the wrong way. It's really just out of curiosity. Of all the people opposed to the rink on this site, how many have kids? Again, I don't want this question to sound confrontational or snotty. Really just curious. Sunday, around 1pm. Surprisingly, not much noise, though there is a muffled hum, about on the same level (if not less) than a truck idling. The padding enclosure has really helped to keep the noise down. There was NO music playing when I was there, except some music erupted inside the tent with the tacky vending machines.

I sat down by the fountain (nice day outside!) to test out if I could here the hum from the rink. Yes, it's audible, but very low, certainly nothing like the "hum-from-hell" given off by the Joyride food truck when it wasn't hooked into electricity. Because of the acoustics of the Oval, where noise bounces off buildings, I could still hear a faint hum on the other side of the Oval, too. I have very good hearing, btw, so I could understand if others on that side wouldn't be able to hear anything.

As for the rink itself, it's small. Good for children, but I think adults would find it claustrophobic and quickly boring. There were, of course, a good number of children in the rink, less of a number of young adults, and even fever mature adults. Basically, this is a rink for kids.Stuy Town Reporterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05538426011607971633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1837176580996082182.post-52200810900546353702011-11-27T13:46:59.427-05:002011-11-27T13:46:59.427-05:00NY1News got back to me and they have corrected the...NY1News got back to me and they have corrected their reporting on the attacks that took place.
I see they also are running a segment on the ice rink and giving a very positive shine to it (not that I blame them because probably management got to them first). The landlord is here to make money, of that there is no question. That is the deal. Some of the "amenities" they have introduced interfere with our homes. Some enhance this place. I have been skating on both days since the rink opened. I see happy people of all ages, interacting with neighbors they never before met, some skating, some enjoying the scene through the fence. All are having a good time doing something healhty and being surprisingly not noisy at all. I hope the neighbors find the rink manageable and that it will be here for many winter seasons to come.Old Timernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1837176580996082182.post-39575576199972908142011-11-27T11:49:36.155-05:002011-11-27T11:49:36.155-05:00Regarding the posts regarding leaving lights on in...Regarding the posts regarding leaving lights on in an attempt to have CW spend more money, I have to say I agree whole heartedly.
