Comments from those interviewed for the article. Pay attention to the answer from Rocco.
Also note the dorm/college comments. As if we needed confirmation.
Our landlord, BLACKSTONE, can't handle Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. There is a lack of enforcement of certain "rules," and no amount of notice to this alleviates the problems. We are continually being told half-truths and fabrications. And we have no viable Tenants organization, despite our TA asking for dues all the time. So far, the politicians have proven to be basically useless. A typical New York story.
And then there is this too!
ReplyDeleteFitness center: $950 per year, $299 for students
i thought they are grad students meaning we are all adults and should pay the same rate! We pay three times as much for that gym than the students do and they also get sign up discounts!
We should all quit the gym!
STR thanks for the article. Its a good read on perspectives here.
ReplyDeleteCWC/CR never has more than three roommates on the lease. When they do have nameplates on the doors of these dorm apartments, if you notice, there is always a max of three names. This is probably the conversation at the Leasing Office: “You have five roommates? Just split the rent between the three roommates who are on the lease. Wink, wink.” Legal issue solved.
ReplyDeleteDUH
ReplyDeleteEveryone from students to families like the green space. No one likes the amenities.
And YES it most certainly is obvious they are breaking the law. We don't just need this investigated - we need this corruption stopped and those guilty indicted.
This is to unbelievable already.
Pack'em in, ship them out, raise the rent. You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around, that's what it's all about?
ReplyDelete2:34 you are right. But anyone who does due diligence in following the money could easily expose this. Plus NYU is a constant leaseholder since they subsidize it all so technically maybe the apartments never truly turn over.
ReplyDeleteWhere is Cyrus Vance in all this or is this too neck deep in corruption it could wipe out a dozen low and high ranking politicians that no one wants to stop this?
ReplyDeleteBought and paid for

Rallies, picket signs, bus trips to Albany using our valuable time is no match against their dollars and they use us for show. Tell them no more with your vote!
They falsely advertise apartments claiming amenities without saying they cost extra, or saying a building has a gym, or a building has on-site concierge, which we don't find out until we got here.

2:34 OF COURSE! And it's not illegal to say that Sally is my friend from Philly. She's staying with me, she's my friend, for 5 months. + 2 + 2.
ReplyDeleteSo what? What are you going to do about it?
ReplyDeleteOf course they are violating the law. However, they have a pass from all the local politicians (Garodnick, Hoylman and Kavanaugh) and the TA board. Given this collusion there really isn't anything anyone can do about it. A new TA would be a good start.
ReplyDeleteYes it's a law but it's rarely enforced in NYC. A neighbor would have to file a 311 complaint and someone would have to show up from the DOH to write it up. If that happens, no stiff penalties for the landlord. Usually all that happens is that the extra roommate has to get evicted.
ReplyDeleteYou'll get nowhere fast pursuing this line. With rents this high, the city just isn't interested in putting people out on the street.
4;12. The rent negotiated and rent at signing is muuuuuuuuuch higher. Why is that Mr. CW and Mr. CR.
ReplyDeleteOf course CWCapital is breaking the law. When aren't they?! Everything they do around here is illegal including the stuffing of 14 dudes and bros into a one bedroom apartment converted into a five bedroom complete with bunk beds. And one toilet... if you don't count the stairwell, lobby or bushes. We can all thank Andrew MacArthur the Winter Wonderland Ice Capade King for this hell of an existence.
ReplyDeleteGarbage in. Garbage out.

ReplyDeleteThis particular NYC law is mostly ignored and doesn't even specify a penalty. But after multiple 311 complaints about an overcrowded apt, a DOH inspector will do an inspection and write up a violation if the overcrowding is witnessed. Usually the extra roommates are evicted.
Same deal with illegal hotels. you’re supposed to call 311, and a task force will take it from there. The key words to drop are “illegal hotel.”
Mr. Guterman , what are you waiting for? You must know there are thousand of tenants willing and able to buy their apartments or another apartment to LIVE IN, NOT FLIP. LIVE IN for many years. Go door to door, hand out flyers, mail a mailing and get on it.
