Stuy Town to Adam Rose and Maya Autret: We're Not Interested in Your Summer on the Oval Events

How do I know the above is very true? Look at the figures. I've monitored several Summer on the Oval events this past summer, including the last one (thank heavens) today, and none of them had an attendance that I would call impacting. Today, when I was there after 3:30 pm, I counted heads and came up with about 125-130 (difficult to do an accurate count with people moving around, etc). I will grant that maybe another 50 may have turned up later, but the number still is shy of 200. Even if another 100 turned up, that still is a low number considering that ST/PCV has a population of over 25,000 and probably much more considering all the pressurized walls here. And let's not forget that about 75 of those initially "in attendance" were already there, young folks sunbathing themselves hours before the concert began.

This low turnout happens all the time, this after the e-mails, the deluxe brochures slipped under the door, the signs all over the complex listing the events--and the clear invitation, with outside promotions, for ALL New Yorkers to attend Summer on the Oval.

Here are some photos from these events. This one from when the circus came to Stuy Town:

Battle of the Paint Brushes, or whatever the hell that event was called:

Today's grand finale!....

A close-up of the same shot, zeroing in on the performer. Note the disinterested sunbathers in the foreground:

And another shot of the packed crowds:

From the other side, a closer shot of people on the lawn listening to the concert. (You can click on the photo to see its larger size):

So, Adam and Maya--a BIG FAIL.

But, perhaps, it is not that big of a fail, because one of the chief reasons, if not the supreme reason, for Summer on the Oval is to present Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village as a happening place for outsiders, the potential renters that management is hoping to attract. This is why the rental office on 1st Ave has this facing the street and passersby:

The photo right above, btw, is of a new monitor placed at the rental office window. Pretty nice, isn't it? You may see yourself there in the future if you attended any of the events and were photographed.

So Rose Associates is spending CW Capital's money on this nonsense, while areas of the complex (especially now Peter Cooper!) look lousy, and buildings need cleaning and painting, and the laundry rooms are appalling, and there's still furniture being dumped all of the place, and dog urine smells wafting up from the new designated dog areas (most of the complex), and gaudy and smelly food trucks (the newest brilliant idea) mar the Oval. Ace, you've done your job and you've done it well!

  1. Okay, clearly you watch too much FOX/FAUX news and get your journalistic cues from them. I was there for like 3+ hours from 3:30 to 7, those shadows are well before 3 p.m. before the music started and so you are obviously just pretending no one came. The lawn was packed. PACKED. We left at 7 and more folks were coming and the music was great. Your prevaricating agenda is too obvious and you have lost all journalistic credibility. You're acting like tea baggers the way you just make up facts to suit your agenda.

  2. Okay, I hit a nerve. A few more insulting messages from the same person (management/American Leisure/whatever). That photo does not lie. I took that photo at about 3:45, the concert was well underway, so you don't know what YOU are talking about.

I do assume, and in my analysis stated so, that more people would eventually arrive.

But I was passing by later, for sure well after 4, and the lawn was not packed at all.

Perhaps the lawn did become packed the final hour of the concert when people realized this would be the last concert of the summer and wished to celebrate the end of these things for the year.

    Hope you enjoyed the screeching.

  3. For your pleasure, and since you are sending me more insults, I posted another shot of the packed crowds. Taken, again, around 3:45pm.

    ReplyDelete
  4. And I added even ANOTHER shot for you, actually the same photo as the first, but zeroed in, showing the performance underway. Again, about 3:45pm.

    ReplyDelete
  5. You're just skipping the actual people on the lawn. Do you feel good about this? What are you gaining?

    ReplyDelete
  6. There ARE people on the lawn. You can see them in the photos. Not many at that time for sure, but that just proves my point.

Did you count heads, btw? What estimate would you give for how many people turned up?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I walked through the Oval at around 4:00 pm on my way to get the bus on 20th Street. What a horrible howling was going on there. Didn't see too many people though. At least not I would expect to be there for a concert. Those that were there didn't seem to be paying much attention to the "show," because they weren't even looking in the direction of the stage/platform. I did notice that a lot of the sunbathers had those little white cords and earbuds. Obviously, a lot of people like to go to the Oval to sun themselves, but don't care for the so-called concerts.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The last photo I'm putting up for you. It's from the other side of the Oval and looking directly into "the crowds." Even if you grant double that number in attendance later in the concert, how many would that be?

    ReplyDelete
  9. About 500 or so. Maybe more, if you counted the folks on the benches around the Oval. They were spread out all over the lawn. Maybe 300+ when we arrived at 3:25 and by 7, 500+. There was a really big act coming on in a bit, but we had to go. It was a wonderful time, folks were having lots of fun and the music really was great.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I did a HEAD COUNT after you arrived and came up with less than 150, and you tell me "maybe 300." You're way off. You just don't know how to measure crowds.

If you say there was over 500 by 7, then the crowd probably was half that at about 250, which is actually close to my estimation of how many more people COULD have arrived later to be able to reach that number.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The photos don't lie. I could give a rats ass, no pun intended, about the events one way or the other but they are POORLY attended. Week after week STR posts photos and the truth is clear. We have 35k or so people living here, thousands more in the surrounding East Village and at best 200 people show up? Really? FAIL!

Whoever is paying for the brochures, kiosks, and tv monitors needs to put the kabosh on this venture next summer. It's simply not worth the effort. Not when we have substandard laundry facilities, disposed furniture tossed about place like Johnny fucking Appleseed, a vastly reduced staff...should I go on?

We are in default. Put this money back into the buildings and maintenance services. Would it kill them to give us a porter on the weekend?

Enough with Lady Maya and her failures as a food peddler and event planner. Get real! You know we are screwed when hot dog vendors and jug bands are the draw to fill apartments. Where are their priorities? Who is in charge here?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Whoever is posting as this "Anonymous" is friends with one of the performers. Could you BE any more obvious?

We're sorry nobody showed up to see your friend play in the prestigious Stuyvesant Town Oval at 4 pm on a hot and humid Saturday afternoon while most people are out of town or couldn't care less or slammed their windows shut and turned on the AC but fuck off already.

  13. >>Those that were there didn't seem to be paying much attention to the "show," because they weren't even looking in the direction of the stage/platform.<<

Exactly. That's what one of the close-up shots shows. And that's been my experience seeing these concerts. The first hour or so is made up of mostly sunbathers, who have been present hours before. They are turned toward the sun and away from the stage. Gradually, the lawn starts seeing more residents coming in, but never in the numbers some would have us believe. The largest gathering I saw was at that world music and food event. There was probably around 250 people there, much as the size MAY have been this time.

  14. Lady Maya is part of the Stroller mafia. This explains everything!

  15. LOL--fuck off? That's your retort? You're an intellectual giant aren't you, batty? Plus, Hannity here is only posting the comments that support his argument. It's like Hitler's last days here, only hearing what you want to hear. You people are living in a deluded world set in 1955.

    ReplyDelete
  16. >>We have 35k or so people living here, thousands more in the surrounding East Village and at best 200 people show up? Really? FAIL!<<

As I said, I was there around 3:45, took photos and did a head count. Later I passed by the Oval. It maybe about 4:30 if not later. There were more people present, but nothing was packed. More people were spread out across the lawn, that's all.

Let's even give "Anon 8:50pm" a final crowd size of 300 or so. Success or failure considering the grand finale nature of the event, the promotions, and the open door policy to the rest of New York?

And even IF crowds started miraculously streaming in to match Anon's guess at 500 plus (!), which I can't dispute with any photos or with a head count because I was not there later in the evening, I've been monitoring several Summer at the Oval events, like that Art Battle thing, and each one did not get any such dramatic numbers, and a couple were VERY poorly attended throughout their entire time.

The another puzzlement, and perhaps the giveaway about Anon being friends with one of the performers, is that Anon claims "the music really was great"....

I know tastes differ, but there was that woman performer (the one I heard after 4pm) who was doing a Yoko Ono, and I dunno, but that sounded more painful than great.

  17. I've been aware of Lady Maya's Rezi Classes for a while. I was going to do a blog post on how similar they sound to Oval Essential events. Or is it the other way around?

    ReplyDelete
  18. >>Plus, Hannity here is only posting the comments that support his argument.<<

I'm posting your comments, too. Of course, not the ones that JUST repeat the same insults over and over again. That you get to do once, and only once.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You are going after this Maya woman's CHILDREN??? What kind of people are you? I don't even know this woman, but I am going directly to the management office on Monday and telling them that you are posting jeering comments about Maya and her children on this blog. Seriously, there's something wrong with you. You're like child molesters online--you spend so much time together and hating everyone that you think this is a normal way to act.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Now you're getting hysterical. No one is going after anyone's children.

No wonder you can't judge a crowd size.

Take a valium and go to sleep already.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have a screen shot of this page printed out, so you can't pull it later. You'll probably be evicted if you keep this up. Do not take this to a personal level against other people. That's just craziness.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Again, you are hysterical now. No one is taking anything to a personal level. Rezi Classes is a business run by Maya and used by Rose Associates or at least Maya's skills are being used by Rose, as she is the Director of Programing here. Everything is online (in the public eye) about this business, including a brochure that talks about providing "property management with a compelling means of attracting and retaining residents."

Rezi offers classes (in many of the same areas that Oval Essentials has its events) and also does "event planning."

    ReplyDelete
  23. What are the grounds for eviction? Drawing attention to events that are costing Stuy Town money which should be spent on maintaining the property? Please DO share that with the management company.

Merely mentioning Stroller Mafia isn't a threat Nancy Grace.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's absurd, of course. Responding to how things are being run here and holding the people in charge responsible for how things are run is not getting "personal" or cause for any type of eviction. I would not tolerate anything that crosses a line.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm assuming that the money that is being spent on these events has already been allocated for the specific purpose of "property promotion," "marketing," or whatever tag may be used, and that the budget has been approved by CW Capital. But the money spent on these events can be put to better use, no? My building needs a paint job, for one, and there are a lot of ugly patches throughout Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village that the grounds people should attend to. (Of course, these are away from 1st Ave.)

The food truck idea was probably considered a wonderful "win-win" because it appears that Rose is not paying for these trucks coming here, so it's a freebie for Rose and, apparently, a freebie for the food trucks (which should really piss off the stores that pay high rents to Rose, of course).

  26. I enjoyed the concert yesterday - I focused on the performers, the people near me and the smiles on their faces that I would think means they were enjoying themselves as they sang along or watched their children dance.

It is too bad this board has become one for ad hominem attacks as it truly detracts from the points made by both sides.

While I understand not everyone is going to enjoy all of the programming provided I give Rose great thanks for some that I truly believe were a great success. The presentation by the head of the National Museum of Jazz this week was an interesting and educational experience that I feel extremely lucky to have attended - would I have gone to Harlem to see it? No. Same thing for the smoothie I purchased on the oval yesterday - I don't think I would have walked to Bruno's to buy one - but I am glad that I did purchase while at the concert. Union Square is pretty close for the able-bodied - but it is too far for me to walk because of health issues - I sure would have loved to buy some ripe tomatoes at the Union Square Greenmarket yesterday and enjoyed them last night on some good bread with a little mayo and salt and pepper. But you know what? I am blessed to be able to buy some today in our StuyTown greenmarket.

So maybe you are not interested in these things - but I can tell you with a great deal of certainty a large number of the members of our community are.

I'd love to meet you sometime - stop by to say hi while I am sitting on a bench outside playground 12 with my tomato sandwich - and the same smile I had on my face at the concert.

  28. "Rose is not paying for these trucks coming here, so it's a freebie for Rose and, apparently, a freebie for the food trucks (which should really piss off the stores that pay high rents to Rose, of course)."

... Lets not forget all the free electricity they are guzzling!
Added to greasy smells, polluted air & noises, next to playground 12 & benches.

This certainly brings our "FAUX news" up a notch.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't understand any of this.

For 40 years or more, there was peace and quiet in this neighborhood. For all of those years, there was undisturbed greenery, polite and neighborly consideration for each other.

No one walked on lawns, nearly no one littered, no one displayed their ugly bodies.

This was community and this was HOME.

Last night, I was literally physically assaulted in my own home for many hours by screaming, shouting, amplified noise bouncing off buildings and echoing.

I could not think or read or pay bills or watch TV. My poor innocent parrot and parakeets were driven crazy by shrieking "musicians."

    I don't comprehend this.

The 13th Precinct hung up on me, told me to put cotton in my ears, told me I was the only complaining. The so-called Security folks here did the same. I was repeatedly told to call 911 and 311, which I did.

Every time I explained, and sometimes pleaded, that my very HOME, my apartment, for which I pay, and under whose lease there is the guarantee of quiet enjoyment, I was told that "they have a permit" to assault me in my own home.

    WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

  30. Get rid of the trucks. Get rid of the concerts. Restore the Oval. Bring the Stuy Town population back down to 25,000.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ok here’s my Recon report at around 5.30 PM. From the north side of playground 12, here are my observations of this event. My generous estimate was around 400 people. The crowd was fairly diverse, mostly an older crowd. The sun worshippers had gone home. What percentage of this crowd were tenants, no way to really determine that but my guess is that, by a slight majority, the crowd were tenants, not visitors.

I did notice something rather important. The people who were sitting in the inside section of the Oval and at playground 12, I did not see ONE person smiling. Most of these people were purposely buried in other things other than the concert . My gut reaction was that they were annoyed that this event was even occurring.

Another personal observation. Is it my imagination but don’t these Rose event employees look like Scientology promoters?

When I returned home, the lead singer of the C&W group was screaming at the top of his way too amplified lungs to motivate the crowd. My wife's birthday was today, she had just returned from her mothers so I had prepared a special meal for her and me to celebrate. Because of the incessant screaming reverberating in our apartment (we face Playground 12) , we bailed out and went out to diner in little India on 6th street. Yes, we actually left Stuyvesant Town and went to the EV on a Saturday night to get some peace and quit. Oh the irony.

Bottom line. These concerts, with their huge sound stage and the attendant support vehicles are overkill for this community. When these concerts first started , back in the days of the late tenure of Met Life, they were low key, with a slightly raised platform for the bands . The music basically sucked (wedding band quality) but it least it was not booming and the kids jumped around and seemed to have a good time.

  32. I was there at 5:30pm, and it was packed. I'm just a normal resident with NO agenda what so ever. Just thought I'd let you know. I actually came here just to see how you prove there was no one there.

I appreciate what you're doing, but the way you treat people who disagree you with little to no respect is really sad. If we are community working together, then why not try to respectfully disagree and work toward getting people on your side? Why claim everyone who disagrees with you works for management?

At this point, I believe you are pushing many people like me away. Perhaps you don't care, but there is power in numbers. And I'm happy to help make the community better, but it's hard to be associated with rude people. You may want to consider that, if you really are trying to make the community a better place. If you're not, then go ahead being antagonistic and rude to people with differing opinions.

  33. I think it is outrageous that Rose Associates is wasting so much of its resources on these appalling "concerts" in the Oval, along with the cost of advertising these cheesy events. They are certainly not practicing good stewardship over the funds that they have available. These carnival-like events and food trucks are not going to attract new renters; they just bring in people from outside who use our grounds, crank up the cost of maintenance and then go home. If anything, these events deter serious renters who would actually contribute to the fiscal health of the complex. It's galling that Rose is using funds for this while we have filthy buildings, substandard laundry facilities and a plethora of empty apartments. If Rose wants to rent these empty apartments to anything other than the transient and student demographic (who suck out the quality of life and give back nothing) then they need to get their priorities straightened out. Of course, if we had a viable tenants' association with any interest in the diminishing quality of life and the squandering of resources by Rose, we could have a petition drive or a class action to bring CW Cap's attention to these abuses.

    ReplyDelete
  34. >>I appreciate what you're doing, but the way you treat people who disagree you with little to no respect is really sad.<<

Actually I'm a very nice guy. Can't you tell?

    ReplyDelete
  35. >>So maybe you are not interested in these things - but I can tell you with a great deal of certainty a large number of the members of our community are.<<

How large a number, though? Remember, there's at least 25K of us, and all of this is open to the outside public.

But numbers in themselves do not make things right. I am positive that if Rose put down a bowling alley on the Oval Lawn, people would play. Perhaps you would, too.

Management has to introduce some kind of sensitivity to its decisions, at least on an aesthetic level. I'm fine, and have stated so, with the occasional concert. Why not have one to welcome summer and then one to say bye to its end? Why let in outsiders to events that are supposed to be "community" and, presumably, meant to instill a sense of such?

Regarding the green market, my one major beef with that is how the ground looks after the green market leaves. Have you seen how that area looks for six days? Rose has done nothing to alleviate that look; instead when you walk by it, you think of a slum.

Food trucks? Overdone and an insult to those of us who value the "green" of the Oval and certainly an insult to the food stores that pay high rent to Rose.

BTW, today I saw a first at the Oval, near the green market. A booth for a business, Union Square Eye Care. So now Rose is bringing in business booths into the Oval area. Rose is now turning the Oval not just into a green market but a market, period. Is this right? Does it NOT bother you?

  36. It's tenant harassment by management.

    Pure and simple.

And they're getting away with it.

  37. The only attacking so far is being done by STR's new resident loon who constantly makes references to Hitler, Fox News and falsifies claims of child endangerment. It looks like your blog is her new local stop between Bellevue and Beth Israel's psych ward!

But seriously, making reference to someone's business that may or may not be similar to the Oval Essentials is NOT "going after...children." Neither is referring to someone as being in the Stroller Mafia.

You want to talk about psychos walking among us, let's talk about the Stroller Mafia for a minute.

On Lux Living I published an email, one not written by me, in which the author made a crack at the end about the D.C. Sniper. The Stroller Mafia FREAKED out and with all the irrationality and hysterics that come with a mob mentality went complaining to MGMT about their being a potential sniper in the neighborhood. When even Rose wanted nothing to do with it because they knew that within the context of Lux Living is was business as usual, the Stroller Mafia then went to the 13th Precinct.

Two incredibly nice detectives showed up at my apartment while I was writing out Christmas cards with my dog on my lap and asked me about the email I had published. They made it clear they knew the dark humored crack at the end of the email, again, not written by me, was just that, a joke. But they had to waste their time and investigate it because the hysterical Stroller Mafia wouldn't have otherwise. Thank god Kembra Phaler wasn't hanging out at my place that day!

The point here is that if there is anyone dangerous around here it sure isn't STR. It's the small clusters of irrational women who think that by giving birth - an event not unique to them - they should be treated as all supreme beings that must have their demands met, not matter how irrational they are because, they're mommies...awww. Hence the term, Stroller Mafia.

This mob mentality is dangerous, not the blogger ragging on food carts and loud music.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey Lux! Brav to the fucking Oh! lol
    Good work, STR!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I hate to say this, but I wish one of the "stroller mafia" had been equally as "irrational" when that Norwegian nutcase was posting in English on American right wing anti-Islamic blogs. Then maybe 90 camp children in Norway wouldn't be dead right now. As a long-time resident, I'm glad that the cops checked you out, even if they determined you are no risk, which you obviously aren't. Still, you are now speaking "publicly" and so putting yourself in greater scrutiny than just a joke between you and a friend making fun of the women with strollers. You can't just say and do things "in public" and expect no reaction or response. You have no idea who's responding and so, turning your neighbors into objects of hatred may attract the wrong kind of reaction.

I agree with 12:38, that there's nothing wrong with trying to find others who want to make Stuytown better, but you aren't getting any reasonable support from others when you insult, rather than convince or find other common ground to work on together.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm not following just who has been making fun of women with strollers, and even if someone were making fun of women with strollers is that a crime?

There is a now-common term "Stroller Mafia," just as common as "Yunnies (Young Urban Narcissists). Perhaps Yunnies should call the cops, too, whenever someone mentions "Yunnies."

This is getting to the point beyond ridiculous. Man-up or woman-up.

As for hatred, I don't hate Adam Rose or Maya Autret. I actually find Adam simpatico in a weird sort of way, and Maya kinda amusing with her Rezi-style events for the Oval Essentials. They have a job to do, and they are doing it, and I'm not their paymaster.

That said, I don't believe that if I find that they are doing something that's not good for this complex or that's simply pissing me off that I should just keep my mouth shut and grab my ankles.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @3:37

Had the Stroller Mafia been familiar with Lux Living and the writing tone I adopted for the project, anyone with a modicum of intelligence would understand that a passing line in an email - AGAIN NOT EVEN WRITTEN BY ME - should not have been grounds for a police investigation. But instead, they saw ONE post and overreacted.

Unlike REAL psychotics, I do not own a gun, I do not have a criminal background, I am not religious and the only manifesto I one is written by Valerie Solanas - and it was a gift ;)

What's dangerous here is that there is an anonymous person claiming other anonymous people are inciting harm towards children when that is simply not the case here. It just isn't.

SHE is the person that needs to be checked out, not the bloggers.

And to be honest, I am glad the detectives checked me out too so they could see first hand how baseless and irrational these supposed threats are. And what is sad is when there is a real threat, the cops might not respond because of the Stroller Mafia that cried wolf.

  44. Thank you for this post. I have been thinking the same thing every time I see one of these posters or walk by a nearly empty oval during these events. Even if the attendance was 500 people ( which it never is ) you are talking about less than 2% of the population here at PCVST. Sadly all this proves is how management only cares about attracting new tenants, not retaining current ones.

    ReplyDelete
  45. They can have concerts at every playground, circuses in the oval and marching bands roving throughout ST but they will never get me out. I just signed a new 2 year rent stabilized lease and I will sign the next one and the next one until I decide to pass the apartment to my now teenage son. Then he will sign his rent stabilized lease and the next one and so on and so on. So, in reality all CW got for their money was nothing! Money for nothing, that is how we should refer to Rose ASSociateas from now on...money for nothing!

  46. I had to delete a couple of posts that jokingly referenced the artisanal trucks exploding of their own fumes or lack of regulation... because you never know if our resident hyper reader may "cry wolf" and consider herself as a savior of mankind. Sorry, but let's make sure even crazy people can't take our words and twist them for what they are not.

The point was being made in these posts about the events driving tenants out.

    ReplyDelete
  47. OK. But let's just boycott all these ridiculous "events", grease trucks, etc. If the merchants who rent real property from Rose just decide to take their business elsewhere when it is time for them to renew their leases, maybe Rose ASS will get the message that these obnoxious, noisy, smelly events and "amenities" are not welcomed by the majority of tenants.

  53. Although I dont like the idea of these concerts and trucks and all the circus nonsense that Rose ASSociates is dumping on us I am pleased regarding the message this sends. For example since CW Capital obviously has money it is willing to piss away, I no longer return home from work to a stifling hot apartment. Now that I am aware of the robust budget that Rose ASSociates was given by CW Capital, I am not worried about conservation anymore. Now I run all 3 air conditioners 24/7. I imagine if CW and Rose can afford all these wonderful ameities the least I can do is keep up appearances and do al I can to spend their money. Thanks Adam and CW for the free reign with no feeling of guilt since clearly you have money to burn. Plus, as a side effect I am helping out the economy by being a consumer!!! Message recived Adam. Excellent work. Keep it up!I have to go now and get a sweat shirt its getting cold in here!

    You are absolutely right.

  55. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that our utilities are paid by the LL, that's a rarity in most places in this country. But you really want to give them a reason to submeter? Because that's gonna happen if they suddenly experience a real and sustained increase in their electric bill. And you really have no regard for the environment to set it at a reasonable temperature and even occasionally use the economy feature? I want my free A/C to continue, so I act like a responsible citizen to ensure that happens.

  56. To each his/her own. I'm cranking it up!!

  57. Well, 6:49 PM, aren't you a fine individual. Certainly.

Look, they want to submeter anyway. They tried it once but they ran out of money to get the project started.

When they "restart" it, your monthly nut will be based on your actual usage going forward. The reduction in your rent will be based on how much juice you used before the changeover.

By conserving, you're just reducing the amount of the reduction in your bill after the submetering goes through--if ever.

Keep burning those lights, ladies and gentlemen. The only one that loses is Mr. Rose and CW!

  58. Compared to you folks, I am starting to look like a boy scout! My god, you are giving middle income tenants a bad name--I would almost think you are owner/management plants designed specifically to use as bad examples in legislative hearings as to the abuses and irresponsibility of rent stabilization and are putting all good tenants at risk. There's a very immature element to all this hysterical complaining--the real issues get lost in the tone and the minutiae--and it's certainly not building coalitions to help keep the community affordable. There has to be a stronger, more positive and informed, way to get your message out without alienating everyone.

  59. YES!

Hit management where it hurts them.
    In their wallets.....

  60. You are a boy scout. The only way Adam Rose hears any message is if CW reprimands him for pissing off the existing tenants by the ridiculous things he is doing to court more tenants (or better yet fires him). The only way CW hears any message is if you hit them in the pocketbook. Class action suits by the affected tenants is one way, I just don't see that happening especially since there is no tenants association anymore. The other way is to jack up their expenses, the easiest way to do that is to overuse electricity or water or other things they are paying for. I used to fix minor things in my apartment when they broke, not anymore, now I call and have them waste their money sending someone to stop a leak in my toilet or screw a screw back into an appliance. Let them foot the bill!

  61. I, on the other hand, have faucets leaking in the kitchen and the bathroom - and I mean leaking in the way of a constant stream! I prefer to waste the water than bother with their maintenance people. Fortunately, we don't have a drought so I just feel that my pipes are being kept clean by the bathtub and kitchen faucets running 24/7. I am SICK of Adam Rose and his kind. They are beneath contempt.

Keeping the community affordable has nothing to do with quality of life issues. People have a right to complain, and should, if they feel their landlord is neglecting or diminishing quality of life where they live.

  67. I think it's outrageous that management expects tenants to drag their furniture to the curb or pay $75 per item because they have cut so much staff. Taking it to the garbage room is about as far as I'm will to take it. If they want to fine me, I'll fight them in court.

  68. Actually, I always go and check the carriage rooms on a regular basis at the end of the month because I have picked up some lovely little pieces of furniture left by people moving out. Hasn't been so great since the students have been living here, but the real tenants who move out often leave quite nice things behind. Of course, one man's trash is another man's treasure!

  69. I used to do to do that in my younger days (not here at Stuytown, but in Brooklyn or elsewhere), finding a great table on the sidewalk or even getting clothes at stoop sales. But now with the bed bug issue, I don't think I would feel comfortable taking anything used that is made of fabric into my apartment, unless I were absolutely sure of its source and that the previous owner didn't have bed bugs. But hard wood or metal objects are probably fine. BTW, many "nice people" have bed bugs--they bring it home on business trips, from airline/Amtrak train seats, even one of the chain clothing stores in NYC had bed bugs in their clothing. So, it's not a disparagement to our fellow residents as much as a caution.

It's not $75 per item! It's $75 per hour to hire two porters to remove furniture and junk.

Fuck 'em anyway! They can have same porters move the furniture and junk from the carriage rooms just like they always did.

  72. Agreed. I don't think we are quibbling about the rate, rather about the practice.

    Not acceptable.

  73. Not to change the discussion topic, but I had to throw my two cents into the hat Re: Oval Events. I cannot comprehend how anyone could argue with the photographic evidence. Personally, I have walked through the Oval during many of these events and found the turnout to be exactly as the pictures showed: embarrassingly low. Well, that's what happens when you force-feed bad music down the throats of paying tenants: they flee. Those who don't have the option to flee will close all the windows and turn up the AC to drown out the noise. I'm not saying there aren't people who enjoy these events; to say that would be a stretch. However, it's pretty much a given that there are more people against these concerts than there are people in favor of them. The turnout itself and angry letters to T&V, blog posts, etc are the proof. I for one do not want to be held hostage in my apartment every Saturday in July by atrocious, invasive music. The bass would literally make my furniture vibrate (I face the Oval).

  74. When Rose reports back to CW the lack of ROI on the events, they will surely put an end to them.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Doubt it. My guess is they'll just decide to "ramp things up!"
