Our landlord, BLACKSTONE, can't handle Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. There is a lack of enforcement of certain "rules," and no amount of notice to this alleviates the problems. We are continually being told half-truths and fabrications. And we have no viable Tenants organization, despite our TA asking for dues all the time. So far, the politicians have proven to be basically useless. A typical New York story.

ST/PCV Hot Weather Precautions
Click on notice to get larger view.
With temperatures nearing 100 in the next three days (Friday could be the worst), stay-at-home residents without air-conditioning who may be affected by the weather should note that the air-conditioned Community Center off the 14 St Loop, by First Avenue [449 East 14th St], will be open from 10am to, probably, 10pm, if the above notice is accurate.
While this is a positive and thankful use of the Center, the center itself is small and almost at the corner end of the ST/PCV complex. I wonder if management has ever considered opening up the Oval "Essentials" to non-members during such times of an intense heat wave. Oval Lounge and Oval Film are particularly underused during the day and very frequently empty, except for a lone American Leisure staff member.

Helpful hints from management!
What they say:
“To be prepared in the event of a blackout, have flashlights and a battery powered radio on hand.”
What they mean:
"It's not clear that we're going to be able to pay the ConEd bill this month. If you want to be sure you can read your copy of T&V this week, you might want to stuff some Everreadies into the old camp lantern! And keep those sneakers ready. No backup power for the elevators, either..."
What they say:
“To conserve energy during “heat waves,” please unplug any non-essential electrical items in your apartment.”
What they mean:
"Do you REALLY need that oxygen machine?!? I mean...REAllY?!? There's air everywhere and we're still losing a cool fifteen mil a month on this place...give us a break and just open the window."
My apologies to management. I corrected the punctuation in your flyer so, perhaps, I should not have used quotes...but I did anyway.
I think it would be great if management could open up some of the Oval "Amenities" and let the seniors without a/c spend some time in there. Manny could entertain them. I'm sure he would be very good at organizing a sing-along-to-the-oldies. He'd also get a good game of bingo going and would be a real tonic for the alter kockers!
Passed by Oval Study not too long ago. No one inside and the American Leisure person was sitting outside. The AC must have konked out.
Do the oval atrocities have ac? There's been a machine with vents at oval lounge on and off the past week. Or is it a bed bug fumer?
LOL. All of them do have AC, but the heat may be getting to them.
Are they shutting it off in compliance with their OWN power reduction campaign? Saunter over there this afternoon and snap a pic of the big windows fogged from excessive indoor cooling...
I liked their other notice for rent stabilized seniors telling them to unplug their air conditioner, exercise excessively in the sun and drink nothing but gin.
Coming soon:
Oval Gin
I don't know about the rest of you but I, for one, will be there for the free trial period...
I keep my air conditioner set at 78 degrees (not 72 degrees as advised by Management) and find my apartment is very comfortable a that level. Just because it's hot outside doesn't mean we have to be refrigerated indoors!
Mine are set at 68. Man, is it cold in here. Gotta go put a sweater on!
As the compressor in my bedroom A/C kicks in, I notice the lights dim slightly across the river in LIC and wonder if Mr. Rose feels a slight twinge in his wallet...
I have mine set at 60, I only have one bedroom and it has to cool the entire apartment...
60, eh? I'll consider lowering mine.
Say, you look awfully familiar, Marty...
