Stuy Town: Dog Turd Town

So what does this man:

Have to do with this?--

Well, every time you come across a dog turd in Stuy Town or Peter Cooper Village or a pungent dog urine flow blocking your path, you can thank our previous landlord, Rob Speyer (pictured above--the first photo, no jokes, please), for throwing out PCVST's long-standing no-dog rule and allowing the presence of dogs in the complex. BTW, despite his embarrassing tenure here, Robbie is doing very well, thank you, having been selected by Mayor-for-Life Bloomberg, to chair the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City (!).  Adding to this accomplishment, Robbie is also now chairing the Real Estate Board of New York, may the good Lord help us all.  It just proves that if you are connected to wealth here in Manhattan, you get your ass kissed by the powers that be and you rise to positions of influence despite being clueless and quite possibly an idiot.

Back to dog tales....

Within just two days, I have come across in my relative brief walk to the outside of Stuy Town, dog turds and streams of dog urine a plenty.  The circular asphalt walkway around the Oval is now a scattered painting-in-the-works with the paints being wet dog turd smears, dry dog turd smears, and streams of dog urine that, many times, go from one side of the walkway to the other.  Below is the result of several piles of dog turd that a dog owner yesterday tried to clean up with a water bottle, unsuccessfully:

At least she tried, but this clown, or clowns, didn't:

The above was a photo taken today in front of 5 Stuy Town Oval.  Closer to the 1st Ave loop, another trail of dog turd was also in evidence:

Folks, this is just going to get worse.  Each month.  Public Safety makes what seems like a publicity attempt to put a dent in the dog infractions here, but after two weeks to a month, it's back to the same disregard and lack of enforcement.  And, so far, the enforcement seems to be just near the Oval Fountain area.  I still have yet to see Public Safety make it out beyond this area in any serious endeavor.  And the fact that there are now legally-registered prohibited dog breeds being walked about Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village with impunity, further damns the view that the dog rules are being enforced around here.

Well, an early-morning dog walker said he saw a female "student" peeing on the grass. Then she sat down there. Security said they can't keep up with it. I'd take the dogs over the "students" any day.

Was she good-looking at least?

STR said: "quite possibly an idiot." More like congenital idiot.

New rule for dog owners: Unless your animal tells you absolutely, positively that its bowels are in fine working order and nothing loose will emerge, you must take the animal to the curb to do its business, preferably between two parked cars, which will not endanger you or the animal in any way.

Isn't this about the time when all dog owners start saying "but there are cigarette butts at my outside door!!!!"? WHat I can never understand is the total lack of integrity on the part of dog owners here. It's ok to be honest people...sometimes even liberating. You guys won, nothing is going to change. It's ok to say "to hell with all of you non-dogowners who take exception to all the fecal matter on the property, dogs are allowed and this is how it's going to stay". Come on now, give honesty a try. Just look at the first poster talking about a supposed girl peeing instead of condeming what he/she sees in the pictures. This is a good representation of all of you so thank you poster. I suppose you could just continue to take the tack that it's not a qol issue, but the latter would be so much more refreshing.

As far as the rest of us? Well, this is how it's going to be so we all have our decisions to make.

At least the dog owners who have their pets shit on the pathways and the Oval and the grassy areas have a modicum of class and consideration. At least they take their pets OUTSIDE the apartment and building. The truly classy individuals are those who let Fido out in the hallways or the stairways. Nothing like bounding down the stairs in the morning and being greeted by a pile of freshly laid shit! Ah, the aroma! the aesthtic beauty of the the perfectly formed turd! How about the smell of urine in the hallways and stairs? Or the incessant yapping of the canines throughout the day.
It is cruel to leave a dog alone in an apartment without any social interaction. But these clods don't understand that. The porter in my building has one word for the introduction of dogs to StuyTown-PCV - a "nightmare." May Tishman-Speyer, CW Capital and Adam Rose step in the karmic shit they so smellingly deserve!

STR, the top photograph made me lose my lunch. The ones that followed weren't much prettier!

STR, It's hard to believe anyone would have found that out-of-control squatting female good looking. But to each his own!
Rob Speyer should be in jail, not because of the dogs, but because of all the destruction he caused and he should not have been allowed to just walk away.

I'd rather deal with a ton of dog shit when I'm walking through the Sty with my elderly mother, than even one those asshole bicycle riders. They are the people I really despise and wish had never been allowed in here.

It gives me great satisfaction to know that just the presence of my dog on this property makes you all so ANGRY! Or should I say ANGRIER than you already are - smile today!

Management could hose down the walking paths daily. And use soap.

"The dog owning intelligentsia."

Don't own a dog, never have, never will. The bicycle riders bother me because I am sick of the way they think they have right of way and are so careless, entitled and so out of place on the grounds. They should stick to the loop roads and not ride on the walkways.

AS a dog owner I find these photos disgusting. Not all of us show such a blatant disregard for the property and our neighbors in general. It's unfortunate that some dog owners are giving all of us a bad name.

STR, concerning the first image of that series, it behooves you to warn us before you post something that graphic! Now you know I'm not referring yo the poo schmeers!

The sane answer to the ever-growing dog problem is to put in a moratorium on dog ownership here. No new dogs. Obviously, this would be difficult to enforce given past experience with enforcement, but at least new tenants would have to sign a statement that they will not be acquiring a dog, and if they do, and management finds out about it, they lose their lease.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

>>Not all of us show such a blatant disregard for the property and our neighbors in general.<<

From what I've seen, I agree.

Anonymous said...

STR, they can put a moratorium on anything they'd like but that's not going to prevent people from getting dogs. They'll use the same excuse they do to get their pitt bulls registered. "Oh, I didn't know" and boom! they're in.

The education needs to start in the leasing office but we know the pretty boys and girls showing apartments would never think of doing such a thing. After all, they want everyone to think this is a utopia. Couldn't be further from the truth.

Anonymous said...

STR, the only thing management is interested in enforcing is egregious rent increases and apartment churning. As for Public Safety (misnomer, if ever there was one) they are too lazy and stupid to enforce their way out of a wet paper bag!

Anonymous said...

Security said they can't keep up with it.

First Security ignored rules enforcement for four years. Now they can't keep up with it. Not enough Security to do vertical patrols either. But we have enough security to guard the illegal farmer's market and the rest of the Oval bread and circuses.

Security is, for the most part, a joke, starting at the top. But this is what you get when your management team wants to make it place where you would be happy to live but not where they live or would be happy to live.

This used to be the one place in the entire city I could walk around without having to fix my eyes in a downward position to avoid piles of doody. So much for that. The nonstop barking from some dogs here is also a nuisance. Some people on the floor below me have dogs that run to the door and bark incessantly as though Kim Jong-Il just got off the elevator when I put trash down the chute or someone rings my (not theirs) doorbell.

Anonymous said...

It could have been worse! This is Rob Speyer we're talking about. Be thankful the place isn't overrun with goats!

Except for one instance, my experience with Public Safety has been positive. They were/are doing a fine job near the Oval Fountain. But either there's not enough of them, or they are not being directed well, because I've yet to see them in other areas of Stuy Town/PCV, where they should also be checking registration and seeing if outsiders are coming in from the other side of 1st Ave with their dogs (which I always see).

Anonymous said...

Again with the goats! :)

Here's another regulation never enforced:

"Help prevent nuisance barking by making sure your dog gets adequate exercise and is trained so that it can be left alone in your apartment. Excessive barking will be considered a nuisance and may be grounds to terminate your Lease by the Landlord.

Pack leaders? None here.

I used to feel that way too. Ironically though, if the place converts you will probably be able to sell it easier than had this place stayed clean. As you can see by the deafening silence of all the dog owners on this blog (with the exception of one: Gracie) people just don't care. Unfortunately, I think it's probably time to throw out the white towel.

Disgusting. Do something that will get some bad press about this. You want to see change? There's nothing CW & Brookfield fear more than bad press that will hurt the big sale. Hit them where they live. They want money. Hit their money. And hit them again and again. The big sale may be years off. If you (we) can show that we can sour the sale with legitimate grievances that get bad press, we have some power.

Serious Question: if you are a rent stabilized tenant whose building, has been turned into a dorm and it seriously affects the quality of your life/tenancy, can you file for a rent reduction? I didn't sign a lease to live in a dorm; I thought I was going to be living in a normal apartment building, but I have frat/sorority kids on all sides.

How lazy must one be not to pick up after their dog. These pictures and tales seem to indicate intentional disregard for the law. Much like the NYPD a security blitz regarding this enforcement would go a long way, word travels fast when it hits you in the wallet.
Not sure about the streams, if you report it, then it's true? Seems to be an exaggeration perhaps, but alas dog owners should practice a bit more discretion. I have a large dog he can at times go relentlessly. With the new temporary fencing in place, his first options are limited, yet still there is ground drains, security car induced ruts, garbage bagged rulings etc., simply put most clue-less dog owners can & should do a better job.
Thank You.

Don't throw out the white towel if you are a "real" RS tenant. That is just exactly what management want you to do. This is why they are harassing us with all this filth, noise and dereliction of maintenance. Unless you have somewhere better and cheaper to go to, or absolutely cannot stand it any longer, just don't let them win. It's the apartment you are paying rent for; the nice grounds used to be an added bonus to living here, but were never guaranteed as part of the deal. Just so long as you make management take care of what is necessary to your immediate surrounds, try to block out the rest of the nonsense.

This blog thread about stained sidewalks is simply the most biased and least balanced reporting by STR on any PCV/ST issue EVER. Hardly worthy of comment by ST-loving, rule-abiding dogowners. Please use your blog pulpit less to polarize neighbors and instead to put pressure on Management to hose down sidewalk stains. Just like they do when someone vomits or litters. Management should clean it up. If one or two knucklehead dogowners leave a smear behind, Management should clean it up. Stop the hate language toward other neighbors. What a waste of time.

How many times does it have to be said that dog pee and poop KILLS grass and plants? It Does NOT fertilize them. Don't believe me? Do some research.

STR, Is there any reason that you're continuing to post messages from the 2 management shills that are trying to incite your readers with their constant "if you don't like it move" postings ? It's obvious that the majority of this blog's readers are fully aware that the problems that exist in ST//PCV are very, very real, and that most of us feel that it's unnecessary for things to change so dramatically from "the way things were". Yes, times change, but civility doesn't, and the right to enjoy a quality of life while paying rent for your apartment is still a valid reason to demand that things be brought up to par. If those that don't agree want to argue, I suggest that they all meet at Cafe Kubrik for chicken fingers and discuss. The rest of us will continue to fight for what is right.

Went to the farmers' market earlier. All the veggies looked as tired and dusty as any in Associated. Plus, I nearly got run down by two bicycles. Security did yell at one of them, but only because he flew into the market area at full speed. Easier to shop and walk off campus.

It's not biased. The photos are there as proof. And a walk around the Oval will show how filthy it is. And, yes, management should clean it up, but how many times a week?

How about you pick up your phone and call Management instead of demanding that someone else do your dirty work for you. It isn't the job of this blog to manage Management. And how about the rules-abiding dog owners getting together to put pressure on those that don't follow the rules so you don't all get a bad name?

Anonymous said...

Yep, it's only one or two dog owners so you're right, management should just clean it up and end of problem. A perfect example of why dogs should never have been allowed. Dog owners themselves make all the arguments against that one needs. Talk about being completely out of touch with reality.

I walk around the Oval several times a day and strongly disagree! The Oval is not filthy. It is lovely. There is a bit of pet residue that Management should hose off, or clean off with their sidewalk scrubber. As for what's on the walkways, let's start a war against gum chewers afterall there's about 1000 times more wads of gum than pet deposits.

I live and walk my dog here. I don't see the extent of the problem you do.

Still there are your photos to consider. Here’s what I think.

I believe people who live here are good people who don't want to step in poop on their strolls, and generally care for and appreciate the beauty of our environment. However, since plenty of non-residents walk dogs here, isn't it more likely that non-residents are to blame for what is depicted in these photos? Why doesn’t Public Safety simply check the incoming dog-walkers at the entrances to the property? Why do they instead check and recheck the same people over and over strolling around the Oval?

It has been reported that “Management” is spending well over $20,000 a month securing “no dog areas” at the Oval Fountain - just to make sure dogs and their owners are not enjoying the view!

In fact, so many patrol vehicles endlessly circle the Oval, it has lead to fewer patrols in PCV and other areas - just go out in the evening and count the patrols in both areas and you will see how unprotected we are because of dog patrols.

I've often heard from neighbors, particularly women, walking home alone late at night, that they immediately felt safer when they saw someone nearby walking their pet.

How ironic for dog haters, if there are 1,000 dog owners in our community, you can be sure that each and every night most are out walking their beloved pets and keeping a watchful eye on our neighbors - rain or sleet... at no cost to the rest of us.

I think everyone agrees that TS created the 'dog problem' but it's up to us - all of us - to solve it. Dogs aren't the
problem, dog owners are. I HATE to generalize, but it seems to me that there are two kinds of dog-owners: responsible and irresponsible. The first group tend to be older, and are, by and large, long-term tenants, the second group tend to be younger and, by and large, short-term tenants. The long-term tenants tend to appreciate their role in a diverse, multi-generational community, and are generally responsible dog owners. Many of the short-term tenants show a lack of sensitivity to their neighbors that leaves me breathless, and this includes their exaggerated sense of entitlement when it comes to their dogs. Dogs are a symptom of the problem, not the cause. Tishman created the problem, and Rose (whose ineptitude is legion) is exacerbating it. BTW: For what it's worth, I walk through the Oval daily, and I've rarely seen dog shit on the walkways. As for this rancorous debate: In all things STPCV, a little Leviticus (love thy neighbour as thyself) would go a long way.

I've seen a number of older tenants who are dog owners, and I mean OLDER, disregard the dog rules. Always surprises me, because one would think they'd know better and were brought up with more respect for property and fellow neighbors.

I wish that were true, but just spend 5 minutes on the oval and you will see 'older' tenants flagrantly disregarding the rules just as much as 'younger' tenants.

Actually stuytown is worse than the rest of the city now. This is due to the concentration of all the dogs in such a small ara.

Anonymous said...

as a new tenant (but 20+ year east village resident) and dog owner (two dogs actually), my boyfriend and i are fastidious about cleaning up after and not allowing them to go on sidewalks. this is relatively easy, and an obviously respectful measure we believe everyone should adhere to. unfortunately stuytown reflects the general disparity in dog ownership in the city overall - some clean up, some occasionally clean up, and some just don't give a sh*t (entitlement). i find dogs to be a friendly presence in stuytown, especially for the elderly. but sadly, some irresponsible owners give the rest of us a "bad name." and just a note, i often see older (longer-term) folks allowing their dogs to go in the gardens, bushes, restricted areas, but honestly, it doesn't really bother me. doesn't seem like a "real" urban problem to me.

Anonymous said...

I am a dog owner and it makes me very angry when people do not pick up after their pets because it makes those of us that follow the rules look bad. I don't know how anyone can not clean up after their dog. And something should be said if you catch someone in the act doing this. Maybe like at some public parks, they should supply bags? Trust me - I think if you have the dog, you should supply your own bags but I'm just trying to offer any solutions.

Out with the old, in with the new. Can't fight it, so you might as well go along with the program right?

That's what many Germans thought in 1933.

You can put your head back in the sand, now. Just watch out for dogs raising their hind legs.

Yes – StuyTown is comparable to Nazi Germany as it was 70 years ago. Get a grip! The Germans viewed canines as being almost as intelligent as humans and attempted to build an army of 'speaking' dogs. Maybe we can get the StuyTown dogs to speak to all the angry commenters?

There are plenty of dirt patches around here and our dog has learned to use them for his pee and poo. He is not allowed to pee on plants or saplings. His poo is always picked up and properly disposed. He is a good Stuytown resident, ask anyone who knows him. He is grateful to live here and brings a small amount of cheer to this world unlike a lot of humans. So many people here hate dogs, I just feel sorry for them.

I love the dogs and I welcome them here and I am a long-term tenant who doesn't have a dog. Having said that, I don't love the dog owners who let their dogs poo anywhere and don't pick up after them. I think they are in minority and they make it bad for the majority of dog owners. I wish they'd have a moratorium on students moving in here! The dogs do bring cheer and happiness; the students bring squalor and noise.

Forget about the dogs.....what can be done about a LOUD upstairs neighbor who seems to stomp, stomp, stomp....drop things...stop?

I've lived here for over 30 years and it's never been a problem until they moved in last December. I don't have 6 roomates to split the rent (like upstairs) so I don't feel I have to put up with this shit.

Through of all of your anti-dog rants in your blog posts , I notice that you are very savvy in who there is to know in PCVST - past and present, and yet never provide a solution. Dog owners are here to stay and while I can admit that some dog owners are irresponsible in picking up their dogs' messes, there are some easy solutions that this village could provide that would make all residents a bit happier. For example, having dog bags available near trash bins. Like so many parks and areas that allow dogs, they always provide those features as a way to keep it clean as well as let the people that frequent these places that the community cares.

Running water is also another option. Albeit an expensive one but a solution all the same.

Residents are finally seeing dog services being offered through PCVST and it should make for a better way of living knowing that they are acknowledging the care required in taking care of a dog.

Perhaps setting an area aside within PCVST for a dog run. This would alleviate a LOT of issues and cut down on messes left in and around the area...

Do you have any other suggestions? Do you plan in taking action to care for your neighborhood? Or would you rather write a blog and complain about it and not be part of the solution?
