Video Released of Attempted Rape

More on the incident or rather the rumored cover-up:

http://gothamist.com/2015/06/08/nypd_releases_video_of_suspected_st_2.php

This doesn't pass the smell test, however:

"An NYPD spokesperson told the website that in this case, Stuyvesant Town was omitted from the department's press release 'because it’s the address of the victim of a sex crime.' The spokesman added, 'We don’t mention the address of the victim, especially the victim of a sex crime. Stuyvesant Town is in the Gramercy section of Manhattan.'"

How is mentioning Stuy Town giving the address of the victim of a sex crime? There are a lot of buildings in Stuy Town. Wouldn't being more specific than "Gramercy" be a better clue? Maybe someone saw the alleged rapist-in-training in or around Stuy Town that night.

The crucial info, however:

"Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577. "

  3. WOW

That is one of the worse attempts at a cover up.

The NYPD 13th precinct just lost all trust when it comes to how they treat residents of Stuyvesant Town working class and NYU Stuy Town Residence Hall.

Gothamist seems to keep its press integrity intact by printing a second article instead of altering the first article as they were probably pressured to do by parties protecting RE interests.

Town & Village, oh Town & Village, please stop rewriting your article or letting others write your articles as you did with the crane collapse at the construction site for the office bunker. These cover ups are not making your "newspaper blog" look legitimate. Always keep the original wording as published and print corrections when necessary in additional blurbs, like the New York Times does.

This is a massive cover up that needs investigation that includes all activities in Stuyvesant Town by the NYPD.

Though Wikipedia should never be used as a final source of THE TRUTH, the above article seems very knowledgeable. Certainly most people who live around here would agree with the boundaries of "Gramercy" as stated in the article.

Maybe the TA should start handing out pepper spray and "what do do if you are sexually assaulted" fact sheets in front of the leasing office.

If de Blasio and all politicians want to control the press perhaps they could do it without hiding behind a press office of spokespersons, public relations firms and lawyers, and say it himself in his annotations.

  9. Off topic sort of

I agree with De Blasio -- the tax credits and rent regulation should not be linked in Albany. Linking good with bad is no way to "get things done" and part of what has to change. Rent regulations are too important to be linked to anything else.

  14. True Story.

Last year a Stuy Town neighbor was on their way to meet with a lawyer about Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town when the undercover NYPD 2Y 6W or 2W 6Y taxi they have lurking here knew when to be at the corner, raced in to get the fare and proceeded to interrogate during the ride, scaring and intimidating. They took down the medallion number and got the hell out of the taxi and ran.

I lost contact and think they moved but if they are reading this and Preet investigates PCVST I am sure they would come back and testify.

  21. Nobody in ST-PCV is criticizing NYPD for not giving out the address of the victim. That's a sleazy sidestep, NYPD spokesperson. The criticism is that the location given was the vague, even misleading "Gramercy section" instead of the more specific and accurate "Stuyvesant Town."

  22. Under cover taxis have been in NYC forever. It is nothing new. I have seen one circling in front of Starbucks. It is freaky when you spot them.

If the landlord is using them to spy on tenants that is disgusting. Here is how you can spot them and avoid them.

    http://www.businessinsider.com/nypd-undercover-cops-taxis2011-11

If you are planning to drive in New York, you need to be even more careful around some cabs than others. And that is because these cabs are carrying New York's finest.

As New Yorkers know, NYPD has been using taxi cabs as undercover cruisers for years.

There is something very disconcerting about blue and red lights and a distinctive cop car phaser coming from a yellow taxi; in our case it was a Nissan Altima.

NYC The Blog reports that there are some distinctive characteristics to identifying a taxi cop:

License plate numbers typically begin with T800.

Medallion numbers begin with 6Y or 2W.

There is no partition between the front and rear.

They never stop for passengers (obvious reasons).

Seeing two people in the front and none in the back is another great hint.

  26. Unbelievable! Based on all the warped media coverage I have seen so far I can't believe this happened in StuyTown I just saw a network TV news report on this a few days ago and they also reported the attack happened in Gramercy Park--the graphics on the screen and the pictures they showed were al Gramercy.

They were standing on the corner of 22nd St and Lex, implying that was where the attack happened. They interviewed two female investment bankers who live on the block, and they were standing on the corner of 22nd St and Lex in back of Baruch College. The women were of course very concerned for their own safety since they come home at 2AM many nights, especially when told there was a rapist in their neighborhood or block.

NOT ONCE did they say the attack happened several blocks and an entire neigborhood away. Does the media not know or do they just not care that when you give people the wrong information on crime locations that they are leaving the people who are in the locations near to where the crime is happening more vulneable?

A wealthy real estate broker's rent stabilized apartment.

How did you find this apartment [an eight-room spread at 150 East 72nd Street]?
I knew all the rental buildings and this was the only one I wanted to be in. When I got the apartment, in 1962, the rent was $400 a month. It went up legally whatever it could go up [according to rent-stabilization laws]. Now it’s just under $2,000.

    That’s a pretty good deal.
Yes, isn’t it? Wonderful. My social security pays my rent.

Did you ever think about buying?
No, no. I felt so lucky that I had this opportunity to rent. If this were a co-op, my maintenance would be so much more. This way I can have paintings.

It was on purpose reported that way, misleading, left Stuyvesant Town in the dark and in danger and the reporting made Gramercy Park scared of being in danger, unnecessarily fearmongering. They certainly staffed with the right people willing to fore go safety for this latest Gramercy Waterfront luxury housing plan.

Yeah, I feel the same way. The whole city really has become untenable. One can't drive anywhere anymore (unless at 3 am) and avoid a traffic jam. As far as the Sty is concerned, it was always a reprieve. This is what happens when you go from a widow living in a two bedroom apt to eight frat douchebags living in a two bedroom. Multiply that by the thousands of apartments we have here and you see the result. You can't even walk in the Sty without inhaling people.

The situation will get better (and worse, from a crime perspective) but it will take time. We've seen the beginning of the end of proactive policing. This will lead to a return to the 70's and 80's (I realize current carpetbaggers inhabiting the Sty have no idea what I'm talking about). Once we return to the NYC of old, these hoes and bros will take their tattoos and beards back to Indiana/Ohio/michigan and maybe we'll be able to breathe around here again.

Try living in the EV where you if you're lucky might have one skinny tree in front of the garbage cans next to your trash lined stoop. Compared to most places StuyTown is like a lush wildlife refuge, but people still complain about the dogs, the squirrels, the pigeons. The rest of NY has rats and mice. People here complain when a couple of washers or dryers are broken, but be grateful you don't have to walk a few blocks to do your laundry. Things aren't perfect, things could always be better, but you really need to put things into perspective or risk coming off as a bunch of spoiled, overprivileged brats, just like the NYU students you like to criticize every day. It's time to get some gratitude in that attitude.

Problem is you have many tenants who have been here for years and see what this complex has become. It's called "Death by a Thousand Cuts." You may fool recent tenants, but not the others.

So tenants should be now show gratitude for MCIs, rent increases on "the New Stabilizers," dog crap and piss all over the place, garbage on the walkways and green spaces, noise from construction and late-night party animals, recyclable areas crammed full, cracked pavements, more and more people packed into apartments and the general wear caused by an overflow of a population, etc, etc.

I didn't get close enough to hear what they were talking about. Also. the taxi has a fake ad on the roof. It's very generic and stupid-looking, like clip art from Windows 95.

  71. I hate this place soo much that I am looking to move. I am a RS tenant and I have HAD IT! Too much aggravation, where it is not worth it anymore. This place has been officially destroyed, and there is no looking back. See ya!

  72. Wow, well I guess I was wrong. The NYPD is definitely doing some collaborating with campus security and campus security McClellan and Dan are always talking. Some cahoots are stirring between those three.

  73. Harassing and spying on tenants. Despicable.

  74. My kids and I were behind two undercover cops tonight on First Avenue Loop entrance when he saw they were carrying jackets over their guns in holsters. Two more undercovers, a man and a brunette woman, both with guns too then met up with them walking south. My kids do not need to see guns in Stuyvesant Town!! This place has really changed for the worse. Have a good weekend all.

  75. What's all this stuff about "undercover taxis?" I had never heard of it before I read this blog. If they are undercover cops posing as taxi drivers to keep an eye on the property and keep us safe, then I don't see a problem. However, from a couple of the comments I have seen above, I get the impression that these "sleuths" are not our friends. Could somebody please explain to me what this is all about? Thank you.

  78. "The newly formed "management company" tells the third party vendors to spy on tenants and tell management if and when there are deaths of the elderly who is on the lease "

Sorry, this does not make sense. If a parent dies, you are under the lease obligation to inform CR so one does not need a third party to "spy" on you to get this info to CR. If you do not tell (what, you sneak the body out, move in your son?), guess what, you are in a major lease violation and are subject to eviction under NYS RS law. The issue is the question of succession rights. For every succession case now, CR will take you to Housing Court no matter how good a case you have and if you lawyer up, the fee will be around $35,000, chump change for CR. Good luck in trying to get that fee back to you even with a positive Court ruling.

  79. My 14 year old dd walks to school & home Baruch, MS 104 daily. This past 4 to 5 weeks, she's been approached and harassed several times near the entrance of peter cooper - near duncan donuts area and the old Essa. Punks trying to grab her and asking her for drugs or to buy drugs.

  80. I still want to know what these undercover cops/taxi drivers are all about! Are they looking after us or out to get us?

  81. :Last year a Stuy Town neighbor was on their way to meet with a lawyer about Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town when the undercover NYPD 2Y 6W or 2W 6Y taxi they have lurking here knew when to be at the corner, raced in to get the fare and proceeded to interrogate during the ride, scaring and intimidating. They took down the medallion number and got the hell out of the taxi and ran."

They should have just told the "driver" to mind his own business. I never chat with taxi drivers. Most of them aren't interested in chatting, but when I get the occasional one who wants to gab and ask questions, I just tell him I want to ride in peace and quiet. I close the bullet-proof partition if there is one.

  82. NYPD undercover activity in PCVST might indicate a local crime pattern with suspect descriptions. That could explain why, if it actually occurred, initial police news releases will misplace a crime location or exclude descriptions and acts. The wannabe rapist this past week did get arrested within 24-48 hours

There are no secret NYPD assassins contracted out by CWC to hunt down a tenant Silkwood movie character reporting toxic chemical and asbestos violations to a lawyer somewhere. That's nonsense.

It's also doubtful city police collude with NYU or CWC to misreport overall PCVST crime stats in an effort to maximize student dorm occupancy.

Still, there's probably more physical crime taking place now inside PCVST than anytime before, including the 70's-80's when a few nearby areas were actually dangerous. Back then PCVST was a safe oasis. Not anymore since Speyer.

  83. 12:12 you know a lot about the laws but keep in mind most tenants do not have as much knowledge as you do making them easier to fall for landlord lies.
