In Stuy Town and Peter Cooper we see more and more Lithium batteries being used. Skateboards, delivery cycles, electric walkers, etc. While most are safe, there is still a danger if not properly used and from a reputable dealer.

“In all of these fires, these lithium-ion fires, it is not a slow burn; there’s not a small amount of fire, it literally explodes,” FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh told reporters. “It’s a tremendous volume of fire as soon as it happens, and it’s very difficult to extinguish and so it’s particularly dangerous.”
Dylan Khoo, an analyst at tech intelligence firm ABI Research, said electric bikes and scooters use batteries which can be around 50 times larger than the one in a smartphone. “So when a fire does happen, it’s much more dangerous,” Khoo said.
All lithium-ion batteries use flammable materials, and incidents such as the one in the Bronx are likely the result of “thermal runaway,” a chain reaction which can lead to a fire or catastrophic explosion, according to Khoo.
“This process can be triggered by a battery overheating, being punctured, or an electrical fault like a short circuit,” Khoo said. “In cases where fires occur spontaneously while charging, it is likely due to manufacturing defects.”
According to Kerber, the number of lithium-ion battery-based fires is growing with enormous frequency both in the United States and internationally, particularly when it comes to e-bikes and e-scooters, due to an uptick in purchases of these products during the pandemic.
“After Covid started, scooter use went dramatically up, especially in places like New York City, for deliveries,” Kerber said. “People started to get overcharged for them and turned to manufacturers which happened to have lower quality control with the battery systems. The quality manufacturers are not having issues.”
“It will continue to happen until there are regulations around the quality of these devices,” Kerber said.

Now we have no safety in the laundry rooms because the cretins running this dump have removed the locks. We have all kinds of lowlifes and human vermin roaming the buildings looking to steal packages, get into apartments and they frequently sleep and piss and shit on the stairs and the laundry rooms will soon be accommodating.
Our landlord-friendly Councilman, Keith Powers, has sponsored a bill that will prevent landlords from doing criminal background checks on prospective renters. I doubt that this crew do that, anyway. Anybody with a bank account can rent here if they are stupid enough.

I agree with you 100% about the wheelchairs and walking devices, STR. Their owners (and carers, if applicable) are probably a lot more caring and responsible that the users of e-bikes and skateboards.
Adults riding those scooters look ridiculous and boy do they speed by you.
There are no enforced rules, so scooters with adults on them are fun and can get you places quicker. Get out of the way, slowpoke!

I have noticed that on the non-TA Facebook people will advertise for room mates. It seems that Management is bypassed. This is not good for our security and safety. Now our idiot Councilman, Keith Powers, is trying to get a bill passed that will eliminate the requirement for Management to do a criminal background check on prospective tenants. Already, we have people who come and go and AirBnB guests, and room mates change all the time. We just don't know who the hell lives here and neither does Management. No wonder we have so much theft and petty crime on the property. It will likely escalate and it is time we stopped blaming "outsiders" when we have no idea who actually is living here and who isn't. Management has no idea either. The one and only thing that Management cares about is MONEY. Human life, safety, security and wellbeing are not anything they care about. I would not be surprised to see Blackstone promote dog fight events in PCV. Lots of pit bulls, pit bull mixes and specific Blackstone-banned aggressive breed dogs are openly paraded around PCV anytime 24/7/365. Before Blackstone, ownership of these prohibited dogs was rare and hidden. They were occasionally seen being walked quietly in the dark during late night/pre-dawn hours. Since Blackstone, not anymore.
The BEST thing about Stuyvesant Town is happening right now. The beautiful trees have turned green and the blossoms are in full bloss! The grounds are not as green as they used to be because so many trees were murdered in order to turn the Oval into a picnic patch and many were murdered to make room for more atrocious "amenities," but there are still enough left to make the place a spirit-lifting haven for birds, squirrels and humans. Note that it is only the humans who destroy the beauty of nature; the birds and critters enhance it and depend on it.
Without the beautiful grounds that have been left unspoiled Stuyvesant Town is just an ugly, old housing project that was built to be low-rent housing for returning veterans and regular working class people. The only thing "Luxury" about it is the beautiful grounds. They were created to make an oasis in the city for the hard-working people and returning veterans to enjoy some beauty even though living in plain, no-frills, project-style buildings. It was safer and cleaner back then and had a management that cared, but it was never luxury and never meant to be.

I live over the a dog shit patch and yesterday morning there was a dog barking his head off. I heard somebody yell from a window: "Make your dog shut up!" The dog went quiet then.
My fear is that in this trigger happy country we live in and the stress that we have to endure in this dump, somebody will eventually snap and shoot a yapping dog or even a person. We've had a few psychopaths go through this dump. It is really so bad now that normally sane people can be driven over the edge.
Now we don't have T&V, we don't hear about the suicides and assaults in this project. I know for a fact that there was a suicide in my building not too long ago. This place could put somebody over the edge with all the noise total deterioration of the quality of life here. PS are only for decoration. They are not allowed to do anything about people who make life hell for everybody else. They are strictly forbidden to do anything about quality of life problems. That was buffoon Hayduck's brilliant idea. It was also his idea to take names of the directories in the lobbies and name everybody new "Private" and put the ridiculous "Welcome Home" on the the doors. We have no idea who lives here.
I am going to install a little doorbell camera on my door. My nabes are ok with it. I hear the elevators opening and closing and people checking out the apartment doors all the time. Had a lot of packages stolen from in front of my door, as have had my nabes. You have to look out for yourself in this dump. I just wish some investigative reporter would take an interest in how rotten this management is. There are two apartments on my floor that are occupied by private arrangement with the tenants of record who quietly moved out. Management doesn't know shit about who lives here legally and who does not. And what's more, they don't fucking care!

I think several people who actually live here (not students and transients) are getting those Ring cams. Management diminishes our security and safety all the time. They are taking the locks off the laundry rooms and probably they will remove the locks from the carriage rooms too. There are so many students and roommates here, who are temporary residents as opposed to real tenants and Management has to provide keys to the carriage and laundry rooms to all of those people. Anybody can get into the buildings these days and the places such as the stairwells, laundry rooms and carriage rooms are very unsafe. We always felt very safe living here, but not now. We have to look out for ourselves and do what we have to do in order to protect ourselves.
I just read on the TA facebook that management is removing the locks from the laundry room doors. Are they out of their tiny, minds??????? With all the undesirables who hang out around the property and get into the property looking for "opportunities," they want us to use the laundry rooms with no locks on the doors designed to keep US safe whilst we do our laundry (especially very early or very late in the day) and to keep out the human garbage that prowls this property?!!!!! Is this Kennedy woman and her .... whomever she reports to .... mentally defective? It would seem so to me.
Apart from taking away our safety whilst doing laundry in these dank, ugly laundry rooms which usually don't have many people present at the same time, there is always the risk that some piece of filth will go picking through out stuff (especially when it is drying) and take it out and sell it across on 14th Street.

Well, we had a heat and hot water shutdown Friday night.
Another one last night that went over pred8cted time.
And hour after it was restored we were informed there would be no heat or hot water all day today, so basically without heat or hot water for 24 hours (although who am I kidding, we never have any heat)

I wonder if they realize they are coming to an overpriced, overrated slum where they will get no heat during the coldest months (or very, very little heat at best); the water runs shit-brown most of the time and there is absolutely no peace and quiet at any time of the day or night because a huge number of undergrad students dorm here; "management" does not enforce any of the carpeting rules and the walls are paper-thin. Singapore is indeed one of the most law-abiding and cleanest places on the planet. The rule of law can be a bit draconian at times, but at least there is a rule of law. New York City is the polar opposite to Singapore and Stuyvesant Town is NOT one of the best places to move into after living in Singapore. I predict culture shock unless they are returning New Yorkers.
I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy and the minute my lease is up I am OUTTA HERE! Would never have even thought of moving in if I had any idea of what it really is like and how horrendously badly run it is. I had always heard good things about it. Has anyone reading this ever been confronted and harassed and then followed by a group (4-6) of girls aged 12-15 inside Stuyvesant Town at night?
This happened to me tonight. I don't understand where any of their parents are, why young girls are out at night playing ball (loudly, including pretty violently bouncing soccer and basketballs) as they scream, shriek, laugh like hyenas, chase each other around in locked and off-limits-at-night playgrounds.
I don't understand who taught them to harass, heckle, provoke, follow for blocks, just about stalk people taking a walk at night. Possibly photographing, videoing, provoking, mocking, staring, coughing at, behaving as if they are laying in wait.
The antecedents stretch back to September when one group insisted on making noise and causing disturbance at night with a soccer ball for weeks. All of the sudden, two more, seemingly unrelated girls are out at night in the dark bouncing balls hard and making noise. Security says they can do that.
I stopped asking all of these children to stop their behaviors. Yet tonight I was first confronted by, and then followed out of Stuyvesant Town and watched, etc. by a combined group of these children. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE???

And standing at the fountain taking pictures or talking. Or roaming in braying, drinking-beer couples or packs or herds.
The standard warm or hot weather uniform of young women on weekend nights is $20-for-sexual-favor attire. In pouring, cold rain? High heels, dress barely crotch-covering, wearing light or no jacket?
Girls seemingly screaming literally for the sake of screaming and disturbing people? In cold, pouring rain at night?
My nerves are much too sensitive for this. But I was surprised when a friend, whose constitution is a laid-back, easy-going, nearly imperturbable one, told me a few days ago that when the hot weather descends, she is leaving Stuyvesant for many weeks because even she cannot endure the numbers of true assholes infesting the grounds day and night.

Now that East 14th Street is a fetid slum, peopled on the streets by mentally ill and drug addicted low-lifes, they want to make this place even less safe for the over-paying, long-suffering tenants. Already we have the dregs from outside wandering the stairs and halls, looking for packages to steal (as well as places to relieve themselves or sleep). Now the total FOOLS who are supposed to be running this place are making living here even more dangerous. Gun violence is at an all time high in the entire country, including New York City and they do NOT run background checks on who they rent to. In fact, they don't even KNOW who is living here! Two apartments on my floor are occupied by people who are not the ones who sign the rent checks. I know that for a fact that they are illegal sublets occupied by relatives of the real leaseholders.
We have little-to-no security/public safety force and what we do have are not allowed (or even motivated) to do anything to protect us. They are nothing more than "mall cops" with no training in protection or apprehension.
Maybe "Management" should take the locked front doors off the buildings. Might as well. It's no wonder that real tenants here install their own locks and are resorting to "Ring" doorbell cameras at this point.
There's a post on the TA FB about how two OUTSIDERS went into the laundry room and did their laundry there. "Security" said they will "run the tape" - big f**king deal!
This poor apology for a "management" is criminally incompetent and is endangering out lives all the time. It's just a matter of time before somebody is killed by somebody getting in from outside. Most of "Public Safety" are too young to shave, let along carry a weapon. They're not here to protect us. We have no protection. We also have no Management. Just an incompetent bunch of former hotel and bar alumni.
I wish we had a real Tenants Association with balls who would step up to the plate like the organization of same name did years ago. This so-called "management" has really gone way too far in endangering the tenants here. It's almost as though they WANT to hurt us and sit and plan various ways to do it. I dread to think how many e-bikes and e-scooters are being charged in apartments on this property. Management enforces NO rules except that we pay the rent and the recently mandated notice about lithium batteries is obscured in my building - and I'm sure that is design, not accident.
We do not have a real "Management" here. Not a well-trained residential management team. Hayduk had no experience of managing residential properties; he was part of a management team at a resort in Florida. Currently, we do not have a Manager. We have a young lady from the catering/entertainment world and she is really useless. A very nice young woman, but that doesn't mean she has credentials or training to do the job she is doing now. In fact, I don't think there is anybody here now with the title "Property Manager."
I really fear for the safety and well-being of my family. We moved in just before the place was sold to Blackstone. The former Management was called Compass Rock and I can't remember the name of the Manager at that time. I do remember that they were a pretty useless bunch and we immediately had qualms about whether or not we would stay or break our lease. We stayed when we heard it was being sold to Blackstone, even though we had heard and read terrible things about the company and how it took advantage of poorer countries and made people homeless. We hoped that what we had read and heard (even that the company had been called out by the UN for some reason or other concerning its predatory practices) was inflated criticism and we just hoped for the best and signed a new lease. Big Mistake! Beam Living is worse than Compass Rock! At least there was some sort of Tenant Liaison at CR and we were having talks with her about a bunch of party animals who kept us up till the early hours all the time. I can't remember her name. It wasn't the Donalda woman who we had heard horror stories about. I think she had been fired or retired by then. Anyway, we signed two new leases with Blackstone, mainly because of Covid and didn't want upheaval as we were working from home and we can't wait for the current lease to expire.
I must say our apartment is nicely renovated (I've seen unrenovated units when visiting lovely neighbors) and our appliances are nice, but the noise and the ongoing and increasing theft and petty crime is a problem. We will always warn anyone we ever meet and who is apartment-hunting that BS and BL are an absolute MUST TO AVOID!!!!!! Avoid them like the flu or Covid or Monkey Pox or Bubonic Plague!
I truly think that if they put in a really good, well-trained RESIDENTIAL Management Team in place and got rid of what they currently have on the payroll, this place could be Shangri-La. Or at least close to that! But they do need people who know what they're doing and they need more security measures to be put in place.

Beam/Blackstone is turning profits by turning this place into a transient dorm dump while advertising phony amenities which are actually nuisances. The manager is put here to follow this gradual deterioration of the property. When the old tenants are gone, they will be profiting from high rents obtained by pushing three or four roomies, students, city subsidized, and tourists into short term leases. This is all purposeful, regardless of who manages the property. On another note, my water has been brown more frequently lately.

This asshole of a Mayor is a godsend to fascists like Gov. Abbot and Gov DeSantis. I don't know what the solution is except that the southern border needs to be better protected. When doors are left open in any way in my building, I almost always close them. If it doesn't seem as if the porter has deliberately kept open a door, I close it by untying the cord, or physically cutting it with a scissors. I remove door stoppers. I physically close (click closed - secure) every door which NEEDS TO BE SECURELY LOCKED AND CLOSED.
Every single person living in every single building has the RIGHT and, indeed, the OBLIGATION to secure their safety. Period.
Please do so and encourage every single person to whom you speak to do so. This is a matter of safety, and possibly, sadly, perhaps even life or death (or grievous injury).
I moved in here in 1980 from Brooklyn and was moderately afraid, sometimes, given the drug activity and violence in "Alphabet City."

I'm sure management will be putting them in the numerous vacant apartments in Sty. They can fit about 40 men in a 2BR. They have the halls and stairwells to piss and shit in and they can also convert the laundry rooms by putting about twenty cots in each one. The lights go off by themselves and there are no locks on the doors. The washers are about the right size to use as a toilet. Nobody I know who lives here actually uses those laundry rooms because they are inferior, dangerous and the local laundries do great work for much less cost.

It probably was very nice then. I wasn't born yet at that time. I was born in 1974 and I remember the neighborhood south of 14th (and even 14th itself) was not particularly nice. Regarding the influx of undocumented immigrants: I am an immigrant myself, though I can with a Green Card which was easily obtained because I'm Caucasian and did have a job offer. As much as I love this country (of which I am now a Citizen since many years ago) I can honestly declare that I would NOT have walked through jungles and swam a river (can't swim anyway) and put up with the brutality and suffering that these people coming illegally across the border are subjected to by the people who "aid" them. I would not have even been willing to suffer a several hours long trip on a bus from Florida or Texas to be deposited in NYC and with no place to go. You could even PAY me a zillion dollars to endure any of the aforementioned.
My point is that whatever motivates those people to endure all over the above, must be conditions in their homeland that are so horrible and horrifying that they are not worth living for. Clearly, these good folk are willing to risk death, humiliation and god-knows-what indignity to get here. I wish them luck and God Speed.

I get your drift, and I don't know about Bragg, but I do believe that all the book banning and other restrictions on free speech, etc., on the part of DeSantis, et al, is not very American. He's even taken on Disney (why, I don't know) and Disney brings in a lot of dollars to his state. I wish we could live and let live. Whether Democrat or Republican, we live in a democracy, not an Autocracy and unless you are descended from Native American Indians, we are all the product of immigration and diversity. I would like to think that we will remain a diverse democracy and continue to have empathy and compassion for those who are fleeing from oppressive regimes and just want to live in a free country. I despise Abbott and De Santis, too, but am still thankful for and respect STR, even though don't always fully agree with him. Also, national politics often do affect City government/issues and what happens in this now-horrid slum.

Important Notice for Seniors in ST/PCV and their families: Public Safety personnel FORMERLY used to be of assistance if a tenant fell and had trouble getting up from the floor inside their apartment. But-- based on personal experience--that is no longer the case. They will now only call 911 on the tenant's behalf. Blackstone's obviously afraid of possible lawsuits if their people screw-up. Since PS doesn't enforce any QOL rules, either, they presently have NO valid function at all. EVERYTHING Blackstone does here is the true screw-up. @poster at 11:14 AM: A very elderly lady on my floor fell and her daughter came screaming to me for help. I could tell that she had broken her arm, so I put a cushion under her head and dialed 911. PS (Security then) came shortly before the EMS because I also called them and let them know and they did not attempt to lift the lady. The EMS guys lifted her onto a stretcher/gurney and took her down to the ambulance. Turned out she had broken her hip as well as her arm.
It is not wise for a non-medic to try to lift an elderly person (or anybody who's had a bad fall, but especially an older person) because you don't know how much damage they have done and you might make it worse. Best to just kneel beside them and reassure them that help is coming.
I had enough know-how to be able to tell that the poor lady's arm was broken, but apart from putting a cushion behind her head to keep her comfortable as possible and to ensure she could breathe comfortably, I butted out and tried to calm her hysterical daughter (who was slightly disabled herself).
Possibly, PS would be able to do emergency resuscitation if somebody had stopped breathing, but lifting a fallen person is a no-no.
9:41 PM: Thank you very much for your post. Not only did you do a caring, helpful thing for the elderly woman who fell, and her daughter, but you greatly reassured and educated me. I'd initially felt worry reading that Security will not help a fallen resident up in their apartment.

There are more real NYers in Florida than in New York. No state has seen more people and more jobs leave than NY. At least we are number 1 at something. NY used to have 3 times as many residents as did Florida. Now, Florida is the third most populous state (Texas is #2). While NY has dropped from 2 to 5. Even Wall street firms are leaving Wall Street. Guess, where they are going. That's right Texas and Florida. The banking crisis is expected to get worse due to the expected defaults on mortgages on Commercial real estate, especially in large cities with again NY being #1. They think it could be as many as 50% of commercial mortgages that won't be paid in 4Q23. Think there are empty buildings now, just wait. Oh and before you say so what, there goes the tax base, so expect your city and state taxes to rise, again. Over 1,000 millionaires left NYC in just the 4th quarter of 2022, leaving the onerous tax rates behind. They were slackers as many times that rate left prior.

Does anyone know approximately how many birds die each year due to the solar panels on Stuy Town roofs? I heard one porter say he was tired of cleaning up the dead birds, so I became curious, especially now that we are finding out that those wind farms in the ocean are killing whales. I also noticed that we have crows in the neighborhood for the last couple of years. Since crows are scavengers it makes sense they are here for the dead birds.
The dog situation here is disgusting. One of our elevators was taken by a Amazon delivery person doing his job. I had to wait ten minutes for the other elevator because a girl had three, yes three dogs two of which were oversized. There was no room for me.

I never joke about my work, 007. The next main post will be about the good and bad points of renting here. And there are some good points.
One good point is the maintenance service here. I have heard people complain that they cannot get hold of maintenance or they must wait a long time for service. This has not been my experience. I have always received pleasant and prompt solutions to my requests. The only exception of course is when it comes to heat.
