Our landlord, BLACKSTONE, can't handle Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. There is a lack of enforcement of certain "rules," and no amount of notice to this alleviates the problems. We are continually being told half-truths and fabrications. And we have no viable Tenants organization, despite our TA asking for dues all the time. So far, the politicians have proven to be basically useless. A typical New York story.

Stuy Town Chipotle Wants Liquor License
A Stuy Town Report reader informed us of the forthcoming request by Chipotle for a liquor license. Chipotle is going to be our neighbor soon. The rapid availability of alcohol to the student population here may be of concern to us, so I'm posting this info below. And thanks to the person who alerted me to this.
BTW, unless I'm reading the law wrong, the legal drinking age in New York starts at 21. And yet I see many students in Hane and Vamos who appear underage drinking alcohol. And now Petite Abeille is promoting a "college night," offering $3 beers and $5 beers with a shot of whiskey! $10 for a pitcher! (Let's not also forget that Oval Cafe was hoping to obtain a liquor license, too, before resident outrage shut that idea down, at least temporarily.) Is anyone carding the students taking advantage of the easy flow of alcohol in these establishments? (And carding with the knowledge and skill of spotting fake IDs.) Have the police checked? I don't want to spoil anyone's fun, but if student drinking IS a problem in this community, then these issues have to be addressed.
Meanwhile, here is the Chipotle info:
Chipotle is asking for a liquor license for its new location in Stuy Town. The Communty Board 6 meeting is this Thursday. Oct 29th at 7PM in Bellevue. Lots of college kids will be piling into Chipotle all night, much like the location on 23rd St which is a zoo at night. This will create noise and bring more litter, mice, rats and drunks into StuyTown since Chipotle serves both Margaritas and beer. If you want to oppose the liquor license contact the Community Board today or show up at the meeting this Thursday:
Business Affairs & Street Activities Committee
When: Thursday, October 29, 2015 - 7:00 pm
Where: Bellevue Hospital Center, 462 1st Ave, NY, NY, 10016
Old Medical Library - 8th Fl.
AGENDA
9i. New OP Liq. Lic, Chipotle Mexican Grill of Colorado, LLC dba Chipotle Mexican Grill,
286 1st Ave @E. 17th St. Reso.
If you can't attend the meeting, here is the CB6 contact information. Even a few people opposing a liquor license on valid grounds is enough for the board to oppose it. The final decision then goes to the State Liquor Authority, but they use the recommendations of the Community Board to guide their decisions.

Paaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
ReplyDeleteBetter that they drink in Chipotle then their apartments
ReplyDeleteThey will keep us busy with these little issues when the bigger issues are the cause of our problems. Not wasting a minute of time on this battle. CB6 do as you wish, you do so anyway.
ReplyDeleteMost restaurants have a liquor license. They need it to survive.
ReplyDeleteIt is unfair to refuse Chipotle in Stuyvesant Town a liquor license when they have to compete with Vamos Taco and Tequila in Peter Cooper Village
We need to address the core issue, which is the converting of the property into a student dorm. If the didn't live on this property I wouldn't care if they all drank themselves to death. We just don't need them here.
ReplyDeleteAlmost all Chipotle locations serve beer and margaritas. I don't think this is a reason for anyone to get their panties in a twist.
ReplyDeleteChipotle is one of the biggest fast food companies on earth, with over a $20 billion valuation. I'm sure they can easily compete with Vamos without the liquor license. Check out the 23rd St location, with the overflowing garbage cans and crowds of kids at night. These places are very high volume, and the amount of traffic and garbage they generate is astoundng. Look at the McDonald's on 14th St, theres always some drama going on over there. I just sent the Community Board an e-mail, hope others who care about quality of life do too.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if most people cought this one but Town & Village just had an article about noise complaints from the new pizza place Visana, where Adriatic used to be on 1st Ave between 18-19th St.. They have a liquor license and operate a "lounge" at night, and the residents are already comlaining about the late night noise, Once a place gets a liquor license you're basically out of luck. From Town & Village:
ReplyDeleteVisana, the new pizza place and cocktail bar/lounge that moved into 321 First Avenue after Adriatic closed, recently opened, and has already incited the ire of some residents who live in buildings adjacent to the new business. Timoney said that he noticed some of the 311 complaints in the last month have been related to noise from the restaurant, which operates as a cocktail lounge in the back at night.
“It’s a sleepy, quiet block and suddenly we have a club,” a neighbor at 317 First Avenue piped in at the meeting.
Although residents referred to the spot as a club, Visana does not have a cabaret license, which would officially permit dancing at the venue.
Timoney said that he and Detective Ray Dorrian have spoken with owner David Jaffee, who seemed willing to cooperate.
“I told him to be a good neighbor because now he’s on my radar,” Timoney said.
The commanding officer noted that he and Dorrian checked up on the business in the early morning hours on a recent weekend to make sure the noise level wasn’t too high and Timoney said that the business was in compliance, but he said that since the complaints about the volume of the music has continued, the precinct will continue to work with the owner to prevent disturbing neighbors, including hanging signs reminding patrons to be mindful of their conversation volume when outside the lounge.

Are there any Chipotles that currently sell alcohol? I thought that's like McDonalds asking for one? This does not make any sense as to how they could apply for one. I might be wrong.
ReplyDeleteI guess we really need alcohol to have a good time.
ReplyDeleteIt is a little different than McDonalds because they specifically target young children with their ads, beginning at age two kids of enabling parents can recognize the clown, they used to be able to recognize the golden arches too. That kind of stops McD's from getting a liquor license.
ReplyDeleteChipotle advertises to adults, so yeah, they can get a liquor license.
Maybe Chipotle will pay for installing "puking stations" where the chess table used to be.
ReplyDeleteIf they get a liquor license.
ReplyDeleteWhen 1 franchise starts it,the rest will usually follow. Its all about the "benjamins." I read that Starbucks is trying to do the same. And that started out as a coffee shop. Don't be surprised.
>>Maybe Chipotle will pay for installing "puking stations" where the chess table used to be.<<
ReplyDeleteDon't give management any ideas!!! LOL.
Petite Abeille and VAmos are prime examples. This is NYU and we all know it. Time to go folks. stop.beating.dead horse.
ReplyDeleteIt was nice while it lasted. They ruined this place.
ReplyDeleteThe big picture is how CW Capital and now Blackstone ignore quality of life issues when it comes to our retail. They are pushing out the Associated supermarket but bringing in a Chipotle, and allowing Vamos and Petit Abielle to become major bro bars. They are turning this into Murray Hill and catering to students now. But on Saturday they sit there lie and and promise to address the student dorm issues. None of these people can be believed and fewer trusted.
ReplyDeleteThey can't get rid of associated, that's ridiculous. There is no place to shop for food then. I mean, none for a 1/2 mil.e
ReplyDeleteafter Associated goes, bodega on 14th and B gonna do big business!
ReplyDeleteManagement is not responsible for you getting your food. They can do whatever they want with this space. And, it will be gone! They will do whatever they want with it.
