Our landlord, BLACKSTONE, can't handle Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. There is a lack of enforcement of certain "rules," and no amount of notice to this alleviates the problems. We are continually being told half-truths and fabrications. And we have no viable Tenants organization, despite our TA asking for dues all the time. So far, the politicians have proven to be basically useless. A typical New York story.
Alas, nothing is free in this world...especially in the eyes of Management. We will all be getting an MCI for the ducks beginning next month. When questioned about this, Property Manager Rick Hyduck said, "This is just another "amenity" graciously afforded by the owners. We're certain the pleasure derived by residents is certainly worth the cost".
And it’s pictures like this that enable them to sell the whole oasis in the city spiel. If anyone follows their Instagram page, you would know that they do this very well to sell this place and it almost always has photos that are not indicative of what life is really like here.

True. However, if I am going to live in another place, I would investigate as much as I can. The good and the bad. I would look at my financials. I would examine what I (and my family, if I am moving with them)) need. Unless I am desperate or just don't care for a year or two. I would do more than look at a landlord's photos.
It is pictures like this that actually emphasize what Blackstone and Ivanhoe Cambridge are destroying with every tree cut down because one day these pictures will no longer be possible. There are already fewer birds migrating through here and thousands fewer wildlife with nests in trees calling this place home. STR is documenting an extinction in process, a beauty forever lost.
Do note that in those two photos, there is no sight of a building. I was sitting at the Oval. I looked up and saw what is seen in that first photo. As for the second one, I came across this sight as I was leaving and just had to take a shot, as I've never seen ducks here.
On occasion I will take a "nature" photo here, but the problems still exist. I've documented these a lot. This morning I came across two large streaks, seemingly not picked up, of dog do-do. Yesterday, near Management's office, I saw another mattress that wasn't wrapped. So why is this happening over and over again, and it seems no one connected with Management (I include workers and porters) care. One could say, "We have a lot of territory." But with the very visible presence of PS on their scooters, someone is seeing much more than even I. So, I repeat, why is this happening?
On this near perfect day, I did a nice 2.5 hour walk around the property. I hit the entire property at least twice, with some areas 3-4 times. A few observations:
1) The property still looks pretty damn nice when everything is in bloom. Hopefully SPS is done with the tree removals, but I worry they’re not.
2) I did not see a single PS officer other than in the oval and in the PCV guard booth. NOT ONE! Meanwhile in all 3 trips through the oval, the same 4 guards were stationed in the exact same spot each time. You want to talk about optics, this is a major one. And I’d be curious STR... do you see guards anywhere but the oval? Seeing them elsewhere has not been my experience whatsoever.
At various times PS is at the Oval. But sometimes they are absent. I've seen PS officers walk around on 1st Ave, more than before. Some of these guys on their scooters, too. Now, as I said, they seem not to say anything about enforcing the laws. They seem to be there as a "presence" and to make nice to residents.
In my building elevator, they have had the padding in for over a month. It smells and is probably full of germs and what not. Either take it down or change it. What a sty this place is.
There will never be any news on that NYU sulfuric acid case. They tried to cover up that it was an NYU student and did in some publications. Management tries to hide the fact that they are turning this place over to NYU. A case like this makes them look bad and proves their rental policies. They will make sure that no info gets out.
Another StuyTown "amenity": Classless, smelly, moldy elevator padding which is now a permanent addition. Plus, there is a new perk: A puddle of urine and a pile of dog sh*t on the elevator floor. I guess Fido wasn't able to push the buttons to get downstairs in time so he had to do his business right then and there! What a pigsty this place is becoming! Oh, did I mention the mattress which has left OUTSIDE the carriage room door. Tres chic, eh?

What’s another $250 million to a billionaire? Probably not much, but it still wasn’t a bad five days at the office for Blackstone boss Stephen Schwarzman whose net worth jumped a quarter of a billion dollars last week thanks to his investment firm’s flurry of deals with Chinese buyers. to $10.2 billion last week.
A four percent rise in the price of Blackstone’s stock meant the company’s CEO and chairman’s personal fortune climbed to $10.2 billion by the time the bell sounded on Friday. And this jump in Blackstone’s share value came just after Blackstone sold a 25 percent stake in Hilton Worldwide Holdings to China’s HNA Group last week for $6.5 billion.
Blackstone had purchased the hotel chain in 2007 for $26 million before staging a successful $2.35 billion IPO of the company six years later. The transaction will see the New York-based firm’s stake in Hilton reduced to 21 percent.
For Blackstone, the sale of the stake in Hilton was the latest transaction involving a Chinese buyer. Together with its portfolio companies, the private-equity real-estate firm has sold an estimated $16 billion in hotels, office buildings and other overseas real estate assets to Chinese buyers, according to data compiled by Dealogic and The Wall Street Journal.

Ms. Underwood, who, as state solicitor general, temporarily took over Mr. Schneiderman’s job when he left office, should be allowed to remain in the position until voters choose a permanent replacement in November. Ms. Underwood, a former Yale Law School professor, has decades of experience, has argued 20 cases before the Supreme Court and clerked for Justice Thurgood Marshall. She is more qualified than anyone else whose name has been mentioned.
Instead of doing the responsible thing, though, politicians are poised to take advantage of an unexpected vacancy to advance their own political causes.

I'm surprised the older tenants (who are truly rent stabilized) aren't paranoid and terrified! Knowing your landlord wants you dead (or institutionalized) and will swarm your apartment before you are even in the ground, must be a very depressing reality to live with. It must be especially hard for those who are alone and not in good health. Funny thing is, they seem to be quite a cheerful bunch and some of them actually trust that Hayduk character. That generation (the "Boomers") are a pretty tough, resilient bunch and will fight for what is theirs and take no prisoners. Many of them have good lawyers! Many of them raised good lawyers* and those who didn't raise their own, know where to find them! I hope they all live to be 100 - at least 100.
*This was the generation that sacrificed and worked drudge jobs and overtime, and went without luxuries themselves in order to put their kids through college.
I agree that many of the older tenants like and trust Hayduk. They will not believe that he is working with management to destroy this community. Just because he answers their e-mails and chats with them, they think he is great. I love the way that on the TA site, Peter Stuyvesant always tells the bloggers to e-mail Hayduk. Shows that they are parasites of Blackstone.
I don’t know many older tenants who like Rick, they’ve been around long enough to see through the BS. For the most part it’s a certain demographic (30-50 yr old females) that seem to be the biggest Rick proponents.
I think too many older tenants are fearful of management to like or trust Rick.
The TA's job is to tell Rick themselves so tenants can remain anonymous, free from any fear of retaliation. The TA is not supposed to tell tenants to tell Rick anything. The TA is supposed to solve the problems of the tenants while keeping the tenants safe from landlord's bad acts. If the TA is telling even one tenant to tell Rick anything, then the TA is intentionally failing it's duties and obligations.
An Airbnb couple rolled up to my building with their wheelies and luggage. They couldn't get buzzed in so they started pounding on the door. A neighbor asked do you live here? They said no, we are staying with "friends". Neighbor said sorry, call security. "Guests" replied, "F*ck you." Class, huh? Susan? Rick? I can't hear you.
Useless as they are, I don't think the TA had anything substantial to do with the Blackstone deal. They wanted to buy the place and when Garodnick waved that little bait under their noses, they completely abandoned any interest in being a tenants association. John Marsh may be a crawler around politicians, but he has no power or authority and wouldn't have even been allowed to be a fly on the wall at an important meeting.
7:08, I completely agree. The statement from Peter Stuyvesant telling tenants to contact Rick about anything is not what they should be doing. They tell people to contact Rick knowing damn well they won’t, and therefore the issue goes unsolved.
A good TA should be helping tenants, not throwing them to the wolves to fend for themselves. Susan and the rest of the TA board can go to hell as far as I’m concerned.
I am ready to believe that the TA Facebook Page is being censored by "Peter Stuyvesant." I posted a very thorough question about management's air conditioner policy on Thursday afternoon, including pictures of a unit I recently had installed. You have no choice in terms of which unit to buy. Without going into too much detail, I now have a "thru-the-wall" unit in a "thru-the-wall" sleeve.... in my WINDOW PANE. Others have complained on the FB page of the noise level these units produce. My post has yet to be "approved," probably because it raises questions management doesn't want to (or can't) answer.
Imagine what might happen here if everyone of us who despises the AirbnB situation were to stop and confront every damn person wheeling a suitcase around here and/or trying to enter a building.
Imagine what might happen if there were 2 or more of us giving an extremely ugly time to all of these folks.
Please don't respond that some of these people are "innocent." I don't give a good goddamn anymore. I want them gone.
We can make them gone if we become consistently nasty, confrontational and aggressive.
I would love to confront these suitcase rollers, but it is management that is allowing them to stay here and might even be promoting it. It is not our place to confront them. They should be registering with the office so the Airbnb sponsors can be weeded our. But once again, if management is involved it won’t happen.
I hope the tenants who are renting out their apartments on Airbnb are aware of the consequences if the IRS catches up with them. And if they are in rent stabilized apartments (real RS) the penalties the RSB can come after them with. They should ask themselves if it is really worth the risk, especially as they are pissing off so many of their neighbors with their "enterprise." All it takes is a really pissed-off neighbor to "drop a dime" and most know how and where to go about it.
Comments have to await approval by the administrator of this blog to be published. Comments that insult another commentator, or that cross a line the administrator is not comfortable with, will not get approved.

ReplyDeleteTrue. However, if I am going to live in another place, I would investigate as much as I can. The good and the bad. I would look at my financials. I would examine what I (and my family, if I am moving with them)) need. Unless I am desperate or just don't care for a year or two. I would do more than look at a landlord's photos.
It is pictures like this that actually emphasize what Blackstone and Ivanhoe Cambridge are destroying with every tree cut down because one day these pictures will no longer be possible. There are already fewer birds migrating through here and thousands fewer wildlife with nests in trees calling this place home. STR is documenting an extinction in process, a beauty forever lost.
ReplyDeleteDo note that in those two photos, there is no sight of a building. I was sitting at the Oval. I looked up and saw what is seen in that first photo. As for the second one, I came across this sight as I was leaving and just had to take a shot, as I've never seen ducks here.
ReplyDeleteOn occasion I will take a "nature" photo here, but the problems still exist. I've documented these a lot. This morning I came across two large streaks, seemingly not picked up, of dog do-do. Yesterday, near Management's office, I saw another mattress that wasn't wrapped. So why is this happening over and over again, and it seems no one connected with Management (I include workers and porters) care. One could say, "We have a lot of territory." But with the very visible presence of PS on their scooters, someone is seeing much more than even I. So, I repeat, why is this happening?
On this near perfect day, I did a nice 2.5 hour walk around the property. I hit the entire property at least twice, with some areas 3-4 times. A few observations:

2) I did not see a single PS officer other than in the oval and in the PCV guard booth. NOT ONE! Meanwhile in all 3 trips through the oval, the same 4 guards were stationed in the exact same spot each time. You want to talk about optics, this is a major one. And I’d be curious STR... do you see guards anywhere but the oval? Seeing them elsewhere has not been my experience whatsoever.
At various times PS is at the Oval. But sometimes they are absent. I've seen PS officers walk around on 1st Ave, more than before. Some of these guys on their scooters, too. Now, as I said, they seem not to say anything about enforcing the laws. They seem to be there as a "presence" and to make nice to residents.

What’s another $250 million to a billionaire? Probably not much, but it still wasn’t a bad five days at the office for Blackstone boss Stephen Schwarzman whose net worth jumped a quarter of a billion dollars last week thanks to his investment firm’s flurry of deals with Chinese buyers. to $10.2 billion last week.
A four percent rise in the price of Blackstone’s stock meant the company’s CEO and chairman’s personal fortune climbed to $10.2 billion by the time the bell sounded on Friday. And this jump in Blackstone’s share value came just after Blackstone sold a 25 percent stake in Hilton Worldwide Holdings to China’s HNA Group last week for $6.5 billion.
Blackstone had purchased the hotel chain in 2007 for $26 million before staging a successful $2.35 billion IPO of the company six years later. The transaction will see the New York-based firm’s stake in Hilton reduced to 21 percent.
For Blackstone, the sale of the stake in Hilton was the latest transaction involving a Chinese buyer. Together with its portfolio companies, the private-equity real-estate firm has sold an estimated $16 billion in hotels, office buildings and other overseas real estate assets to Chinese buyers, according to data compiled by Dealogic and The Wall Street Journal.

The Dem political machine is trying hard to advance themselves and put someone in the AG office who completely and utterly failed tenants. She had the opportunity to help lower east side tenants when they hired her as their lawyer. Instead the public advocate resigned her clients, the tenants, when they refused to be bullied into leaving their homes so the landlord could "renovate" repair the building. The public advocate was supposed to be a fierce advocate for her clients, the tenants. Instead she used her office to get the tenants to compromise to a middle ground, helping the landlord.

New Yorkers reacted with revulsion when State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman resigned this week amid allegations he had beaten, choked and threatened to kill women he dated.
Albany lawmakers, true to form, saw political opportunity.
Assembly Democrats, who have the power to pick Mr. Schneiderman’s replacement, are moving behind closed doors to bump out the supremely qualified acting attorney general, Barbara Underwood, and install New York City’s public advocate, Letitia James. This back-room deal offers dividends to just about everybody except the public the legislators took an oath to serve.
Ms. Underwood, who, as state solicitor general, temporarily took over Mr. Schneiderman’s job when he left office, should be allowed to remain in the position until voters choose a permanent replacement in November. Ms. Underwood, a former Yale Law School professor, has decades of experience, has argued 20 cases before the Supreme Court and clerked for Justice Thurgood Marshall. She is more qualified than anyone else whose name has been mentioned.
Instead of doing the responsible thing, though, politicians are poised to take advantage of an unexpected vacancy to advance their own political causes.

William McClellan, the Chief, was harassed, minimized, cut out of the loop, and prevented from doing his job, the job he'd done for 12 years. That was in September.
Eddie Grace, Lieutenant, here for well over 30 years, was intimidated, harassed, overburdened, denied the help he needed when he became seriously ill (3 strokes), and fired for doing his job.
When the geniuses from Florida did their "assessment" of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, they recommended the elimination of our longstanding and previously effective Security Department. . . to be replaced by . . . you guessed it . . . outside contractors.
During Hurricane Sandy, however, there WERE outside contractors here to augment our Security. Some of those fine gentlemen stole from residents, and according to one source, also physically harmed some residents. So, it didn't seem practical to hire outsiders, after all.
But never fear: Blackstone and their minions are resourceful, so they are getting around that pesky fact by firing anyone who does the right thing and hiring newbies whom they indoctrinate as "greeters." And, they can get downright insulting, demeaning and nasty if you demand they actually protect, defend . . .
Again, and as always: much worse going on but it exhausts me to relive and detail it.
I ask, yet again - when will we defend our homes???

Rick Hayduk does not know how to manage this property. If he did, he would increase the PS force and make sure the quality of life rules were enforced. I don't feel safe or comfortable living here and will be glad to leave. I will make sure to spread the truth about this awful place everywhere I go. It should be telling about Blackstone/SPS priorities. They fire long term employees like McClellan and Grace, but they keep Knapp onboard. It should come as no surprise that the Golub notices are back with Knapp still on payroll, as he is the king of Golub notices.

ReplyDeleteWhat in the hell does Peter Stuyvesant think Rick can do about this? It’s just gotten so routine for him/her to say it, so they instinctively say it for something Rick has absolutely no control over.
AG Schneiderman is a failure at tenant advocacy while he also "positioned" himself as a tenant advocate. In his two terms in office he investigated 1 landlord for harassment. Just one landlord in all his two terms in office of the New York State Attorney General. With advocates like that tenants do not need enemies.

ReplyDeleteI know it a bit rainy outside but in just a few minutes I saw at least two dogs without lanyards in Stuy Town, another mattress thrown out without required covering for bedbugs (and near the Management office once again), two motorized bikes that were running in Stuy Town. This is Sunday afternoon. I wasn't even purposefully looking.

ReplyDeleteIf it's the store on this (east) side of 1st, it is in the territory of stores under the wing of Stuyvesant Town, though not Hayduk, but an old pal who deals with the rental of those stores.

They claim to be onboard with affordable housing and keeping the rent regulations intact or improved (from the tenants' POV), yet they were so embroiled in the sale of this place to Blackstone. Every time I see a photograph of that Steinberg woman at a rally I want to vomit. Same with that Marsh character with all his politicing and telling people who to vote for and crawling around the Trump Lobbyist Keith Powers. We don't have a TA. They are part of the Landlord/RGB lobby really. Assholes. Marsh, DeBlasio and Goradnick are/were the Triumvirate of Evil.

ReplyDeleteI'm surprised the older tenants (who are truly rent stabilized) aren't paranoid and terrified! Knowing your landlord wants you dead (or institutionalized) and will swarm your apartment before you are even in the ground, must be a very depressing reality to live with. It must be especially hard for those who are alone and not in good health. Funny thing is, they seem to be quite a cheerful bunch and some of them actually trust that Hayduk character. That generation (the "Boomers") are a pretty tough, resilient bunch and will fight for what is theirs and take no prisoners. Many of them have good lawyers! Many of them raised good lawyers* and those who didn't raise their own, know where to find them! I hope they all live to be 100 - at least 100.

I agree that many of the older tenants like and trust Hayduk. They will not believe that he is working with management to destroy this community. Just because he answers their e-mails and chats with them, they think he is great. I love the way that on the TA site, Peter Stuyvesant always tells the bloggers to e-mail Hayduk. Shows that they are parasites of Blackstone.

I don’t know many older tenants who like Rick, they’ve been around long enough to see through the BS. For the most part it’s a certain demographic (30-50 yr old females) that seem to be the biggest Rick proponents.

ReplyDeleteThe TA's job is to tell Rick themselves so tenants can remain anonymous, free from any fear of retaliation. The TA is not supposed to tell tenants to tell Rick anything. The TA is supposed to solve the problems of the tenants while keeping the tenants safe from landlord's bad acts. If the TA is telling even one tenant to tell Rick anything, then the TA is intentionally failing it's duties and obligations.

Useless as they are, I don't think the TA had anything substantial to do with the Blackstone deal. They wanted to buy the place and when Garodnick waved that little bait under their noses, they completely abandoned any interest in being a tenants association. John Marsh may be a crawler around politicians, but he has no power or authority and wouldn't have even been allowed to be a fly on the wall at an important meeting.
ReplyDelete7:08, I completely agree. The statement from Peter Stuyvesant telling tenants to contact Rick about anything is not what they should be doing. They tell people to contact Rick knowing damn well they won’t, and therefore the issue goes unsolved.

ReplyDeleteI am ready to believe that the TA Facebook Page is being censored by "Peter Stuyvesant." I posted a very thorough question about management's air conditioner policy on Thursday afternoon, including pictures of a unit I recently had installed. You have no choice in terms of which unit to buy. Without going into too much detail, I now have a "thru-the-wall" unit in a "thru-the-wall" sleeve.... in my WINDOW PANE. Others have complained on the FB page of the noise level these units produce. My post has yet to be "approved," probably because it raises questions management doesn't want to (or can't) answer.

I would love to confront these suitcase rollers, but it is management that is allowing them to stay here and might even be promoting it. It is not our place to confront them. ReplyDeleteAll visitors who stay here should register with PS. A requirement. But, as you said, it won't happen.
I hope the tenants who are renting out their apartments on Airbnb are aware of the consequences if the IRS catches up with them. And if they are in rent stabilized apartments (real RS) the penalties the RSB can come after them with. They should ask themselves if it is really worth the risk, especially as they are pissing off so many of their neighbors with their "enterprise." All it takes is a really pissed-off neighbor to "drop a dime" and most know how and where to go about it.
