Can't Be

There's a post on the TA Facebook page that shows an Airbnb apartment (hotel usage) that is a room in this official promo for a two bedroom in Peter Cooper Village:

Here's the room in the Airbnb ad:

And a screen capture from the promotional video:

Now, I don't think this is any smoking gun exposing something nefarious. Surely not!  Most probably someone is just using official Stuy Town/PCV promotional material for their Airbnb ad:

BTW, if you want to rent this apartment for a month, it will cost you $9468!  Fantastic markup!  (I think.)

  1. I'm a big fan of AirBNB, as someone who travels a lot for work to cities where hotels can be extortionate; I have stayed in several AirBNB private homes and even found a long term cottage rental during a three month contract abroad. However, I don't want random, un-checked people coming in and out of our buildings. Are the people so flagrantly flouting the tenancy rules THAT convinced that management doesn't care?

I have to say, I felt a lot better about living in PCV before I found your blog and found out how bad things are. Seems like Stuy Town is suffering the most, what with the concerts and noise and constant attempts to eliminate the peace and quiet over there. My condolences to all.

  2. Why would a tenant do this? Doesn't the host think the guest is going to be a wee bit pissed when they arrive and find the apartment they just rented - for a small fortune - looks nothing like the model?

I bet Stuy Town is purposely putting these ads on AirBNB. It would explain the dozens of professionally decorated apartments currently available.

From the look of the listings it's obvious management isn't doing anything about the problem.

  3. I thought the idea of AirBnb was to save money by staying in someone's home rather than an expensive hotel. None of the listings that have surfaced are cheap. $9K for a month in PCV? No thanks! lol

  5. Isn't there a City law against these pop-up hotels? If Rose won't enforce the law, maybe they should be reported to the City?

  8. It used to be that anyone found violating basic rules of the complex with respect to renting out or subletting were identified and kicked out. It's truly amazing that CW & Rose are allowing this renting out to continue. If they kick the violators out, would that be like a 'churn'? That is, couldn't they claim that the apartment was vacated & raise the rent again?

  9. This may be a bit off the topic but does anybody know if there's any way for new tenants to find out if their apartment is rent stabilized? Is the leasing office obligated to give out this information? Also is the history of a rent regulated apartment known by some government entity that can make sure it is being rented at the legal rate?

  10. It makes security look foolish when neighbors on Facebook can find these hotels and identify the tenants but the Rose-Rent-a-Cops can't. So much for the "award winning security" we have. A joke I tell you! A joke!

The landlord is supposed to file the rent annually with the DHCR (Department of Housing and Community Renewal) and give a copy of the rent info to the tenant. Right now all the apartments are rent stabilized.

    As per this link:

Access to Your Apartment's Rent History

Apartment rents are registered annually by building owners with DHCR's Office of Rent Administration (See: Rent Regulated Building Search). Under law, the rent information provided is confidential and can only be released to the apartment's legal tenant, the building owner, or their authorized representative.

You can access the rent history of your apartment in one of the following ways:
    1.
Call the Rent Infoline at 718-739-6400. The rent history will be printed and mailed directly to the apartment/building address.

    2.
Visit a Borough/District Rent Office in person and bring proof of tenancy such as a lease, utility bill and a photo ID. You will be required to complete an Access to Records form and the rent history will be printed and given to you at the office.

    3.
Mail an Access to Records form to the attention of "Records Access Officer" at Gertz Plaza, 92-31 Union Hall Street Jamaica, New York 11433. You must include proof of tenancy. The rent history will be printed and mailed to you.

    4.
If your name and tenancy is currently on file, you can access your rent history by email, by contacting ORAFoil@nyshcr.org. If you are a new tenant, and are not on file with our office, you will need to scan and attach proof of tenancy.

  16. I hope the IRS is aware of all these "hoteliers." Isn't there a bounty for turning someone in? I'd do it in a heartbeat.

  17. These hoteliers should be required to post their Tax IDs, just like real ones have to. Otherwise, the IRS is going to be digging quite a bit. How do I know? I work for the IRS, that's how.

  18. I find it commendable that ST/PCV is promoting interracial marriage. Truly times they are a changing!

  19. In this official promo in Peter Cooper Village is looking modern & luxury but this is for vocation right maybe up-to few days we will stayed there for. It's the same experience or like the star hotels right? What is the way & what are you saying about exactly?
