So here's some of what I saw in just one tour of the Oval walkway. What a disgrace.
Several dog crap smears, one near the garbage can and smaller ones beyond it.
Someone didn't pick up after their dog, no doubt a cute little pooch judging by the shit left behind. Right near the Greenmarket area, too. Enjoy your vegetables and artisanal cheese tomorrow!
More from the Greenmarket area. BTW, even though signs are posted at the Greenmarket stalls warning dog owners not to let their dogs near the food, dog owners still let their dogs sniff at the fruits, vegetables, artisanal cheeses, etc. Surely a health code violation, but who the hell cares.

Dogs love to piss against the stone block retaining walls around the Oval. Wherever you see a dark area on the wall, that's where the little (or big) pissers go to relieve themselves, causing a flow of urine to trail across the walkway.

Near the guardhouse. It has to be some kind of spill. Has to be. I've yet to see a dog large enough to produce something like that. But--wait--are elephants allowed in STPCV?
I think the next logical step is to allow us human beings the same rights as dogs have to piss and crap around the Oval. I know some human pissing and crapping is already happening in the stairwells of STPCV buildings, but still...sometimes it's too much to hold it in before one gets to a building.
This is disgusting but the dogs can't be blamed. This problem is the fault of Tishman Speyer, CWCapital and the dog owners. First Tishman Speyer for letting the genie out of the bottle and allowing dogs. CWCapital for not having clearly marked dog/no dog areas and, last, the dog owners who think whizz is the new rain. Add this to the beer and vomit stains everywhere and this is the reason I leave my shoes at the front door.

DeleteIt is legal for people to patronize any city greenmarket with a leashed dog. No health code violation STR. It is compassrocks responsibility to clean the walkways of vomit, litter, food spills, beverage spills, pet residue. Get on their case and ease up on the 99% of petowners who clean up properly.

I hope I can put up with it until I retire in a couple of years and get frig out of this cesspool. The low rent does help though. I've also stopped looking at this place as my home. It's just a place where I sleep now....not a home. It does make the shit and piss easier to tolerate. I walked out tonight and there was a stream of piss coming off the garbage can in front of my building. Thanks dog owners.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. Don't surrender! If there is a mess in front of your building, don't sit idly by or take it sitting down. Call Service Dept and let them know the conditions in front of your building. Document it and call again and again. It is the property manager's responsibility to maintain the walkways of whatever filth exists. They seem intent to keep it leaf-free so why not press them to keep it debris-free as well.

This place is hopeless as a dignified place for the middle class and will probably become more hopeless as the years go by. Eventually, and surely, all these buildings will be torn down for luxury high-rises. I still think, however, that we need to put up a fight, and a good one.
Not that what you posted is not right & down right rude, however instead of leaving it to fester because its not my job, why not have the workers who sweep up all the other garbage simply include these mishaps. Also perhaps the dogs at the cafe, are simply leaving their opinions.

Aside from the dogs barking all the time from 7 AM to 1 Am, the more pressing issue are the kids who come in at all hours of the morning, inevitably waking up people who have to get up and go to work.
My rent is $1000 and change so it's hard to give up the apartment but to stay here is madness. If its this bad now, can you imagine it in 5 years?

Feeney is Director of Maintenance Operations here. Maybe Mr. Feeney can stand up at the next staff meeting and say I'm turning over a new leaf. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. Mr Feeney -- you have an army of gasoline-guzzling leafblowers on staff! And you have at least 1 sidewalk sweeper (a friendly chap) dutifully cleaning the paths to the Leasing Office daily ... Just got home after a long day's work (some of us have work on Labor Day) and almost choked when I got off the elevator. The fucking skunk pot that my neighbors spew out of their apartment is overwhelming. Don't know if they are students or not. They are a young couple, but may or may not be students. Due to the number of posts related to dogs over the past few years it is clear to me that STR is not particulary fond of dogs and that is absolutely fine and good.
ReplyDeleteThe problem I have is that the issue is not the dogs, it is the type of renters that we have here in the complex. It is undisputed that college students now dominate the new tenants coming in and a good number of them have taken advantage of the pro dog policies of Mgmt. So it should be obvious that the transient early 20 something college student renter could not care less about leaving his/her dog's feces wherever the dog squats. It is an issue about the type of dog owner not the dog. The hallways, garbage rooms, laundry rooms are treated the same way as the outside grounds by these tenants. I would bet money that if dogs were allowed back when Met Life was in charge the problem would not be anywhere near as bad.
On a separate note, I have seen so many more people wandering the complex with suitcases than before. I have always seen these air bnb types but this past month it seems like the number of these people have quadroupled. This place is such a transient slum. I have lived here for only 2 years and my wife and I are desperately searching for a house out east to escape this dump.

Whatever the case, given that we know that dog shit & dog piss definitely killed all the grass around the periphery, CW has 3 options:
1. Keep this area un-fenced off so dogs can continue to go there (and hope that the area don't turn into crap before bidding starts).
2. Keep it completely fenced off and discourage dog owners from using any areas at all within STPCV.
3. Come up with some innovative solutions that shuts up both dog owners & non-dog owners (good luck with that.)
There are laws in NYC about where dogs are allowed to go. They supposed to be curbed. The sidewalks are a no-no. What about the loops and the service roads? What about Peter Cooper Road (much of which is used just like a sidewalk). So far as I'm concerned, the sidewalks and the grassy areas should all be off limits. Where does the conversation go from there?
BTW, odds are better than 99 to 1 that every real estate party hungrily eyeballing STPCV reads this blog and all the others at least every other day.

ReplyDeleteWork in the grassy area in front of the fountain continues. The dog owners approach with their dogs and see...awwww, the favorite peeing spots are interrupted. And so they go to smaller open areas on the other side of the fountain & let their dogs pee there. So...now smaller areas getting lots of pee. Soon these areas will also be completely dead. Why the dog owners themselves don't see all this as disgusting and a serious matter of public sanitation is somehow beyond me.
And I also need to point out that there should be a dog run if they allow dogs. They tell potential renters that there will be one put in.

ReplyDeleteNO THERE SHOULDN'T. If you ever looked at a map of our community and walked it, you would see that the open spaces are all under someone's window--and dog runs are noisy. The exception is the Oval. Care to make a case for putting a dog run there? All over Manhattan people have to walk to a dog run--sometimes a couple of blocks, sometimes farther. Spoiled self-entitled dog owners can avail themselves of the dog runs in Stuyvesant Square Park, Madison Square Park (not listed on the resident website), and Tompkins Square Park.
This morning I saw the sidewalk in front of the old Chase bank on 23rd Street being pressure washed. This was a welcome sight as there was a lot of dog feces residue there.
ReplyDeleteBack in April 2012 one of the landscapers told me that the re-landscaping was due to end in 1 1/2 yrs. That would bring us to around Oct 2013. Hurricane Sandy was a big setback, but Stuy Town looks pretty much done now and I see a lot of activity all over PCV. So possibly some time in Nov is the target date.

ReplyDeleteCouldn't disagree more. I've personally witnessed very senior residents of this complex not only let their dogs shit on plantings, but not pick it up.
If they try to install a dog run here, they will be looking at a whole lot of trouble. The tenants here will not stand for it. Who the hell wants to be forced to listen to a bunch of barking dogs for 5 minutes, let alone for hours. Besides, I don't think that NYC law permits it.

There are reportedly 1,000 dogs registered in ST PCV. The vast majority of dog owners follow the posted rules. The few knuckleheads who do not are not the norm but rather they are outliers. Dog owners have fewer access to STPCV amenities than all other residents. So enjoy the paths and seating areas that are not accessible to pet owners and call maintenance if you spot any stains so they can hose it down. Call Public Safety if you see violations of any kind underway. Dogs are loved by thousands of people in Stuytown and bring comfort and joy to the seniors and children here. Lighten up! Pet a dog -- and smile!

OK. So there is a dog problem here. The idea of a dog run is ludicrous. As has already been pointed out, no one will want the dog run in front of their place...with damn good reason. So...check this out:

"A person who owns, possesses or controls a dog, cat or other animal shall not permit the animal to commit a nuisance on a sidewalk of any public place, on a floor, wall, stairway or roof of any public or private premises used in common by the public, or on a fence, wall or stairway of a building abutting on a public place."
Dog owners are not allowed to let the dogs piss and crap on the sidewalks. Yet that's where all the dogs go. Right on the sidewalks. Doesn't matter that the dog owners clean up afterward. It's illegal to let them crap on the sidewalk in the first place.
What makes dog owners here feel they must not follow NYC laws? The fact that they are hidden from plain sight.
Dept of sanitation workers can issue tickets to dog owners. And the city is dying for any sources of revenue. So I will get in touch with the dept of sanitation & tell them that if they want to rake it in, just send someone in ST and PCV from 4pm-7pm and they will have a ball issuing tickets. I suggest that all of you also get in touch with the dept of sanitation. The more people they hear from, the surer they will feel that the money is here for the taking.

Maybe it's time for a return to the Pilgrims' practice of social shaming. See someone letting their dog crap on a public walkway & not pick it up? Shame them. No need to engage the offender, just make them too embarrassed to ever do it again. This works for all violations from littering to sidewalk bike riding. ReplyDeleteLately I've taken the time to observe the dog owners closely, and they are really in an entirely different world than the non-owners. They cheerfully amble along letting the male fidos pull them to mark every other tree and trash basket until fido finally takes a crap on the sidewalk. Then they scoop it & go home. The female fidos can stop at any moment and just pee in the middle of the sidewalk. Yes, the owners don't care about sanitation but they so much don't care, their minds are a million miles away from even being remotely aware someone might think all the peeing & defecation disgusting.

The law requires owners or retail tenants to keep the sidewalks clean, but with the number of dogs we have, we'd need a worker stationed every few feet.
What exactly do you expect Dan or the TA to do? It's Management's job to enforce the rules. And every one of us should speak up when we see someone abusing the property. If the person is from the outside, tell them they're not welcome here.
Today's example: I see a young guy let his dog pee on the walkway. I tell him that that's not acceptable and he has to curb his dog. He tells me it's a puppy, and he's training it (he gave it a treat after it peed!). I tell him he should carry the dog to the gutter.
FACT: you are NOT allowed to let your dog crap and piss on the sidewalks anywhere in NYC. So says the law.

ReplyDeleteMy old school, copper wire, Verizon land line is OK, 14th street address. Is this outage in a particular area of ST?
ReplyDeleteWith all the chemicals they are using to polish the brass on the elevators & lobby- we could soon look real good!!! Oh wait, I forgot- we never painted the hallways.The walls are a mess & filthy. But boy do we have nice , bright brass. Yes! LIKE PUTTING LIPSTICK ON A PIG !! Who is making these decisions????

ReplyDeleteSo am I and I heard the bastards don't plan to fix it until sometime next week, if at all. They want everybody on FIOS. I'll switch to Time Warner or RCN.
Way more bang for your buck with RCN than Time Warner. Seriously, RCN gets most improved award; TWC is only worthwhile for the 1 or 2 years of introductory pricing, afterwards it goes through the roof! Also, constantly rebooting to correct internet glitches. Nope, I'm much, much happier with RCN. Seems like they, at least, learn from their past mistakes.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Go with RCN. Have had virtually no problems with them for years. I dumped Verizon phone service a long time ago and never looked back. Saved money by bundling services with RCN, too. Not as cheap as it used to be, but still cheaper than paying Verizon.
