PCVST: 5,000 Additional Tenants!

Someone over at the management office let out the numbers. In a recruitment search for a "Tenant Liaison" position, PCVST management wrote that the complex now houses "a residential population estimated at 30,000."  While the exact numbers have always been vague, the Wikipedia page on Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village approximates "over 25,000" residents, which is the number I'm familiar with. Yes, 30,000 is over that amount, but in approximations one would expect a possibility of, at most, a thousand or so more, but not five thousand, otherwise the notation would mention 30,000 and not 25,000. Even more bizarre, Realtor.com gives the number of residents at 20,630!

Whatever the exact numbers, it comes as no surprise to anyone living here that we've seen a population growth, with, chiefly, students who tend to occupy apartments with three or more bodies to an apartment. Such a population growth strains the resources of PCVST where maintenance can never catch up, and everyone's quality of life is lessened. It should be noted that it's illegal for there to be more than three unrelated tenants living in a single apartment.

  1. When did CWCrap and Compass Crock ever do anything legal? When did our elected so-called representatives ever do anything more than a mild finger-wag? The corruption that runs this place runs deep and includes the Gov and City Hall. They all are on their knees in front of the RE Cabal. Keep on suckin' guys! It's what get ya up the ladder of [corrupt] success!

  2. I don't think 30,000 is so unlikely a number, although it's probably exaggerated a bit (CW probably rounded up). Aside from the sardine apartments, there's been an increase in families in PCV. On my floor, after an elderly widow passed away, her apartment was then rented by three adults and now by a family of four. We have a similar situation in other apartments.

  3. Tenant liaison--does that mean Donalda Habersham is leaving?

  4. To confirm that number just observe the 24/7 operation of garbage removal. The garbage transfer station & the use of elevators to handle the garbage are both disgusting & bothersome.

But go back decades and that elderly widow was probably a married mom with a couple of kids.

True, which means that if you to back to the 1950s and '60s, because of all the children the population here was probably higher than 25,000, which is about twice the number of apartments. In those days, there were very few people here living alone. But the point is, how many people live here now? I don't know if anyone has a true count. If management doesn't maintain infrastructure, this affects us all, which is what we're seeing.

  7. It's irrelevant how many families with kids lived here before. There is no comparison to "what was" and "what is" today. When ST/PCV was built, you had a solid 1950's dynamic in place. Women generally stayed home, Dads worked till 5 PM and the kids went to school, and then populated the playgrounds until 5 PM or so when it was time for family dinner. During the summer, everyone headed outside to the benches, but generally wrapped up the evening between 10 and 11 PM. That also meant that apartment living was way more predictable. Kids were in bed by 9 or 10, and there was little noise during sleeping hours. Even as the kids aged into teens and young adults, there was always the specter of parental supervision not too far away. Today, almost NONE of that dynamic exists, and I don't need to explain how or why. The fact is, we will never again see a homogenous community like PCV/ST was at its inception and growth, and no transformation into tenant ownership will easily change that, or even move it in that direction for quite a long time (if it ever actually happens).

The point was whether 5,000 more people than previously thought are actually living here, not QOL.

  10. So funny when first reading 5,000 Additional Tenants since that is how our building feels. Feels like 5000 people live here and 200 live right above our flat.

TAKE SHOES OFF. Take shoes off. CLICK CLICK CLICK. Boom. Click.

This should be the ad we make for PCVST. It's a hilarious joke that would do well on SNL... click click bang boom. Stop the running 4 kids living above me.
