Stuyvesant Town Residents On Edge After Violent Muggings

NY1 REPORT:

Residents were on edge in Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan on Sunday, following violent attacks on two elderly men there earlier this month.

Police released surveillance video of one of the incidents that happened Wednesday.

The suspect is seen attacking a 71-year old man in the building's lobby.

The older man's money was stolen and he suffered a broken arm.

Police say they believe the same suspect also grabbed a 77-year old man in a building entrance on November 3, attacked him and robbed him.

Some residents told NY1 the neighborhood needs better security, while others said it was a matter of vigilance.

"They have money to spend on ice skating rinks and things people don't need, but apparently they don't spend it on security," said a Stuyvesant Town resident.

"We need foot guards, the patrolmen around again," said another resident.

"The basic thing is you have to be careful and you have to watch what's happening around you," said a third.

"This is one of the safest places you could live in New York City," said a fourth resident. "I feel comfortable, in spite of the report of the robberies. I would think to be more aware of what is happening around you."

According to crime statistics, robberies have increased 5.6 percent in the neighborhood in the last year.

The suspect is described as in his 40s, about 5-feet-8-inches tall and 180 pounds.

Anyone with information on the attacks should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.

  1. A lot of crime goes on in Stuyvesant Town that never gets reported in the news. I know that for a fact, though can't say how I know it without getting some members of Public Safety into trouble. They are sworn to silence by the Stasi.

  2. NY1 is the best news channel there is for keeping up with what's going in the City. Unfortunately, it's only carried on Time Warner. RCN and FIOS don't have it and they are missing some good reporting and programming.

  3. A cuple of weeks ago, T&V reported that the Security force now numbers 70. Through most of the day on Saturday there were upwards of six or so security officers at the rink. That is more than 8% of the entire force and, when you don't count the fat (literally and figuratively)in the administration, probably a much higher percentage of the actual patrol force.

Meanwhile, the elderly are mugged in their homes. Its time to clean out and shape up this group.

  4. Has anyone noticed that the mugger only strikes during skating hours?

That's when "security" is busy guarding the ice...

  5. I can't understand why the media was so confused about the location of these two horrific attacks. Surely the 13 precinct had the addresses of the attacks? I wonder why they made a mistake and said it was Gramercy?
Y'know, I think I've figured out what that very strong and putrid stench is that seems to linger over New York City, and it is especially strong around City Hall and a certain property management office. It's the smell of corruption. Too bad that stench has also permeated the 13th precinct. That really is disappointing. By the way, I hope Daniel Garodnick isn't counting on my vote. He will be disappointed.

Remember, even if it's 70, they have shifts, so there's fewer than that at every time period.

  7. Any money that CW planned on making directly or indirectly from the Ice Skating Rink, will be negated by the money they will loose from the "Stuytown Mugging" headlines. Perspective tenants are looking for Safety, and cleanliness first. Not ice skating rinks! You would of thought that CW would of learned a lesson from
the previous owners who burnt through thier working capital.

Precisely the point STR. For that particular day, it was very likely a much higher percentage of the on duty force.

  9. They caught the guy! No thanks to Security. No thanks to the TA either. When NY1 reached out to them, they said they thought it was Stuyvesant Town and not Gramercy, but couldn't be sure. Most of us had absolutely no doubt whatsoever, especially as the address was on the video! We also know our lobbies pretty well! Anyway, I'm glad the cops weren't looking for this asshole in Gramercy. Still think it's funny that the 13th Pct got Gramercy mixed up with Stuyvesant Town. They must have a newbie on the desk. Maybe an out-of-towner. ;-)

  10. According to reports on NY1 and DNA Info, the mugger has been caught. His name is Henry Huggins and he's from (supposedly) Murray Hill.
