Our Little Dictator: "There are certain times we should infringe on your freedom."

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Sunday: Sometimes government does know best. And in those cases, Americans should just cede their rights.

“I do think there are certain times we should infringe on your freedom,” Mr. Bloomberg said, during an appearance on NBC. He made the statement during discussion of his soda ban — just shot down by the courts — and insistence that his fight to control sugary drink portion sizes in the city would go forth.

And just a reminder:

  1. Bloomberg should go buy himself a little country where he can rule and dictate to his cold little heart's content. Preferably someplace with scant populace so he wouldn't be in danger of a bloody coup! Or maybe not ....

He does not belong in America. His mentality belongs in Soviet Russia or some other type of non-democratic regime. His views are antithetical to everything this country is all about. He wipes his bottom with the Constitution. He is now trying to buy gun control and I have to admit that whilst I am against assault rifles, etc., I can see that Bloomberg would make some citizens feel all the more protective of their Second Amendment rights! He is the wrong person to be advocating for gun control, just as he is the wrong person to be Mayor of New York City. A vote for his corrupt little puppet, Quinn, would be a vote for more of the same. Let us NEVER FORGET that she overturned the will of the voters to let Napoleon buy his illegal third term. Also, don't forget he wants drones hovering by our bedroom windows soon!
BTW, that is a great piece of photoshop, STR!

  3. I have said many times that Bloomberg reminds me of a modern day feudal lord who believes he knows what is best for the rest of us (a.k.a. ,his peons) and, therefore, has the right to dictate to us about anything since he knows best. In the World According to Bloomberg, pesky things like the Constitution are to be ignored when a conflict arises with one of his edicts.
Amazing transformation for a Jewish kid who grew up in a middle class family .

  7. While Bloomberg's phrasing wasn't perfectly tactful, the sentiment is embodied in the very fabric of our nation. We are a republic, after all, who founders deplored "mobocracy" and deliberately set up the Senate and Electoral College as antidemocratic bodies. Eminent Domain is the government "knowing better" than you personally what to do with your land; nutrition facts requirements restrict the right of producers to sell their product as they see fit; drug, gun, and alcohol laws restrict what we can purchase; sin taxes are called that because they punish a behavior that the government has decided is bad; the Supreme Court desegregated the schools.

Point is the quote is a rather accurate portrayal of one function of our government in the presence of societally inefficient Nash Equilibria.

  8. Ordering or selling a large size soda has nothing to do with "mobocracy." Yes, we have parameters of what we can do as citizens, but we don't need more of them. Bloomberg is over-reaching, and those who welcome his nanny state proposals simply want a master.

  10. If Quinn gets on the ballot, I will hold my nose and vote for her repug opposition. I think she is such a despicable human being and would be as bad as, if not worse, than Bloomberg. Did anyone see the article about her in the NYT today? She has a lot in common with Bloomberg inasmuch as he is a classless lowlife who made life hell for those who worked for and around him. New York deserves better than she and we ought to make sure we get it. She is totally in the pockets of the developers and has no conscience about perverting democracy by giving Bloomberg his illegal third term and subverting the will of the people. Latin American and African dictators for life could take lessons from Quisling Quinn in order to hone their tyrant skills.
