Sometimes waking up very early in the morning, and taking a walk through Stuy Town, offers "interesting" sights. Like all the garbage receptacles overflowing. Rats must love this during the night. Below, a photo showing three overfilled garbage receptacles in a row.
A closer look at the worst offender:
One of the major complaints from tenants has been the piles of garbage that appear, post work hours and during the weekend evening hours, in the recycling area of buildings....
From a recent TA survey of tenants:
"91 percent of respondents note that recycling rooms are kept clean
between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., when maintenance staff are working, the same
number report that conditions deteriorate dramatically after 6 p.m.,
especially on weekends. An overwhelming majority indicate that vermin
have been seen in recycling rooms, where discarded items, frequently
containing food debris, overflow an insufficient number of recycling
bins. According to 89 percent of respondents, some tenants leave bags
of recyclable items in areas outside recycling rooms, while others bring
their food garbage to the recycling room instead of bundling and
disposing it via the compactor chutes on each floor."
With the burgeoning number of residents in this complex and outsiders permitted to enjoy and eat and drink at the Oval, it seems the only solution is to hire an evening/night staff to empty out all the garbage that overflows at certain times of the week. It's true that the morning shift does an exemplary job of clearing out all the garbage, but the evening and nighttime presence of such vast amounts of garbage is surely a feast for vermin and one that encourages their population growth.
When I was growing up here, there were no garbage pails all over the grounds (except a few in or near playgrounds), and guess what? There was no garbage.
ReplyDeleteNo, no, no. Trash is very....organic. We should welcome it with open arms. Much like we will welcome Oval Cafeteria....
ReplyDeleteI am often astounded at the magnitude of garbage this place generates. Where is this late garbage coming from? Passerbys? Tenants? Is this when security cleans out there cars, golf cars etc.?
ReplyDeleteWe have more garbage because we have more tenants (ie, students bundled into apartments). Also the opening up of the Oval Lawn, where picnicking and eating is allowed, shares the responsibility for the garbage around the Oval.
ReplyDeleteWe are ,beginning to look like Fresh Kills landfill used to look! I'm just waiting ifor the swarms of seagulls to arrive, but they would get stiff completion from the rats!
ReplyDeleteI agree that all trash cans at the entry/exit to the Oval Lawn should be emptied more frequently -- especially on weekends. But people can also use some common sense and simply carry their trash to a trash can that isn't overflowing. On the topic of overflowing and stinky trash receptacles, I would like to ask all pet owners to adopt a simple code of etiquette for disposing of pet waste. With summer coming I propose that pet waste should never be placed into a trash can that is near a bench or table where people will be sitting. Please be considerate of others and deposit pet waste away from sitting areas. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteSeagulls? Let's get a guitar, go to the Oval and SING!

This does not address the causes of the overnight garbage surge
ReplyDeleteThis happens on Sundays when people come back from their second homes. They're just too g-d lazy to bring the junk inside.

ReplyDeleteI don't think that's reason. I think the bins get stuffed by all the happy chappies who sit on the benches and drink their beer and eat their snacks. They do it late at night - quite loudly at times.
Who would drive home with garbage in their car, 2nd home garbage get real! Plus in the middle of the week? I will say this at least Stuy Town has garbage cans, try finding a city garbage can!
ReplyDeleteSomebody opened up every fire hydrant from 2nd Avenue to Avenue C along 14th Street tonight. Never seen anything like that before! The fire department is trying to close them all. Anybody else see it? I don't understand the mentality behind that. Seems like sheer vandalism to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if our crack Security cameras picked up whomever it was who opened up all the fire hydrants along 14th Street. Lthey should at least have been able to see the vandals from 1st Ave to Ave C.
ReplyDeleteI was passing by later and didn't know what the hell was happening, even thinking the Fire Dept had opened them up for some reason themselves.
ReplyDeleteThe DEP asked the FDNY to open fire hydrants because of a buildup of fluoride in the system. Read about it here: http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20120530/new-york-city/city-asks-fire-houses-everywhere-open-two-hydrants-each
