If you shop at Associated on 14th Street and wish it to survive, please make sure to sign the petition at Associated. There's also an online petition at:
https://www.change.org/p/blackstone-group-tell-blackstone-we-need-to-save-our-associated-supermarket?recruiter=422425722&utm_source=share_for_starters&utm_medium=copyLink
If Associated disappears, residents who live nearby will not have an affordable supermarket ever!

Associated is the worst! It's a mess, the food is overpriced, the service is bad, and produce quality is terrible! And get this: they're only paying $10k a month in rent. They must be making a ton of money! You think they'd be able to use some of that cash to lower prices or improve their service.
Said the 10 29 am troll who works for CR.
Another troll for removing Associated! Sorry, but what you write is WRONG. Since it's so incorrect, I'm going to stop these trolling posts and not pass them again. Sorry, but if you think the food is overpriced, you must not be buying your food in the city. Better yet, go to Gracefully, and buy your food there. (Not a slam against Gracefully, as I like the store, but their items are clearly higher priced than Associated.)
Try Gristedes. Everything is at least 30% more expensive than Associated.
And...it smells funny.
You should remove that str. Total bs. They're not paying 10k a month.
A troll is person whose sole purpose in life is to seek out people to argue with on the internet over extremely trivial issues. If a person wants to express their feelings on a particular topic, then they should be allowed to, and respected. It is not for you to decide what is trivial and what is not.
As the rock group, The Kinks, said, Paranoia will destroy you. I think it was the Kinks.
>>You should remove that str. Total bs. They're not paying 10k a month.<<
Duly noted. Since I consider that poster either a troll or a very uninformed tenant, I'd prefer the comment to stand as an example, particularly as we've already responded to the post.
>>If a person wants to express their feelings on a particular topic, then they should be allowed to, and respected. It is not for you to decide what is trivial and what is not.<<
I hate to break it to you, but it is PRECISELY for me to decide such matters. You see... it's my blog.
BTW, I'm already not passing a number of comments that state obvious untruths about Associated. Better luck elsewhere.
Associated is the best priced supermarket in the neighborhood. Gristedes is so overpriced that it ought to be criminal. Their prices are genuinely obscene. True, however, if one shops in queens they can do better than associated (as I do).
The trolls are out in full force STR. Beware.
Same paid P.R. trolls that trashed Ess-a-Bagel for being dirty, expensive, surly employees, etc.
Great post from the EV Grieve blog re this issue:
"I shop at the Associated. It's not perfect, but it is convenient. I signed the petition, but let's be honest here-- petitioning landlords to do the right thing is futile. If we want change, we need legislation. The SMALL BUSINESS JOBS SURVIVAL ACT would save this grocery store by allowing a right to a lease renewal (something residential tenants have, but commercial tenants do not) The majority of City Council supports this bill. All Manhattan Council Members support this bill, except... Drum roll.... Dan Garodnick, recipient of about $300k from REBNY last election. If you want to really save the Associated, call Garodnick and ask him why he won't support the SBJSA that would save the Associated? 212-818-0580"
I don't think these are all trolls, but people who are telling the real truth, and a lot of you liberals don't want to hear it.
FACT:
ESS-A-BAGEL was given a restaurant letter grade 'B" by The Dept. of Health.
Everyone, stop with this troll nonsense, please!

What does being a liberal or a conservative have to do with Associated?
>>ESS-A-BAGEL was given a restaurant letter grade 'B" by The Dept. of Health.<<
A lot of places are given that grade. I eat at some.

Worth repeating. Steinberg's petition makes it look like she is dong something when she should have been calling out her BFF Dan. Thank you November 11, 2015 at 7:24 AM. Whether this is another of the Dan PCVST TA tricks to make it look like they effected change to an already predetermined outcome or if it is a futile effort - either way we are sick and tired of having our time wasted by the games they play and pr they spin.
Well, STR, you can continue to eat at these places, not me:
ESS-A-BAGEL
359 1 AVENUE MANHATTAN 10010

1) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.
2) Sanitized equipment or utensil, including in-use food dispensing utensil, improperly used or stored.
3) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.

6) Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained and/or not properly sealed, raised, spaced or movable to allow accessibility for cleaning on all sides, above and underneath the unit.
I for one, will not eat at an establishment unless it has a grade of an "A".
Anything less, your are asking for trouble. Trust me.
Gristedes will be the next one to go. Their prices are absurd. Never crowded in there. Gee, I wonder why?
I for one am happy to hear the fake or ahem bad comment about Essa. Much too crowded and more room for us. Stay away little troll.

So...those were NOT poppy seeds on that bagel I once bought there?

I agree, and kind of wonder how it has lasted this long to begin with. If you look at Gristedes, there is nothing above it, which makes me think that someone would love to develop that lot. I am actually surprised it hasn't already been developed.
Nothing fake about November 11, 2015 at 10:33 AM'S accurate comment.
It is a valid statement. Oh, that must have come from that damm troll again.
STR- TY for keeping up your sense of humor. You were most likely OK.
Just have to be very careful where you go. That's all.
Hell yeah, Gristedes is on its last leg. That lease is almost up and they'll build up on it. NO more supermarkets for stuytowns 24,000 residents.
November 11, 2015 at 4:27 PM
Exactly.
there is always c town on ave d the prices are better than associated and it is a BIG store
just saying
The poorer the neighborhood, the lower the prices. The richer the neighborhood, the more expensive. Thanks, but it's not worth the risk going down there. And I'm sure they are not paying a cheap rent either!
I'm 86 and in Pc. I can't walk or bike it over to ave d.
Gristedes is owned by a multi billionaire. Enough said.
Just like playing Monopoly, except with real peoples lives. He could care less.
I wonder if it was D'Agostino's who was offering more for Associated's space. For decades, they had a very profitable store in Stuy Town on 20th Street before they were given the boot to make room for Oval Fitness.
Since there is much less demand for garage space nowadays, I wonder if some of that space could be converted into retail. There are two huge garages on Avenue C, and it's a long, long walk to either Associated or Gristedes (though C-Town in Haven Plaza is pretty good). A supermarket on the east end of Stuy Town would be a godsend.
I am surprised that nobody talks about Fresh Direct or Peapod. Personally, I use Fresh Direct because it is comparable in price to our neighborhood stores and the products are superior (in my opinion).
As for the Associated space, I have no idea what might end up there. Trader Joe's - NO (they are not going to open another store that is 2 avenues away). Fairway - NO (rumors are that they are looking at the space in the new building on 14th and A). Whole Foods???
I think that Blackstone will look for a high-end client for that space. I don't think Associated fits that billing...
if they had any brainpower, they'd get rid of the ever money losing pit of stuy fitness and put something else there.
Fresh Direct is ver $ and charges for delivery and quite frankly i hate them - they are perpetually 3 hours late to me.

And a perfect getaway for thieves via FDR!
Going, going, gone.......................
From Take Back NYC on Facebook: (Dan G is incredible to take credit for this!)
My grocery store is being denied a new lease. I have begun notifying my network of Stuy Town people to call CM Garodnick to ask why he is the only Manhattan CM not on SBJSA. He is on big time damage control, he sent this reply to all who have inquired:
Dear Neighbor:
There has been a lot of concern about the possibility of losing our supermarket on East 14th Street. I just wanted to share that after advocacy from my office and the Tenants Association, Blackstone has agreed to keep a supermarket at that location, at the same affordable price point.
You can read the article here.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Um.. is this guy SERIOUS? First of all he is missing the point the community wants the Associated its affordable. 2nd, are we really supposed to trust a NYC landlord's "promise"???
I know its late Friday, but please send this tweet:
.@NoahHurowitz a "promise" from a landlord LOL @DanGarodnick should join EVERY MNHTN CM &MAJORITY of CC &sponsor #SBJSA "promise"=irrelevent
Of course Dan is on damage control. The gig is up on him and his phony group of TA members, but unfortunately they have sold out to the REBNY, which means more to their wallets then we do!
