Our landlord, BLACKSTONE, can't handle Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. There is a lack of enforcement of certain "rules," and no amount of notice to this alleviates the problems. We are continually being told half-truths and fabrications. And we have no viable Tenants organization, despite our TA asking for dues all the time. So far, the politicians have proven to be basically useless. A typical New York story.

The NY Times on the Ice-Skating Rink
The story took a while to brew in the offices of the NY Times and seems, therefore, not that relevant regarding the deep concerns tenants had about the ice-skating rink, concerns which seem to have vanished (for the most part), as the rink is nearly noise free and very much enjoyed by kids and their parents.
Anyway, there is more to this piece than just a review of the rink:
Skating Rink Spurs Stuyvesant Town Residents' Latest Fight with Management
Funny how when you're knowledgeable about a situation you see how lousy the New York Times reporting is.
ReplyDeleteThe NYT is suitable for bird cage lining or wrapping fish.
ReplyDelete"All the news that fits, we print!
This was perhaps the best comment made by readers of the Times article:
ReplyDelete"Only in NYC would a taco truck be considered an amenity."
I think that says it all.
Yes, their reporting is lousy. The fact that the rink has turned out to be substantially less noisy than feared is mostly a result of the fact that tenants, the TA and elected officials were very vocal about the noise issue and encouraging tenants to make complaints to the city.
ReplyDeleteIt also doesn't note at all the concerns that Rose and CW have neglected building maintenance in favor of spending globs of money on distractions such as the rink and the other oval bread and circuses that are inflicted on tenants.
That's funny... I think the place is looking better than ever. Maybe you live in a different part of the "Town" than we do.
ReplyDeleteWe all need to post, on mass, to this NY Times article. I did 2 posts, let's see if they hit.
ReplyDeleteThe most despicable comment:
“The problem is not ice skating rinks or taco trucks -- it is widowed 75 year-olds living in three bedroom apartments and paying $1,000. It is people who inherited the apt from their parents and now have a household income of $200,000 and are paying $1,400 for a two-bedroom. I'm rent stabilized with a family of four, and we're crammed into a one-bedroom because these greedy old-timers are trying to turn it into a NORC, forcing management to be inflexible.”
Yes, why don’t those WW II war widows just do us all a favor and die. Fuck you, @dbillotti.
Amazing, isn't it, how some younger people will go after widows on fixed incomes!!! Kinda reminds me, in attitude, of what happened recently at ceremonies at Pearl Harbor:

dbillotti probably doesn't know there are a few real (not chopped up) 5-bedroom apartments here. He'd probably take out contracts on those widows.
ReplyDeleteThis reporter is a dope - the market was a TS creation; food trucks are Rose's idea.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, both are illegal.
