Lazy NYU Students Complain about Lack of Bus Service

Okay, depending on where you live in Stuy Town, it is probably a 15 to 20 minute walk to various NYU buildings around Washington Square Park. (I can walk to Chinatown in 35 minutes.) It really isn't that far and shouldn't be that debilitating to the young student body of NYU, who are now very upset at the lack of NYU bus service to and from this complex:

After NYU discontinued its bus service to Peter Cooper Village-Stuyvesant Town at the beginning of the semester, many students who live in Stuy Town brought their complaints about the change to the NYU Student Senators Council.

After hearing complaints about the elimination from several students, the Senators Council proposed to the university that the stop be reinstated.

In response, the SSC is currently working with the university to address the issue; recently, the council submitted a proposal to the administration asking to reinstate bus service to Stuy Town during peak hours.

More here.

Poor babies!

  1. As a handicapped student resident in Stuyvesant Town housing, I relied upon the bus provided by NYU. Had NYU not provided transportation, I would never have accepted the University arranged housing at Stuyvesant Town.

The hubris and lack of compassion exhibited in your notes to the post is amazing.

I would give anything to be able to accompany you on your 35 minute jaunts to Chinatown, but unfortunately those walks - and those to my classroom - are impossible due to my handicap.

Please think of those less fortunate than yourself when you flaunt your self-given sense of entitlement.

  2. It takes 15 minutes to walk to NYU. Longer when you stop at Starbucks...

  3. Hey, show a little compassion will ya! When you've been partying all night, boozing and puking til the early hours it's very hard to walk those few blocks to Washington Square. You people who work for a living and get at least 2 hours sleep a night after we students have passed out just don't know what it's like to suffer man! You try walking from 14th and First to Washington Square when your head is hammering from a hard night on the Miller Lite, Weed and bonking whoever she/he was. It's not easy you know.

  4. To the handicapped student: Obviously my light-hearted post is NOT directed at anyone with a handicap. That's a special condition and it's quite understandable that you'd want transportation.

  5. NYCTA sells a reduced-fare metrocard for disabled people.

  6. Just goes to show that maybe people shouldn't be so quick to judge. But I guess that may be too much to ask for.

  7. It is too much to ask to refrain from comments because of exceptions to the rule--unless you are saying that the majority of NYU students riding those NYU buses are handicapped....?

  8. Handicapped NYU Student: since you are not able to walk to campus and the University no longer provides a private bus, I guess you are relegated to the same handicapped-accessible public transportation options that the rest of ST residents are. Right?

Are we supposed to feel bad about that or does that just put you in the same position as everyone else who lives here? I think its the latter...

  9. I think the situation is that this person accepted housing in Stuy Town with the provision that there'd be NYU transportation to and from. Regular transportation probably doesn't have the same drop-off and pick-up points.

  10. To the handicapped student resident. Please don't take offense at our comments because they are absolutely not aimed at someone in your predicament. We are joking about the able-bodied students who consider it a hardship to not have transportation to the University from Stuytown. I have mobility problems myself at the moment and certainly don't think it's funny to have to struggle to get to where I'm going. However, that just makes it more amusing and at the same time galling that able-bodied young people are whining because of not having a bus take them a few blocks to school. I sincerely hope you get something sorted so that you can get to and from school. Peace.

  11. I think the NYU student who has a handicap and is fully entitled to be upset by the withdrawal of the bus service may have missed the point of the title of the post: "Lazy NYU Students Complain ...." It didn't say "Handicapped NYU ...." There was no offense to any handicapped students intended and it's a shame that offense was taken.

  12. ...and the anger should be directed at NYU--not us. The tenants didn't make these promises.

As a point of reference, the NYU endowment fund stood at over $2 Billion in 2007. Of course, since then they lost $24 million with Madoff and god knows how much else in the market in general (NYU has long been notorious for bad investment decision).

On the bright side for the students, at least they are still allowed to walk. Bernie spends most of his day sitting on a prison cot...

  13. Madoff, Tishman Speyer. NYU certainly does put it's money in the hands of some sleazy dirtbags! Too bad that the honest, hardworking tenants of PCVST had to get dragged into their shitty contrivances.
