The Worst I've Seen

Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, together with the surrounding areas, are the worst I've ever seen. And I have been here for over three decades. The Covid disaster has just exacerbated the situation. A mess everywhere one looks. Inside the complex and outside. Would you want to live here? Yes, there are reasons to do so, but convincing is starting to look purposeless.

Also, at wintertime, there is infrequent heat for many tenants. Unless you use space heaters and/or turn on the stove (against your lease), you may be freezing. Management does not care. If Blackstone gets penalized, the payment is very small. So Blackstone continues on....

Photos: Inside this complex:

Outside:

Much more to tell and experience. (My camera was "attacked" by one of the vendors, but I held on and took more photos.) The various quality-of-life rules are not enforced as they should be, and can be ignored. Outside dogs casually being brought in, electric scooters and delivery bikes, unpicked dog refuse, it's all here. Welcome and have a nice day.

The TA has positioned themselves as the “voice” of the tenants, although they only speak for the 50 or so members that pay them. They went on a years long crusade to try and find a partner to buy this place, to no avail (kind of like every single one of their MCI challenges). If the TA can’t purchase Stuy Town, then Blackstone is the next best thing is what Garodnick and Steinberg told us. They claim to be one of the largest most powerful TA’s in the city and country, but we all know that’s a complete lie.

So the bottom line is this - is the TA going to influence who buys this place and what they do with their investment? Of course not. But if this TA had any true care for the tenants of this place, they would be fighting Rick and his crew every damn day regarding all the shit going down here. The amount of city/state violations that are seen on a daily basis continue to go on because the TA and politicians don’t fight them.

The TA needs to stop being buddies with the people at Beam and start making their jobs more difficult. That is all we are looking for at this point, not a TA president who finds every photo-op to cozy up with management. Start fighting or get lost.

Phipps was Mitchell-Lama, with a generous allotment of Section 8 tenants. But it was taken out of M-L, eventually purchased by Blackstone, and “repositioned”, to use the REBNY parlance. Sound kinda familiar?

46 degrees and a brisk wind blowing. No heat. Despicable bastards. How can they expect people to want to live in apartments where the landlord provides the bare minimum heat required by law? In fact, it doesn't even reach the bare minimum at times. 68 degrees may stave off hypothermia, but it is NOT comfortable for most normal people. At times my apartment goes below 68, especially at night. Can't wait to get out of here and find a decent place to live as soon as my lease is up. There are quite a few places to choose from now and many are better and at lower rent than these so-called "luxury" apartments. Luxury my ass! These cruise ship idiots don't know what luxury is! God! I'd had to stay at a resort or go on a cruise that is run by the likes of Hateful Hayduk! Probably old people get conned into spending their hard-earned money at such places and then live to regret it.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if Blackstone's resorts look anything like those photographs taken on the property? No wonder they get poor reviews. That guy couldn't run a fairground concession stand without destroying it.

How many vacant units do people think there are here?

This dump's "fame" is spreading. My doctor said his daughter and son-in-law were thinking of renting here for a couple of years. Now they're not! When I told him about the lack of heat, the noise and general poor management of the place he was shocked.

Anonymous said...

This must be the 30th time you’ve mentioned that you spoke with your doctor about this place. Please come up with some new material if you’re going to post, because the same old story is getting old.

I’ve lived here for 50+ years, and since this place ended true rent stabilization in 2000, I’ve not had a single person ask me about renting here and what I thought of the place. You seem to have people asking you almost weekly.

People will not take the discussions on this blog seriously if the same stories are regurgitated every few days.

"How could the TA have allowed or not allowed Blackstone into our lives? The property isn't and never has been the property of the TA. I doubt they had any say in the matter whatsoever. They're just a bunch of volunteers who try to get the Landlord to do the right thing. I don't think they have pull or power. They advocate for us, but they can't make the LL do anything or not do anything. They certainly don't get to choose who owns the property. Those are BIG REBNY projects."

I don't know how long you've lived in the stytown projects, but if it's been a while you've obviously had the foresight to not be attuned to what was going on during the time of Blackstone's acquisition of the property. Blackstone themselves said they would not purchase the property unless they had the full support of the stytown tenants association. I know this because I was dumb enough to go to ALL of the meetings the TA held during that time. I vividly remember Steinberg defending the TA'S position at Baruch College. I say defending, because tenants at the sty were already planning their kitchen renovations in preparation for the impending condo conversion.

The TA would verify all of this I'm sure, they can't deny history. This is why I say to people who are pissed off at the open sewer this place has become to always, always, always direct your ire at the TA. They are the malignancy here. Not a predatory corporation being predatory.

I didn't know any of the above. I never took any notice of the TA because I thought it was a "nothing" organization that never got anything done. Didn't realize that they did get things done and that they are responsible for us being bought by this notorious slumlord. What shitty bastards they must be. What the hell do they get out of it? There is a panel which has been ripped off the side of one of the elevator interiors in Tenants Associatioon President Susan Stewinberg's building. It has been weeks and has not been repaired.
The elevator looks like one you find in a NYC Housing Authority project, Disgraceful. Fix it already.
Use some of your "clout", Susan Steinberg, and see if you get something done.

Once upon a time, the TA had a cooperative relationship with PCVST management. Met Life built this place as a public service (yes, they made a modest profit, but could have reaped much more with other investments), and strived to provide good service and QOL to it’s tenants. (Also bolstering their corporate image as a “benevolent landlord”, a true rarity in the NYC real estate business).

But then Met became a publicly traded company, the old guard was thrown off the Board, replaced with Benmoshe and a crew of MBAs and bean counters. At that point, PCVST just became a cash register, gotta maximize the bottom line for the shareholders, and the TA a vestigial organ.

"The elevator looks like one you find in a NYC Housing Authority project, Disgraceful. Fix it already."

This property has gone down to the level of a NYC Housing Authority project. Only the rents have not gone down in accordance. Blackstone is notorious for destroying the quality of life in every property it acquires. Didn't I read somewhere that the idea for Blackstone to buy this property was floated by some corrupt, disbarred lawyer who is on the TA Board when he was talking to his neighbor, Jonathan Gray, when he was out at his second home in the Hamptons? The TA and Blackstone are in bed together, but we are the ones getting screwed!

Paraphrasing Steinberg's response to questions from tenants, her contention (and by extension the contention of the TA) was that if Blackstone didn't assume control then another RE entity would and we wouldn't have the "wonderful" deal hashed out between comrade de blasio's office and Blackstone. Lets not get into that ($3000 for an "affordable" apt). Obviously, the TA failed miserably and the correct action would have been for tenants to hold their ground and refuse Blackstone. Garodnick was also a malevolent force here no doubt with his coffee klatschs, feeding Veneiro's pastries to comrade de blasio at his (Garodnick's) apartment. Yeah, it really happened (unless Garodnick was lying).

It was an ugly time.

Anonymous said...

If we had been bought by a different RE entity it could not have been any worse and more avaricious and vile than Blackstone.

"Garodnick was also a malevolent force here no doubt with his coffee klatschs, feeding Veneiro's pastries to comrade de blasio at his (Garodnick's) apartment. Yeah, it really happened (unless Garodnick was lying)."

I recall seeing a photo in T&V of Garodnick, De Blasio and John Marsh having a pow-wow in somebody's apartment. Can't recall if it was in Garodnick's or Marsh's apartment. I don't recall if they were discussing the possible condo conversion or who they were going to sell us down the river to. Not all of us were on board with the idea of a condo conversion because it would not have been affordable to many of us and we still would have been renters at the mercy of some landlord.

Anonymous said...

"Not all of us were on board with the idea of a condo conversion because it would not have been affordable to many of us and we still would have been renters at the mercy of some landlord."

Understood, but it was our best hope. As you can see, we ARE at the mercy of "some Landlord". Ostensibly, had the tenants assumed control it would have yielded humane treatment for ALL parties involved (renters and owners).

None of this matters at this point obviously, it's over. We're just talking. I just feel the level of betrayal that the TA and Little Dan perpetrated on us cannot be overstated.

Was just looking at those photographs. This place really is a shit-hole now. Building two power plants on the property is certainly not going to make it any better! Who the hell would want to rent an apartment within the vicinity of a power plant? It's bad enough we have Con Ed just down the street, but to have power plants actually on the property .... SMFH. Blackstone has done NOTHING to make this a desirable place to live; they have made it less desirable and driven people out. The crappy shit they offer such as Oval Cafe, Oval Concierge and other "amenities" are inferior and over-priced. I kind of wonder if they are planning to raze the place eventually.

It's hard to believe a tenants association would welcome such a notoriously despicable slumlord. Blackstone is known all over the world as a predatory landlord that brings nothing good to any property it acquires. It's like putting the fox in charge of the chicken house. Garodnik turned out to be a real predator himself. He must have been getting some major kickbacks from Paul Weiss and Blackstone. I am very disappointed in him.

Anonymous said...

"Rob Speyer would beg to differ. At least Blackstone isn’t aggressively trying to evict RS tenants. Anyone get a Golub notice recently?"

I have to agree with that statement. Rob Speyer is Satan Incarnate as far as I'm concerned. He directly caused the death of some people who succumbed to the stress he put on them by falsely accusing them of living here illegally. There's a special place in Hell for that piece of filth.

Blackstone is a typical slumlord. The TA is a typical bunch of grifters.

Just pay your rent, buy good quality space heaters and don't have anything whatsoever to do with the so-called TA. Thieves, grifters, con artists, call them what you will because it is all the same accurate description of these grifters.

Don't bother contacting Hayduk because he sold his soul a long time ago. Hopefully, he will be gone soon, but he will be replaced by another lying POS of the exact same ilk.

Anonymous said...

Would it kill these cheap bastards to send up some heat? My thermometer registers just a tad over 68 degrees, but I am cold. 68 is the slumlord subsistence level that the City mandates. The bedroom is only 64 degrees. I think their fucking sensor system works, but it works strictly to the advantage of the LL. It is designed to not send up any more heat than is strictly required by law. The living room is always a tad warmer than the bedroom and I know that many of my neighbors sleep in the LR during the winter months because the bedrooms are like Siberia.

I hate this place. It's an overpriced slum.

Anonymous said...

So hard to united neighbors with mis-delivered mail since that idiot took down the directories and then fucked them up when he put them back. A lot of mail comes in without apartment numbers on the envelope. This place has become such a total fuck-up under the "management" of Hopeless Hayduk.

Honestly, it seems like people who write on this blog as just as bad as the TA. The TA does nothing and neither does anyone on this blog.

Everyone complains about the same things. Why not actually do something about it. Organize and go to the media, etc.

Also, this is a rental building. Why does everyone stay here if they hate it so much? You call it worse than NYCHA; if that’s the case, move into a NYCHA building.

Not trying to be mean but trying to be practical. If you hate something so much, do something about it or move.

Anonymous said...

NO HEAT again.

>>Honestly, it seems like people who write on this blog as just as bad as the TA. The TA does nothing and neither does anyone on this blog.<<

This issue has been addressed several times. Residents are free to bitch if they want to and it does have an affect. Not move mountains, but it is good to know and is seen by Management and others. And, pardon, but you don't know what residents have done, are doing or will be doing.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if Management withholds heat because they assume that everybody has space heaters? Well, not everybody does have space heaters because some of us are worried about small children and animals getting burned. I think we are living through an era of Stuytown that would inspire a novel by Charles Dickens! Makes me think of Oliver Twist's workhouse!

Anonymous said...

This blog is not something that was set up for people to organize and fight the issues, as would be expected of a group like the TA. It is for anonymous people to voice their concerns without fear of retribution in hope of something positive potentially coming of it.

This blog does not have a “formal” election process to elect people to a board of an organization that is supposed to fight for tenants, nor does this blog represent itself as an organization that would do something like organize people (again, a TA).

Anonymous said...

I've been told that the tenants who have these sensors in their apartments are told not to use space heaters because it could screw up the heat for everyone in their "tier." Are they also told to not cook anything in the oven? If you cook using the oven the apartment will warm up temporarily. Do we all have to suffer because somebody who has the sensors is roasting a meal or baking cakes in their oven and that warms up their apartment? I have neighbors who have the sensors and even though their apartments are uncomfortably cold, the heat doesn't come on. They have reported this to "management" but have been ignored. The only way the sensors work is to keep the heat OFF!

So sick of this lazy, unprofessional half-wit of a "manager." He should go back to the resort business where people only have to put up him for a few days or couple of weeks at the most. I know Hayduk isn't responsible for the installation of the useless sensors, but he is implementing a "minimal heat" policy for his satanic masters.

Anonymous said...

8:22 PM yesterday's poster refuses to acknowledge that "the media" is in Management's back pocket. Some residents (esp. real RS) can't afford to live anywhere else, esp. in NYC. And if anyone truly tries to "organize," those persons will be harassed mercilessly by Blackstone Legal Department. If anyone attempts to publicly picket or protest on private property, Rick will simply summon the NYPD to make arrests.

Anonymous said...

There’s a waiting list for NYCHA apartments.

And Stuy Town’s got vacancies up the wazoo.

What does that tell you?

Anonymous said...

Actually I am pretty aware of what residents have done and I know who looks at this blog. While I don’t know what the tenants are planning on doing, I know what Blackstone is!

Anonymous said...

Rick will simply summon the NYPD to make arrests.

No, it doesn’t work like that. NYPD is not at PCVST management’s beck and call.

I’ve said it before, but if we had a real TA, they’d be standing outside the Leasing Office handing out pamphlets to potential renters telling them all the things the sales agents conspicuously fail to mention - the lack of heat, brown water, thin walls and floors with no soundproofing, and constant construction. That would show some teeth, hit them in the pocketbook, and maybe then they’d address QOL issues seriously.

But no. Just Steinberg and Co., holding out their bowls, whining, “Please sir, can I have a little more?”

Anonymous said...

What is Blackstone planning on doing? What they can they do to make our lives even more miserable? They can't cut down on the heat because we have none. Maybe they'll build a nuclear power plan on the oval and we'll all get radiation poison. That should warm the cockles of Schwartzass's heart.

You are dead right on that. The TA does NOTHING for us. Absolutely bare minimum nothing. They claim their lawyers are fighting for us. I doubt it. What is the worse thing this vile ownership can do to any tenant who walks away from this putrid, filthy, unheated, dog shit-splattered hellhole? I'm talking walking away without paying another penny of the over-inflated rent they charge for living in hell. They can go after my credit rating. No problem because I am strictly cash-and-carry. There's no debtors prison and they will have to spend a fortune to track me down. Sick of paying hard-earned money to live in a shithole that is owned and run by people with no sense of decency and with no conscience. No heat, brown water, noisy jackass neighbors, no Public Safety to speak of and a manager who is an absolute jerk who doesn't give a fuck about the tenants. What does it take for the blood-sucking scum that runs this place to put the heat on? Are they deliberately trying to exterminate the elderly and frail? Are they hoping that the babies and children will all get sick and die? I don't understand their rationale for withholding heat. It is raw cold, windy and raining hard and there has been no heat all morning. My apartment is in he sixties and it is very, very uncomfortable. I don't want one of their bozos (they would call it an "engineer") coming into my apartment, spreading whatever he might have and I don't want to have to buy a space heater.

So many of the unfortunate renters here have to resort to space heaters and that is almost guaranteeing a deadly fire at some point. Even more use the oven for warmth. That is just as hazardous. I know this Hayduk idiot is just a puppet, but so were the goons at Nurenberg and their excuses didn't hold water there.

This place is a major tragedy waiting to happen because of the parsimony of this scumbag management. Now, imagine if we actually had a Tenants Association! A real Tenants Association that did'f offer a tour of the heating system as a response to the many, many cries for heat from the tenants! They should skulk away in shame, but they have no shame. They are just an extension of this cruel and criminally greedy "management."

What the hell is the upside of living here? No heat, paper thin walls and floors, thieves roaming the buildings and stealing package deliveries and no Public Safety/Security to speak of. We have an inept, incompetent loser of a "Manager" who doesn't a damn about what we have to endure and will come back with either snide or smarmy response if approached about an issue. He clearly is an Old Blackstonian all the way through to the bone.

It's not like we are getting good value for our money. The rents are high and the apartments are old, drafty and noisy in spite of "renovations." We have brown water, heating pipes that clang and rattle, but don't get hot! The heating system they have has to be the worst in the world and the windows are drafty and hard to open and close. So what is the upside to renting here? Deafening silence on that one. Been here for two years and wish I had never even heard of the place now. Worse place I've ever lived in. I understand it was nice at one time and was called an Oasis in the City. Now it is a Sewer in the City.

What kind of landlord gives the minimal (or below) level of heat and insists that tenants have a thermometer and makes them give a reading from the thermometer when they call begging for heat? Have never encountered this bizarre behavior in any other apartment I've rented. Then again, I've never had to beg for heat in any other apartment I've rented! Can't wait to get out of here at end of lease (March, unfortunately, so I have to endure rest of winter here) and spread the word about what a uniquely HORRIBLE place this is!

We have a raging pandemic, people in StyTwn are sick with the virus and trying to stay out of the overcrowded hospitals and are battling to get well by themselves. It is freezing cold and we need to keep warm to fight this virus. This son of a bitch Hayduk (who probably doesn't even live here anymore, but controls from afar) denies us the even the basic minimum of heat decreed by law. The TA does nothing and that is very indicative of whose side they're on. They should be forced to open their books and we'll see who they work for.

Just keep calling 311 and hope we can get an inspector who is not on Blackstone's payroll Where are our local political reps while this is going on? Accepting their graft, I'm sure.

This is my second winter here and it sure is going to be my last! Thank God my lease will be up in February. I have never, ever know or even heard of a landlord that makes tenants have a thermometer (provided by LL) in their apartments and asks them what the temperature is if they call and ask for heat. It's not because they want to make sure that we have enough; it's because they want to make sure we don't have too much! Too much (in their sick minds) would be a smidge over the legal minimum.

The mentality behind this thermometer ploy is a sick one. A very, very sick one. Only a sniveling, miserly, money-worshiping little blood sucker would come up with this idea. I guess that pretty much describes Schwarzmann and the no-self-respect losers who work for him and carry out his will. I am Jewish and I resent this little weasel so much because he lends false respectability to anti-semitism and we all have to suffer the stigma. I have heard so many remarks from people who consider Schwarzmann to be the worst type of stereotype and they really sting. Schwarzmann lives up to the negative stereotype so thoroughly that he is just about caricature.

Further proof that this this "sensor system" heat rip-off doesn't work: I ran into a neighbor who is a couple of floors up and on a different line and he said he was sweltering from the heat and had to open all the windows. I, on the other hand, live in a unit that seldom gets above 67 in the LR and 62 in the BR and the pipes are almost always cold. When the heat comes up, it lasts a few minutes and then goes off for several hours. Sometimes for 24 hours, no matter how cold it is.

Whomever at MetLife was responsible for the installation of the current heating system must have been paid under the table pretty handsomely. Probably was the same punter who was responsible for the useless windows that replaced windows that were no worse.

I think there should be a criminal investigation because the malfunctioning windows and the malfunctioning heating system were not cheap (we are paying in perpetuity for the windows) and are costing lives and ruining health in this entire project.

"It's not like we are getting good value for our money."

I would use that statement in regard to people such as myself: real R/S tenants. Certainly, unless one is living in a sty dorm flophouse, it's baffling why adults would pay market rate to live in this sewer.

Blackstone is doing what Blackstone does. Blackstone is reviled the world over for what it does to properties it buys and how it treats the tenants of those properties. It would probably take a worldwide boycott of Blackstone and the evil creature who owns it. But he will die eventually and there will be nothing he can do about that. Same goes for the people who enable him. They will not be remembered for any good they might do while they are on this earth. They will be remembered for being the tools of a satanic monster.

We have had no heat all day. Am going to call 311. Can't believe this bunch of grifters is denying us heat and is building two power plants on the property. They have the fucking balls to ask us to recommend a friend to live here. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless I totally hated them. I actually don't hate anybody (except the jerks who run this place) enough to recommend they live here even if they were offering a $10,000 bounty.

Have to get out of this place. I'll break my lease and they can chase me for whatever they think I owe them. I'd rather take the consequences even if it means fucking up my credit rating. They won't get one brown penny out of me once I'm out of here. Just the last month's rent. Nothing more. I've heard that decent landlords are sympathetic to people who leave Blackstone properties. Their reputation is well known in the RE industry and they are not admired and respected.

The temperature outside has been in the 30s all day. The temp inside in the 60s. Called and asked for heat. Nothing. We got a brief blast of heat late this afternoon and it went off around 6 PM.

This place is outrageous and the management (if you can call it that) is either totally inept or criminal. Maybe both.

Here’s a story all might be interested in . There are two bullies on the non TA STPCV Facebook group . I finally had enough with the one who is the worst and I actually pointed out her misstatements of fact and absurd memes . I responded with facts that proved that was she was saying was incorrect . So what happened ? She or the other bully ( who moderate ( censor) the group ) both obvious progressives did what any “ good” progressive does . They barred me from the group . This used to be a very nice place to live . Blackstone has helped to screw it up but so have the bullies and their buddies in the do nothing TA leadership

Stuy Town Reporter said...

I may have brought this up, but I became a member of a new Stuy Town group concerned with Covid. I was very nice. Anyway, I posted a link to a statement. Very soon, I found that I was banned for a month. I thought the banning was widespread in the group, but no. I was the only one. So this group banned me for just providing a link which offered another view. One of the members is the moderator of the Stuy Town resident group, not the TA. He loves to complain about people and issues that go against him. Though I have no proof that he went behind the scenes to ban me from the Covid group, the fact that he does such actions is, to me, damning. Once banned from the group for a month, I removed myself from it. I don't need these kind of games.

Suppression of views that do not agree with the moderators is rampant on Facebook, and one of the reasons I had to delete my account. If people can not have an open discussion and dialogue on differing views, then our country is headed down a path that many oppressed countries living under dictators face every day.

Progressives have absolutely adopted that approach, and if they don’t agree with you they will do everything they can to silence you. In this case ban you from a Facebook group. I’d be curious how many people have been banned from Facebook groups for no reason other than a differing of opinion.

Anonymous said...

Didn't know there was a Covid group in Stuyvesant Town. Is it for people who have had the virus or tested positive? I have never seen a link to it anywhere.

STR - Fascism and Communism, are in my opinion , just flip sides of the same coin . Both exhibit extreme intolerance ( or worse) to any alternative opinion and both are guilty of things that they accuse others of being . Current prime example is Eric Swalwell who should be , but won’t be , thrown out of Congress and investigated for aiding and abetting foreign espionage

Who the heck are you referring to? I haven't noticed any fascism on the non-TA or TA facebooks. I know the woman moderator/Admin on the non-TA page is a bossy yenta, but I try not to get into any altercations with her. The male Admin (if he's the one I'm think about) tends to respond with copies of the written law! My favorite is Adam Rose. He is straight to the point and is never nasty.

Somebody wrote something about a rent strike. Does that mean many people? Or just one or two, or a small group?

Could that mean only one person?

Evictions have been stopped now.

Even when they start up again, it takes months or more to evict someone. I think if you pay what you owe, then you can't be evicted anyway.

Why pay rent to people who are freezing us, holding many Corona Virus events every week, and bringing asshole drunken students in here? I hear them at night shrieking and laughing. Where are they going? Aren't the bars closed?

WHY IS BLACKSTONE PUTTING THEM HERE WHEN THEY ARE THE FIRST GROUP OF BASTA**S TO PARTY AND GIVE THE DISEASE TO THEIR FAMILIES AND EVERYONE AROUND THEM?

Blackstone is rich. They don't need the money. Why are they trying to kill us?

Why are we paying them rent?

Both groups do not tolerate anybody who criticizes the TA. The moderators of the other group are TA supporters and perhaps members. The TA group puts down dissent of management too, but they only ban you if you say that they are a do nothing arm of management which they are. They banned me over a year ago . The insisted I talk with them on line and when I refused they banned me. Fine. They were spiteful and condescending. Have not paid dues in five years and never will again.

"Kindly explain to me why I am paying close to 4K per month rent and there is no heat?"

Because you were "had." Sorry to break it to you, but the leasing agents are slimy crooks who are fluent in bullshit and lies. Anybody thinking of leasing here should look at the Yelp reviews and/or talk to someone who has lived here for a while. If you rented during the summer I'm afraid the gloss soon wears off as the weather gets colder. Wasn't always like this, but our landlord and its agents are the vermin of the RE community. The employ shifty, shitty BS artists to gaslight you. Have you ever read Hayduk's spiel? He thinks he is doing us a BIG FAVOR if we get heat at or slightly above the City's mandated minimum. For $4k per month you could most DEFINITELY do better. I mean a LOT better.

"Today is the second morning in a row we get up to no hot water, and 3 days ago, an unannounced hot water shutdown from evening till morning. No explanations before or after. Emails from resident services regarding all kinds of useless (for me and mine) events -- no problem!!"

This is because we have a half-assed "Manager" who is from the hospitality industry, not the residential industry. The cheesy events are more important to him than providing basic, legally-mandated services. The cheesy events are not really for the benefit of tenants, they are marketing props. Nothing that does not generate cash is of any interest to this management. We get no heat because it is more cost-effective to management to let us freeze. There is a reason why Blackstone is known as the most avaricious and tenant-unfriendly landlord on the face of the earth. Do you think that decent people would want to work for them? Answer that question and you'll know why you are not getting the basic services you are entitled to.

No, you are not the only one. It happens to all of us who call to plead for heat. I would like to tell them to shove their fucking thermometers where the sun don't shine, but I don't see any point in being crassly rude to some poor girl/guy who is just earning a (probably small) paycheck working for these bloodsucking bastards. If I got Rick the Dick on the phone, that is exactly what I would tell him.

This has to be the worst and most despicable management in the entire City. Well, maybe there are some who are just as bad in then slums of Brooklyn and the Bronx, but they're all cut from the same cloth.

Anonymous said...

Re: "getting away" with no heat. THIS IS HOW THEY "GET AWAY" WITH IT:

Simple: people put up with this crap, and lots more. And have been for years.

Yes, Blackstone is predatory, lethal, vicious, huge, known all over the globe for its utterly rotten and murderous (by way of putting people into the streets, creating living conditions for humans of physical danger in myriad ways, and CREATING and SUSTAINING stress levels in people that will ultimately lead to illness and death if not addressed for some of us) actions.

Yes, not only is Schwarzman a psychopath (sociopath, if you prefer that terminology), but expert at corrupting other humans in government such that they allow him to harm and kill the Amazon's lives (trees, other plants, animals), and do grievous and sometimes lethal harm to millions of humans all over this globe.

All of that, of which I've been writing for years now.

None of that contradicts the fact that human animals have allowed it. Period.

If people simply said what 2 year olds say, "NO!" and stopped cooperating by paying rent - in our hundreds, thousands, maybe millions, that deranged and thoroughly immoral man might have the ability to have governments or private militias murder us. I don't know. It's possible.

I do know, for a certainty, that going along with being tormented is THE ONE WAY TO CONTINUE TO CONSENT TO THE MURDEROUS ACTIONS OF BLACKSTONE - SCHWARZMAN AND HIS MINIONS.

People have correctly posted about the Covid-19 virus presence here, and its likely presence given the insistence on bringing in "students" and other transients. THAT is lethal, deliberately lethal, behavior on the part of Blackstone.

As an aunt of mine used to advise, "Just wait," because a new and very fast-moving strain of this virus is now cutting a swath through the United Kingdom.

So, continue saying "yes" to your tormentors. Sounds intelligent to me.

Thank you for posting it, 11:59 PM on December 14 of this blighted year.

Mama Earth, and most members of other species of all life on our planet, would fare much better without "us" here. By "us," I mean the human species of animal.

This walking poison and force for misery and intense pain (aka Stephen Schwarzman) is a splendid representative of the worst of us -- and too many of us are the most catastrophic species to inhabit this planet. We've a sordid history of wantonly killing and maiming life ever since we learned how to produce more food than we need for a day or a season. (10,000 years ago? Longer?)

Why doesn't us, or many of us (humans) simply marginalize, make completely powerless his kind? Why don't we make certain the class of human whom Schwarzman typifies cannot continue to ruin and scar our lives, our homes, our bodies, our sanity?

Why are we so scared, intimidated, indifferent, lazy?

Why do we allow those of our own species to brutalize us (humans) and the rest of us on this planet (the earth itself, birds, rivers - all who live on this beautiful globe)?

"Might makes right?" I dunno know.

I've my own both complicated and simple beliefs about life, creation, our place in it. I believe in patience and kindness and truly, I believe that murderers such as Schwarzman do not know what they do. If they felt their connection with, and dependence upon, all other lives, they wouldn't hurt so many of us living beings.

Still . . . there are moments when I don't understand why we simply accept being hurt and watching him and others hurt lives.

And, because, I, for one, do not do well as a silent, anonymous victim . . . and because I believe, KNOW that we all truly need each other to be strong and brave, especially if we are frightened - I put my name to this today.

Anonymous said...

Sari, I believe and agree with everything you say. I don't know what we can do about the Schwarzman creatures who live on this planet and have so much power because of their addiction to money and indifference to all forms of life other than their own. I take comfort in the knowledge that he is old and won't be around for that much longer, but there are so many others like him. Clearly he is a sociopath, incapable of empathy or conscience, but he has so many enablers. Hopefully, this cartoonish little creature will fade into oblivion soon, but it won't be soon enough. He really should be put away as he is a danger to mankind and isn't any better than a serial killer.

I have always thought that a rent strike would be totally ineffective here. Too many apartments, too many transients, no chance of getting more than a tiny amount of rent with holders. Would not hurt this landlord, just hurt the people who participate.A rent strike is only effective in a situation where there is one building of closely knit , long time tenants. Not a good idea.

Why do you say that? I don't think they are on board with this outrageous project. I don't think they knew it was coming. I do blame them for colluding to get us bought by this, the most evil landlord on earth; but I blame our sleazy politicians too.

I'm not sure they knew they were delivering us into the hands of SATAN, but they should have known. Blackstone is not known for doing anything good for anybody or doing anything that benefits the planet. It is headed by an evil little POS who has a special place in Hell awaiting him. So glad to be moving out of this disgusting, freezing cold slum. We are going to make a point of broadcasting far and wide what a terrible place this is and what a rotten POS of a "Manager" is in charge. That Hayduk character is despicable. He has no conscience and no compassion. We bought a space heater to keep warm, but that is not a good idea for people who have small children and/or pets. And regardless of that, the landlord is obligated to provide heat! Without the space heater our LR was in the low sixties. We never slept in the bedroom, but made do with a pull out sofa-bed. The bedroom is so cold that we use it as an extra fridge! Seriously! We don't keep meat or fish in there, but we do keep eggs, fruit and vegetables in there and they stay fresh! Calling Resident Service is a waste of time. They want to know the temperature and when we tell them they will send up heat for about half an hour and then it goes off for several hours.

I have never lived in such a cold, nasty miserable place and neither has my fiance except when he was in the Army! I'm glad they don't charge for electric because if they did we would not pay it and they could take us to court and do whatever the fuck they wanted to do. This has to be the worst landlord in New York. Maybe slum landlords are as bad, but the tenants there don't pay close to $4,000 per month to suffer such desolate conditions. What a SHITHOLE!

I'm afraid I don't understand your logic, STR. How can this place be better for someone who has more money? Why sell out big bucks to live in a slum? I think the folk in the unrenovated apartments are getting the best deal. I do not in any way whatsoever begrudge them their lower rents, especially as many of them are elderly and really are at serious risk from the lack of heat, but I don't get how those of us paying high rents are at an advantage other than that we can thumb our noses at this POS "management" and move out the day the lease expires (or sooner) and find something much, much better for the money.

You can't make these bastards give you heat, though. Or give a shit if you have a noisy, stinky dorm unit disrupting your peace and keeping you awake all night. If you have the money to live in this dump at "market rate," you can afford to live somewhere better with the nice schools, nearby playgrounds, etc. and HEAT and PEACEFUL enjoyment of your home.

It is 26 degrees outside and the thermometer in my BR reads at 59 degrees. The radiators and pipes are ice cold and have been that way for several hours.
When somebody dies as a result of the callousness and incompetence of this so-called "Manager" he is going to be very, very sorry. It's only a matter of time before somebody dies because of hypothermia, exacerbation of an illness or from being burned to death by a fire caused by a space heater or carbon monoxide poisoning from having the oven on and the oven for warmth. When (not if) a tragedy occurs as a direct result of the parsimony and criminal disregard for human life that is exhibited by the landlord and its paid so-called "manager" there will be criminal charges and I don't think Hayduk will be able to worm his way out of it.

We really need to get the media involved in this travesty and, hopefully, get something done to prevent a tragedy. We should not have to live like this. Nobody should. I feel for the people sleeping on the street, but we are not on the street. We are paying rent to live in a place that is as cold, nasty and dangerous as a homeless shelter. In fact, the shelters probably get more heat than we do.

The playgrounds and PS40 are absolutely huge selling points for many of the families that remain or have recently moved here. Just like when people buy an old money pit home in the suburbs for the sole reason of the school district where that house is located.

A lot of those smiling kids are transient residents. I believe that Beam has a deal with companies and businesses for short term rentals of a year or six months. I have few families in my building but they are generally unfamiliar and many appear to be foreign. These families are in and out.

By not giving sufficient heat, Blackstone & TA happily cooperate by "protecting us from fossil fuels"!

I thought I would die of cold last night. We had absolutely no heat whatsoever and it was as cold as Hayduk's heart. I can't stand this place any longer. I wouldn't have been any colder if I had been sleeping outside. I think it's obvious that the City inspectors are "taken care of" because so many people complain to the City and nothing gets done. The temperature frequently is below the legal minimum. Christ! I detest this place and the asshole who runs it!

Hi STR and Readers,

I find all of these conversations fruitful.

I am a little confused. Is Stuytown run by Beam Living? If so, is Rick just a figurehead of the old guard? What about Kelly Vohs? Doesn’t seem like anyone complains to him or talks about him.

Anyone know?

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Hi. Beam Living is branded as the real estate name of Blackstone. So Rick works for Beam Living (Blackstone). Kelly is one of the higher-ups in Stuy Town, possibly second in charge after Rick. He was a Green Beret, but seems too young to be a military lifer. He lives in Stuy Town, but has three dogs, which is not allowed by the rules here. Kelly keeps a low profile. If Rick goes away, chances are that Kelly will take his place.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like Rick and Kelly both have excellent credentials to run this place. Not.

Anonymous said...

Richard Hayduk is the "CEO" or "General Manager" of Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village.

Kelly Vohs is the "CEO" of Beam Living.

Beam Living is the "management" arm of Blackstone here in New York City, where Blackstone "owns" several apartment complexes.

Kelly seems to manufacture, mix, and drink his own Kool Aid. He is superb at adopting and maintaining the attitude and physical position which is drilled into military people: when someone is questioning or berating him, or pleading with him about unlivable conditions here, he stands erect, sometimes with his hands clasped behind his back, stares into your eyes, is "polite" the way military and police and similar people are when dealing with the mere public.

He is superb at negating you in this time-honored manner, which has much in common with "corporate" and "business" behavior and manner.

Kelly is a shining example of likely 100% unconscious and removed from what he is actually doing in his life. Go to his Facebook page to read who and what he thinks he is, or purports to be. If he weren't daily injuring so many people, it would be laughable and pathetic.

Each of the "management" people with whom I've dealt, including the "legal" department here, has her or his own unique way of devaluing, negating, discounting and dismissing you when they deal with you.

Once in a great, great while, if you interact with them often enough, they may show a fleeting chink in the armor. I would rather think that it is a crack in the wall they've erected, a crack through which light, Light, can get through to heal them. I'm probably wrong, but I'd like to think that there are decent human beings in there who are still breathing beneath the layers of denial and mental garbage they've troweled on for years.

Anonymous said...

Kelly is the “CEO” of Beam, which oversees Stuy, Kips Bay, and Parker Towers, whereas Rick is the “CEO” of Stuy Town only. So in the grand scheme of things, Kelly oversees Rick as well as whoever is in charge of those properties. Kelly probably goes to the Blackstone meetings and gives the marching orders from those meetings to Rick.

Anonymous said...

And he follows many of our national politicians who subscribe to the “what is alright for me is not alright for thee” mantra with his blatant disregard for the property dog rules. It’s no wonder people don’t follow the sham house rules, our management CEO even follow his own rules.

This was a really good answer. Thank you very much. I cared more about what people thought and the insight. Him having three dogs, whatever. But if his character is similar to other leaders at Blackstone and he’s above Rick...

Anonymous said...

So why don’t we focus more on Kelly for changes and not Rick if Rick doesn’t make the decisions?

Anonymous said...

I don't give a shit about his Green Beret. I just want him to run this property in a way that makes living here a pleasant experience. He could start by dealing with the noise and [lack of] heat situations.

Disclaimer: my father's two brothers served during World War II in Europe. My father, a paratrooper in the South Pacific, nearly died of shrapnel, malaria, and elephantiasis. He was flown out of New Guinea during World War II to a San Francisco hospital where he could not speak for six months due to shock. The men in his unit were sure he died.

After he came home to New York, he continued to have intermittent bouts of malaria.

Medically speaking, given the last two years of his life, I am not sure that some disease from the South Pacific did not lay dormant in his body until it had a hand in killing him when he was in his mid-70's.

SUMMARY: I deeply respect military men. Period.

That said, Vohs is "Green Beret," meaning he was trained to kill people because the military, all military, trains people to kill other people for a higher good (protection of nation, innocent children, women, a "way of life" such as democracy, etc.)

Vohs may not have killed people for the United States of America as a "Green Beret." It occurred to me when I met him and then learned about him that he was perfect for his new posting here. Trained to . . . .

There are probably hundreds of ways to kill people. Many of them are excruciatingly slow. The infliction of stress upon the body over years of time will contribute to, if not actually cause, diseases which may ravage a person's body for many, many years. Not only is the end result death, but there may be great suffering for a very long time before death releases them.

The imposition of near constant noise (often preventing necessary rest and sleep), along with frequent smoke (marijuana and/or nicotine), and denial of sufficient heat to ward off disease are just a few of the many methods used by Blackstone and its servants. Vohs who writes about "kindness" and "leaving people happier than you found them" just plain lies. Ugly, ugly, ugly lies.

He is hurting hundreds? thousands? of people daily. Gotta be thousands, since he "oversees" so many huge -- or big -- apartment complexes in New York City.

He knows exactly what he is doing and how his actions affect people.

I spoke with a "manager" of the people building the two power plants (they label them "co-generation") who talked absolute sh*t to me the other day about its benefits, and its safety. This is yet another monstrous imposition (illegal, immoral, and worse) which will greatly harm people, and perhaps even contribute to their deaths. I had no doubts the young engineer-manager believed the insanity and lies he spouted.

I have no doubts Vohs knows the new, additional horror in which he is participating these Covid-19 days. His service's motto is "De Opresso Liber" - "To Free the Oppressed." "The Green Beret is a fighting force for those who cannot fight for themselves."

That's a pretty good one. His actions harm us greatly. And he is most likely very well paid to do so.

I have a different take on Green Berets. Yes, they are trained to kill, but also to do other things, too. Positive things. But Stuy Town uses the vets (Green Berets or not) to generate positive impressions of...Stuy Town. As a vet myself, I am aware of any kind of usage. On some things, I don't care, on other things I wince.

Anonymous said...

STR: It's my impression that all military branches are trained to, and drilled in, helping others. It is part of why they exist. Police, as well. "Protect and serve."

I don't doubt that, and I know you're a vet yourself.

Maybe I was not clear enough. Kelly Vohs was, among other things, trained to kill people in the military. I highly doubt, although do not know, if he actually killed people in that capacity.

I do know that as "CEO" of "Beam Living (more like BeamDying, as has been pointed out by others), he is engaging in systemic and systematic daily actions which CAN kill people - excruciatingly slowly through erosion of the immune system, nervous system, organs which depend upon the immune system . . . even attacking a person's will to live in certain circumstances. Suicides here, dorm conditions which include drug production resulting in death, would-be rapists lured here by the deliberate populating of a residential community with nubile young females. The list goes on. And it is not only here. There has been trouble in Harlem (before Vohs time here, though) and in Queens.

And LIES and worse. Others have written that it is much preferable to deal with anyone (including, and particularly) a landlord who is honestly and openly hostile and inimical to you than one who INSISTS AS A TACTIC that they are "doing good."

Those who hurt, harm, maim, injure others with smiling faces and assurances of their good will and love (at least one "management" person has either told me how much they "like" me and even "love" me) are especially vile creatures.

P.S.: For a long time, I defended many of the "management" and "legal" people as people doing what they needed to do to make a living in order to eat, have shelter, feed their families, etc.

That ended for me during the Covid crisis, which continues. They are directly responsible, in my not particularly humble opinion, with spreading this killer disease. They are insisting upon it as I write by reason of their rental policies and actions, their "activities" and "events" and such. Once you can see on any TV or Internet connection, or listen to on any radio, what the spreading Coronavirus is doing to millions of people worldwide, you are a seriously sick and dangerous person if you "go along to get along" with your employer's lethal actions.

People such as porters, and in "lower" level positions are not culpable to my way of thinking. But "management?" "Legal?"

What is that Shakespeare line about "How do I love you? Let me count the ways?" Substitute, "kill" for love. Because this disease kills, and kills in a cruel manner, and Blackstone, from the top, is either inviting, or allowing it to kill people here.

PCVST used to be a "to die for" place to get into. Now it is a "to live for" place to get out of. Power plants on the property, covid-spreader "events" and no heat in the majority of apartments. Add to that a charlatan of a "manager" who doesn't have a clue about how to run a housing complex and a worse-than-useless TA which is in bed with management and every one of our filthy so-called "elected representative." What a fucking Whore House it all adds up to.

All military branches are trained to kill. The Green Berets have more brains and, sorry, do help people if that is part of their mission. And I may be in the Stuy audience for the film, which is long, but entertaining. (And, yes, I know the facts about the film.)

Just run the place as a livable residential apartment complex. I'm not impressed by your green beret any more than I am impressed by your pink panties.

The news today includes the shutdown of much of the United Kingdom due to a Covid-19 strain which spreads a great deal faster than the strain that has been killing many of us since early in the year. The federal government has thus far refused to ban travel from the UK into America despite the reality of Wave 2 of Covid-19 here causing intense misery.

Life is becoming, in some ways, even more scary and uncertain. And probably dangerous. "Out there," and "in here" - Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village. And the surrounding neighborhood. And New York City.

I don't get out of the house as much as I used to - like many of us. I'm busy and not bored, though.

Talking to more people, especially neighbors who are still strangers, might be a good thing. For them. For me.

I taught for a while, did some informal counseling. Along with the anger and other negative emotions I have expressed here on the blog at times, I feel trust and joy, too.

I'm here to talk - on the phone - and Zoom, if someone else runs it, and I am "faceless!" and only "the voice" since I've yet to get back to the hairdresser.

Talking helps. The talker, and the talkee. Especially as this pandemic continues to test and challenge and wear us out and down.

Please call to talk about the pandemic, life here, your own life, our lives during this time in human history.

Tonight, less than an hour ago, I received a "Good Neighbors" message from Hayduk informing me that "one or more" residents in my building, 2 Stuyvesant Oval, have tested positive for Covid.

No information concerning ONGOING, CONTINUAL actions to insure the wellbeing of residents in this building other than vague statements of "deep cleaning," assurances that they are following "guidance from the public health authority" (WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN - PRECISELY, IN DETAIL, EXACTLY?), and more canned NOTHING about looking elsewhere for information on how to protect ourselves from becoming ill with Covid, and/or transmitting it to others.

Beginning in late August, 2 empty apartments on my floor had young people moving in. They were in my corridor - next door to me, and facing me on the opposite end of the corridor. These two apartments had been vacated months before by other GROUPS of young people during the height of the virus here. When those groups of students, or very young people, moved out, I had been greatly relieved. It meant much less likelihood of MANY PEOPLE COMING AND GOING A FEW FEET FROM MY HOME AFTER BIOPSY, SURGERY, RADIATION.

The students and younger people are simply TOO GODDAMN MANY IN ONE APARTMENT. THEY ARE LIKELY TO BRING IN LOADS OF OTHER PEOPLE. THEY ARE APT TO "SOCIALIZE" A GOOD DEAL AND THUS BRING BACK COVID FROM A GREAT VARIETY OF LOCATIONS. THEY THEMSELVES ARE LIKELY TO GO OUT DRINKING, DRUGGING, AND NOT ONLY MAKE UNHOLY RACKETS, BUT ENGAGE IN ALL SORTS OF RISKY BEHAVIOR.

AND BRING BACK COVID.

I was pretty damned petrified during the move-ins of multiple students and/or young ones beginning at summer's end. I let it be known to at least 3 "higher ups" in "management" and "legal" that I was more than frightened of the coronavirus and needed to NOT have these people moving in here. In addition, hundreds of apartments were empty. So why TWO new GROUPS of potential death carriers in my one narrow, short corridor leading to my home???

I was told the usual, and some new, lies and bullshit.

My response was one of outrage, rage, and fury . . . in addition to my terror. Why?

Because moving in groups of people, especially of the age who are most likely to endanger the lives of everyone around them, is criminal, period. It can be literally death-dealing.

Because, as I have expressed to several people, Blackstone is not only violating all sorts of laws and rules in the first place (by opening up dorm-like and hotel-like situations), THERE IS NO NEED FOR THEM TO INVITE LIKELY COVID-CARRIERS BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL DEMANDS.

Blackstone does not need one single penny. They are the largest private residential concern (ha! what a word!) on this planet. THIS LANDLORD CAN EASILY MANAGE TO HAVE AN ENORMOUS VACANCY RATE WITH NONE OF THEIR EMPLOYEES, STAFFS, MANAGERS, ET AL. SUFFERING ONE WHIT.

Hell, last night I was disturbed by noise to find that well after 9 p.m., another group of potential killers-by-Covid-transmission was moving into the attached building (4 Oval). And every weekend night, at the least, there is the same yelling, shrieking, insane laughing and giggling, and hanging out, and movement of GROUPS OF YOUNG JACKASSES HERE. Same as pre-coronavirus.

The waiting Ubers, the partying assholes.

WHY?

Europe is in the grip of another, and more virulent wave of Coronavirus, a new strain. Countries are closing their borders to the English because of the spread there. We're in for continuing, and worsening nightmare.

So, Blackstone does this to me? To you?

I've been binge-watching the different versions of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" because I love every version of the movie! Whichever one I watch, I keep seeing the face of Stephen Schwarzman on the character of Scrooge. He would be absolutely PERFECT to play that role - and he wouldn't even have to act! The only thing is that I doubt he would be capable of the conversion and redemption that comes to Scrooge. He would still be totally turned on by inflicting misery and suffering for the sake of money. Pity about that, but he would make a PERFECT Scrooge with that pinched, mean, cold face and that whole hunched over demeanor of his, kinda like he's holding on to his wallet of money belt for dear life!

Maybe three spirits will visit him sometime. Ya never know.
