Our landlord, BLACKSTONE, can't handle Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. There is a lack of enforcement of certain "rules," and no amount of notice to this alleviates the problems. We are continually being told half-truths and fabrications. And we have no viable Tenants organization, despite our TA asking for dues all the time. So far, the politicians have proven to be basically useless. A typical New York story.
Its so frustrating that everyone was pro DeBlasio and he was going to save Stuy Town, he was going to save housing for middle class. Now everyone is freaking out...what did you expect voting for him??? His agenda was obvious as are his ideals.
I don't understand his ideals. He boycotts the St. Patrick's Day parade because it won't let gays march under their own banner. He sees that as discrimination, even though the parade organizers are within their rights to determine who can or who cannot march under their own banner as it's a quasi religious event.
Strangely, he doesn't seem to have a problem with developers discriminating against "affordable housing" tenants who may occupy certain units in their buildings, by making them use a "poor door."
I don't have any strong feelings one way or the other about the St. Patrick's Day parade, but I tend to think that if the REBNY was sponsoring it and had the same rules as the Ancient Hibernians (or whatever they call themselves), DeBlasio would be marching up front with that goofy grin on his face.
As a progressive, I am pissed off that de Blasio has moved to be a centrist Democrat, the political place where everyone hates you. Regarding the parade, who gives a shit, the Gay Hibernians march in the Dublin parade with their own banner, it’s not an issue there. The NYC parade organizers have the courts behind them, they have the right to exclude who they want, so be it. Speaking of hypocrites, I loved seeing Giuliani, the three times married (first time with his cousin)adulterer, receive communion at major Catholic Church events. And for those who voted for Lhota (and I assume Bloomberg, Pataki, and Giuliani as well), you people are the classic “What’s The Matter With Kansas" crowd, you let your racism and hate blind yourself to your own self-interests when you vote. I know more than few retired PDNY, FDNY and other law enforcement retirees which follow this path, nice to have those fat union retiree contracts which you got from collective bargaining which your beloved party does not believe in. Those past creeps (plus some major help from Peter Vallone and his sidekick at the time, Anthony Weiner) are the reasons why this project has turned into the transient dorm, shithole dump that it now is. With de Blasio, we have a small chance, if Lhota had won, ZERO. You all do realize that you live in a heavily regulated RS housing project. Since the Republican Party believes in NO NYC apartment housing regulations, have the courage of your convictions and move out. And I just got this notice in my Google Rent Alert. It’s a pay for link but the summary free text says it all:
“NYC Developers Claim Rent Control Rules Abuse Due Process” “Law360, New York (February 25, 2014, 4:11 PM ET) -- A group of New York City developers launched a suit in Brooklyn court Monday against the state's Division of Housing and Community Renewal, claiming the agency's new rent stabilization rules are too extreme and its new Tenant Protection Unit violates landlords' due process rights. A slew of new rent stabilization rules quietly went into effect Jan. 8 after more than a year of comments from the industry, but landlords and their attorneys have expressed concerns that the DHCR's final determinations are biased in favor of tenants...” http://www.law360.com/articles/513047/nyc-developers-claim-rent-control-rules-abuse-due-process
de Blasio's "agenda" wasn't obvious to me or I wouldn't have voted for him. I would venture to say that most people who voted for him took him at his word that he wanted to bring change to the Tale of Two Cities. So many of us were sick of Bloomberg and his handing the city over to the wealthy.
People! The Rent Guidelines Board determines how much our rent can go up each year. Don't you want de Blasio to appoint people who have more sympathy for tenants than the last bunch, regardless of how you feel about de Blasio himself? Don't you want to hold him to his promises? So what if you voted for Llota? He's not going to be paying your rent.
Here are some data points about whether it matters if you select a democratic or republican mayor re RBG increases:
- Since RGB established in 1969 (RGB data starts w/ 1970), Democratic major = 24 years ; Republican mayor = 20 years. I exclude the current year since RGB data not yet avail.
For 15 of the 24 years a democrat was mayor, the RGB increase exceeded inflation (63%).
For 12 of the 20 years a republican was mayor, the RGB increase exceeded inflation (60%).
We'll call +/- 3.00% statistically insignificant.
If you made up your mind to vote for de Blasio because as a democrat he'd reduce rent increase burden, history says otherwise.
By mayor: Lindsay RGB>CPI 5 of 8 years Koch RGB>CPI 7 of 12 years Dinkins RGB>CPI 3 of 4 years Giuliani RGB>CPI 4 of 8 years Bloomberg RGB>CPI 8 of 12 years
What a disaster De Blasio will make of things, people wanted the anti-Bloomberg, so they voted in a tall white man. Just goes to show you how bad Christine Quinn had to be.
@1:09 very good Comrade because Lhota knows you are a freeloading communist for accepting the benefits of that State administered Socialist Program known as "Rent Stabilization".
Again, why live in a socialist/heavily government regulated/commie/pinko housing project? Again, conservatives do not believe in ANY RS regulations. Again, have the courage of your convictions and leave. Or do you agree with the late tenure of Met Life, the past tenure of TS, and the current tenure of CWC of PCVST? And FDNY, PDNY unions, aren’t they just socialist fronts as well? After all, REBNY’S vision of this city is trickle-down economics and free market capitalism at its “best”. And Pataki, a Republican Conservative, did the most damage to the NYS RS law. And Lhota's Campaign did skirt racism, how the city would return to the 70’s, Bronx is burning, looting, etc., vision. Yes, in the Fox News/Roger Ailes bubble, white men are now the victims of racism.
Anony 3.36 "For 15 of the 24 years a democrat was mayor, the RGB increase exceeded inflation (63%). For 12 of the 20 years a republican was mayor, the RGB increase exceeded inflation (60%).
How are you party classifying Lindsay and Bloomberg for their terms? And Koch was a conservative Democrat (like Vallone) who was in major denial of his own sexuality while AIDS devastated this city.
Re: postcards. The TA is doing an under-door distribution of bright green postcards that you can send to de Blasio with the message for him to appoint tenant-friendly members to the RGB (he has to appoint 5 out of 9 members very soon).
If your building hasn't received the postcards yet, it's probably because it doesn't have a building volunteer. Perhaps you could volunteer to distribute the postcards in your building--just contact the TA. The postcard also suggests that you send an email directly to the mayor or leave a message on his website (www1.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor). You don't even have to pay for postage. Just drop the postcard (one per person) in one of the TA's off-property drop boxes, and the TA will mail it for you.
If you haven't gotten a green card yet it's because you don't have a TA rep in your building. Every building is supposed to have one to distribute notices and stuff like these postcards to you and your neighbors. Your buildings need one. Why not volunteer yourselves?
Perhaps I could volunteer sliding postcards under the doors of apartments filled with college students who dont give a shit? Really? That's the best you got?
Another example of how utterly clueless the TA is. It's not 1920 anymore people.
This is the problem with the TA and their volunteers, when people ask questions about things like postcards, it's OUR fault for not being a volunteer. In 2014, why are you sliding postcards under a door? Did you ever stop and think that this organization is so out of touch with present day society that maybe, just maybe, that's the reason more people don't get involved? Or is that our fault too for not bringing them ideas.
One last thing worth noting. The comment that started the postcard discussion says one in ten people turned in their postcard. Is this a member of the TA? A volunteer? Who has access to this data and why is it being posted anonymously online? THIS is the reason people don't want to get involved physically or financially.
STR I was referring to the postcard data in the comments. The TA, or someone close to them, can use your diet to spread this information but you can't be on their Facebook page? Hypocrites.
"The comment that started the postcard discussion says one in ten people turned in their postcard. Is this a member of the TA? A volunteer? Who has access to this data and why is it being posted anonymously online? THIS is the reason people don't want to get involved physically or financially."
The person who claimed that only 1 in 10 people have turned in their postcard is just making numbers up. The people who actually know how many postcards have been turned in would not be posting those figures here or anywhere. Don't believe everything you read here.
There is an online petition on the TA website which is sponsored by Change.Org. The green postcards are necessary because some of the older folks still are not on the internet and some of the newer tenants are not aware of the TA. Having said that, I left a message with my building TA rep volunteering to assist with distributing the green cards, but I didn't get a call back.
Someone connected to the TA posts updates on the TA page on the number of signed postcards turned in for delivery. It's currently around 1100 postcards which works out to about 1 in 10 apts. Geez, paranoid much?
In addition to seniors w/o internet connections, not everyone who is connected wants to sign online petitions and have their personal info put out on the internet. So there are good reasons for the postcards.
The TA forbids sock puppets do they? They allow plenty of their friends to have sock puppet accounts and steer conversation.>>>
I don't think that is true. I see people posting there who have genuine complaints about the way they are being abused by CW. I think they are real individual tenants, not sock puppets. You can only have one facebook account and, if you check them, they are real people who live in the complex.
"Someone connected to the TA posts updates on the TA page on the number of signed postcards turned in for delivery. It's currently around 1100 postcards which works out to about 1 in 10 apts. Geez, paranoid much?"
WRONG. Those are the number of signatures on the Change.org petition, not the number of signed postcards turned in for delivery. Learn to read.
I heard there's a class action lawsuit in the works against the TA for pushing tenants towards the Roberts Case. Does anyone have any info on this? I quit the the TA last year because I've found them to move too slow and focus on the wrong things like their condo/coop pipe dream.
If John Marsh knew what he was doing, he'd know that you can make anyone an admin on the Facebook page. Meaning, 6 people wouldn't have to share a sock account, they could moderate using their real accounts. But then we'd know who we were talking to and they couldn't hide behind their sock.
"In 2014, why are you sliding postcards under a door?"
Because that's the only way to be sure of reaching every tenant (providing that enough people bestir themselves to distribute them). The TA also sent out an eblast, alerting those who've asked to be on the email list about the postcards, recommending that they spread the word to friends about the online petition and emailing de Blasio (three of my coop-owning friends signed the petition), and linking to a post on the TA site. Is that up-to-date enough for you? As the old expression goes, "What are you waiting for--an engraved invitation?"
I am on the TA email list, but I didn't get an email. Didn't get a card undery door although my neighbors did. I have volunteered to distribute stuff in my building on several occasions, but never heard back. Btw, your familiar refrain is wearing thin. Nobody loves a scold, Ms 9:56 pm.
Regarding the TA Facebook page, there used to be a bunch of really vicious, nasty-assed cyber bullies who constantly mocked and insulted other posters and drove a lot of them away. Eventually, the bullies were banned (though one of their camp followers lingers as a chronic, compulsive hall monitor), but the damage was already done. People were afraid to post on that page for fear of being ripped apart and I think the reputation of that forum was damaged forever because the sadistic attacks were merely for the "pleasure" of being hateful and bigoted.

What?! The TA is giving out green cards now??? When did this happen? I swear, sometimes I want to lock myself in a closet.

Well, I'm the one posting any TA data here.
STR I was referring to the postcard data in the comments. The TA, or someone close to them, can use your diet to spread this information but you can't be on their Facebook page? Hypocrites.
I prefer to get all of my Tenant Association messages through telegraph.
How about a town crier riding a horse through the oval shouting "the post cards are coming! The post cards are coming!"
I prefer to get my TA news through a tin can with string.

I won't names names but I know for a fact there are sock puppets on the TA page.
There's always someone connected to the TA isn't there.
"you can only have one Facebook account"
A requirement that's impossible to determine.
You can have multiple Facebook accounts, as long as you use different email addresses, log-ins, names.

So who are the sock puppets? Give a hint. They all look quite legit to me. I know Peter Stuyvesant is many people, but aren't they the moderators?
If John Marsh knew what he was doing, he'd know that you can make anyone an admin on the Facebook page. Meaning, 6 people wouldn't have to share a sock account, they could moderate using their real accounts. But then we'd know who we were talking to and they couldn't hide behind their sock.
I'm not going to reveal anyone because this isn't about them personally, but they know who they are and John Marsh knows who they are.
