Calling for a Moratorium on Dogs in Stuyvesant Town

It's become evident that landlord Tishman Speyer's dog policy for Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village is not working the way it was intended. While most dog owners appear to follow the rules, there is a percentage who do not. Even with signs around the Oval that dogs are not permitted on the grass and in the flower beds, these self-involved dog owners flagrantly ignore the rules. I've actually seen a dog owner, a young woman, stand in front of such a sign at the gate of one playground and allow her dog to go in the plantings right in front of the sign and take a dump! Furthermore, the presence of unpicked dog crap and sticky smearing from sloppily picked up dog waste is increasing. The other day two turds were left on the gravel path that surrounds the Oval, just waiting for someone at night, when visibility is low, to get stepped on and trailed along the path.

For decades the previous owner of this complex, Met Life, maintained a no-dog policy. Aware of the problems that dogs could introduce into Stuy Town and Peter Cooper, Met Life determined that it was a quality of life issue that dogs not be allowed. Tishman Speyer, in search of tenants it could lure, changed the policy. And now we have the result.

Well, no one is going to take dogs away from their owners, but seeing as Tishman Speyer cannot enforce the dog rules it has, surely it is time to call a halt to introducing more dogs into the complex. The problems are not going to get better, otherwise, but much, much worse.

Below are a few recent photos that show what's going on in Stuy Town.

Hmm, the signs says no dogs on the grass, so the owner stays outside of the grass but let's his pooch on it!:

Fido taking a dump on the lawn. Yeah, from the condition of the lawn there, you won't be able to tell anything occurred, but still:

Can you smell what a dog owner is cooking for you? It's right there, waiting for you on the gravel path along the Oval lawn:

Non-resident taking a nice weekend stroll around Stuy Town with his pit bull or pit bull mix. I was actually heading his way and he exited at the Ave A entrance and headed home to the Lower East Side. Was he stopped by Security at any point in his leisurely walk? What Security?:

Ah, it was a beautiful Saturday in Stuyvesant Town! Just the perfect day to spend with your dog on the Oval lawn and ignore all the no dogs on the grass signs posted around the Oval and on the lawn itself:

  1. We live on the Main Floor in PCV and my wife tells me that several dog owners use the lawn behind our building as a dog run , while smoking their cigarettes, many weekday mornings. They used to use the lawn in front of the building until TS put up a "no dogs" sign

  2. There are several makeshift "dog runs" in this complex, all away from the main centers of pedestrian travel and the eyes of whatever Security may be around.

  3. Tishman never had any intention to, nor will they ever, enforce any dog regulations.

They've ignored the 2 dog - 75 lb weight restriction, there are many tenants with huge dog(s). I see a woman walking her 2 sheepdogs every day. I doubt most of the dogs are even registered with the landlord because I don't see the required red tags on many of them.

Here's an example of a pet policy that actually addresses the quality of life issues that dogs create.

Tishman is interested in only 1 thing, the maximum cash return from the property every day. They don't give a shit how they get it, and they're certainly not going to tell a cash paying renter what to do (about anything), period.

  4. Everyday I see more and more dogs and everyday
I see their owners disregarding the rules. I even
saw a woman let he dog off the leash and let it run loose in playground 10. While walking on 1st avenue a young man pulling his dog along did not even stop as his dog was going on the side walk.
I stopped short of stepping in it I told him he should curb his dog and he looked at me like I had ten heads. I to wander how many people registered their dogs. Nothing will be done until
    someone gets bitten.

  5. I agree with you 100% STR. This place has become a freakin' dog toilet. The other day I spent maybe 20 minutes at the oval and saw at least 5 people walking their dog across the oval and letting them crap on it. Not a security guard in sight. I wonder if when they finally go bankrupt and another owner comes in if they will be able to reverse this policy. Forget the moratorium, we need to get the existing dogs out as well.

  6. There's no way to get rid of the existing dogs. For one, it would probably be illegal, as dog owners were allowed dogs after the policy change, and it would definitely be cruel to owners and dogs alike. The only thing that can be done with the current dog situation is enforcement of the rules.

  7. It's not going to happen. TS does not care about how the grounds look as evidenced by how the grounds currently look! Their sole concern is not having to turn away any potential tenant for the reason of them having a K-9. All this stuff has been rehashed so much. Ultimately it's all just very sad when I think of how beautiful a place stuy town was at one time.

  8. I registered my dog when I signed my lease, but was never given nor sent a red tag by the management, nor has anybody ever asked to see one. We use the generously scaled dog run in Tomkins Square Park, and, even as a dog owner, I would not want a dog run in StuyTown: they are noisy and smelly and potentially dangerous for the dogs (both in terms of fights and disease), and even for people, especially when people bring their kids into one. Your Parkmerced link is broken, but copying and pasting it reveals what seems a completely reasonable set of pet ownership guidelines. Personally, I would have no problem signing a document like this. Not all dog owners flaunt the rules while chain-smoking cigarettes, and I'm sure all would rather live by the rules than risk losing their pets. You're right: enforcement of the rules is the only solution to this problem. Maybe there is a productive, non-hostile way to get dog owners to obey the rules? Some gentle reminders, a nicely written mock "summons" to hand out to people you see breaking the existing rules? I will mention to the dog owners I see on my daily walks that some among us are upsetting other tenants, and to please pass the word to be more respectful and vigilant about the regulations, especially picking up after their pets.

  9. Saw a couple playing fetch with their dog in playground 3 yesterday. Saw the dog stop and pee on the turf.

I yelled at the owner, told them that

    a) Dogs aren't allowed in playgrounds. Ever.
    b) The law requires dogs to be leashed.
    c) Kids will be playing where your mutt just peed

And he just looked at me like I was nuts. "Relax, Pal... It's not a problem"

I think I'll start "accidentally" start leaving some puddles of anti-freeze here and about.

  10. What a horrible thought. It's the dog owners that are the problem, not the dogs. Maybe you're kidding but it's a scary thought. Please don't do that.

  11. But why not? Spreading poison seems to be the point of this blog and the mob who supports it.

  12. It's people like you, Nick Dick Jock.

  13. I sincerely hope the poster who threatened to spread puddles of anti-freeze isn't serious and just has a sick sense of humor. Anybody who would do a thing like that should be locked up. Not funny at all.

  14. "Spreading poison seems to be the point of this blog and the mob who supports it."

Oh, please. You are the one who is spreading poison at this point, Supporter.

Regarding the response of the person who had his dog in Playground 3--"Relax, Pal... It's not a problem"--well that's the typical response, verbal or non-verbal, if they are confronted. Self-absorbed, they just don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. They get it. They just don't care. And if you say something they'll probably think you're 85 and that you live in a subsidized apartment when you should live on Staten Island or die.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Puh-leeze yourself. Self-absorbed? That's rich, coming from you.

What exactly, then, is the point of this blog? There's no "truth" or reportage here, just the angry rants of a Lonely Ranger looking for evidence, no matter how scant, that this once crumbling paradise is now a "hell on earth." Where is the good in this? How will spewing all this bigoted bile and flaming people who disagree with you make this a better place to live? And if it makes you a happier person, maybe this is something you should take up with your therapist or your club of enablers who applaud your intolerance. And with the possible exception of the anon antifreeze poisoner, nobody ever suggested that anybody should "move to Staten Island" or die. I took my "BS" blog down because every minute I spent on that, basically trying to rebut your ravings and those at LuxLiving, was one less minute spent with my family or on my work, and seemed pointless: I don't believe you have one iota of interest in building anything better, only in tearing things (and other people) down. Why don't you rechannel all this emotional energy into something more positive?

Is it possible that if Anon had not yelled at the asshole who let his dog pee in the playground, but rather said something in a civilized manner, that there could have been a better outcome?

Isn't one of your biggest laments the loss of community spirit and neighborliness? Why not be an example of it rather than just hurling angry hate bombs from behind your anonymous computer screen? Be the change you'd like to see, cause right now you're not painting a very flattering portrait of the people who live here. And out of fear that I might fall into the same trap, I stopped my site. Hoping you find something to celebrate today, peace, neighbor.

    ReplyDelete
  17. LOL. Supporter, step back a little and see how much hate and anger YOU are spewing forth. You also should be aware of a certain lack of comprehension on your part. Two times (at least) I've already explained the "hell on earth" phrase to you and that I will be altering the blog description in the near future and removing that phrase. Yet you still bring this phrase up, taking it out of context.

It's understandable that you can't see the purpose of this blog, nor connect with the feelings of many who comment here. You have almost just arrived to Stuy Town and have no idea, and very little factual info as proven by your own ex-blog, of what this place was, for whom it was built--or any of the major issues that many others are concerned with.

    Peace to you, too, brother.

  18. "I think I'll start "accidentally" start leaving some puddles of anti-freeze here and about."

That's sick. It's not the animal's fault. I'm sure the people you work with at the Princeton Architectural Press would love to read your suggestions on killing animals. Maybe you bitches could publish a book on it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Someone should compile a list of all the site he's spewing and email it to all the contacts on his company's website. I am sure they would LOVE to know the shit he's writing on the clock.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Funny you mention that, the published conveniently removed his name and email address from their website yesterday. Wonder if he lives in Stuy Town???

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was not the one who said I would leave puddles of antifreeze around. You're getting your anonymouses mixed up. Too, I don't understand all the references to Princeton Architectural Press, I think you're barking up the wrong IP tree.
    And who is Nick?!
I'll check back with you in 10 years when I have more StuyTown experience under my belt and my opinions carry more credibility. Until then, keep up the good work.
---Your "creepy moron asshole pussy" neighbor. Adios.

  22. Last word: I don't understand this obsession with outing people. If you recall, I offered to meet with you weeks ago when I thought maybe there was some common ground to discuss improving some things around here, but you "LOL"'d in my face, told me you're the Lone Ranger, and accused me of being some TS functionary. I think LuxLiving was (rightly) upset when some jerk at NY Living Solutions (duh! Nick, now I get it!), basically offered a bounty on identifying her, which is creepy in the extreme. Since both STR and LL operate anonymously, why the interest in trying to track other people down? For tar and feathering?! But this is my last post, ever, on your site or hers, so hopefully the intrigue in knowing who I "really" am will fade.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "Since both STR and LL operate anonymously, why the interest in trying to track other people down?"

There were only 2 people outed. Nick Hetherington from NYLS and Richard Wernick from LeFrak. Both claimed to be Stuyvesant Town supporters but rather than voice their positive points of views on ST and life there, Nick encouraged people to "hunt" LL and Wernick went on LL and bashed tenants in several comments, for example:

"You people are all pathetic. Met Life and/or Tishman Speyer are not your benefactors. Most of you just whine and whine that your undeserved charity is being taken from you. You complain that this country is like Iran but then contradict yourselves by saying Companies should not be allowed to make money off of their investments and should provide people with cheap housing. Seriously, you are all pathetic whiners who are living off of my tax dollars.

...you have parks and playgrounds. How many of you are illegally living in your dead grandmothers apartments??? And students live near you? Oh poor you.

And now they are giving away a car. While most people would think that was a cool thing, no, you now need to complain about the fact that you need to pay taxes on it???? Good. Your tax dollars can go to help pay your neighbors government-subsidized rent. And you even have to pay tax on the free parking as a gift, man that sucks. You already don't pay utilities. Should Tishman Speyer pay for your damn groceries and health insurance too? Or maybe you should have government regulated caps on your drinks and dinner when you go out at night so that we have a dining control board."

    Nice!

And whoever YOU are, who claims to love ST so much, all you did with your blog when it was up for 5 seconds, was trash the residents who write on this site and LL.

For a few people who want to present the "real" ST, feel free to do so instead of continually trashing the residents who have seen the place deteriorate under Tishman Speyer's management.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Okay, let's take a few breaths and calm down here. First off, I shouldn't be mixed up with Lux Living. I am NOT tracking anyone down or outing anyone. I repeat: I am NOT tracking anyone down or outing anyone. (Photos of folks breaking ST rules is another thing.)

Second, let's not get our "Anonymouses" mixed up, too. ST Supporter did NOT make the comment about anti-freeze.

Third, whoever did make that anti-freeze comment was surely not serious. I can't believe that.

So please, one and all, let's lower the temperature, even if the temperature outside is hot.
