Dog Owners Do Have a Dog Run -- All of Stuy Town and Peter Cooper!

We received these photos from a reader of this blog, taken the other day. We didn't need the accompanying text, as it's easy to see what these photos relate....

Let's see.... 3 dogs. A dog off leash, and another at the end of a retractable leash that's longer than 6 feet.

Pretty soon, two of these dogs are playing in the garden area of the Oval.

Scampering, trampling....

Hm, tasty! Perhaps a little pee-pee will make these grow a bit more?

Ah, a fourth Fido joins his friends!

The garden area was never meant to be an ad-hoc dog run. Many of the plantings are sensitive to canine intrusion and urine. There is NO debate on this. By the rules of Stuyvesant Town, known to Stuy Town tenants, dogs are NOT allowed in the grass or garden areas of this complex. Period.

But wasn't it just wonderful seeing those cute little things play!

Doesn't it just make ya wanna buy a co-op or condo here and pay your share of the upkeep of the "gardens?"

One of those women is easily identifiable as my neighbor. Wait until something happens to her and she sues you for publishing photos of her online. Shame on you!

Is she obeying the dog rules?

Anon #2 - Don't get melodramatic. Nothing is going to happen to your neighbor. Just ask her, whoever she is, to please obey the dog rules. Thanks. :-)

You should also take pictures of the Kids and some transients that ruin the garden don't just blame dogs. Dogs are always the easiest to blame.

This is going to be a problem for quite a while. It's going to be up to the new management team to reverse the tide of inaction on this issue and step up the enforcement.

I can't imagine the tempers that will be inflamed if people actually make equity investments in the property, only to see it literally pissed and crapped on.

The war that is going to happen in forming co-op boards will be messy, and will be severely complicated by the fact that we will have a mixed community of owners and stabilized renters, who wouldn't have been a problem in the past, but for the fact that dogs are now allowed and they have certain rights to keep them.

As long as stabilization is in effect, it will be impossible to rid ST/PCV of this horrible problem, and as the first poster said, it will be a big financial burden for those paying co-op maintenance.

Thanks to Rob Speyer for destroying what was a pristine NYC neighborhood.

I hope we NEVER go co-op.

It's a shame that Security does not enforce any of the leash laws and that some dog owners ignore the leash laws. It would be helpful if people could remind others that dogs are supposed to be on leashes. You can also call 311 and complain that leash laws are not enforced.

Security cannot enforce leash laws. It is the job of the NYPD. What I would like to know is "Where has the 13th precint and the NYPD been for the past couple of years?"
If you want to blame someone for this mess it is the 13th precint who refuses to come into ST/PCV because we already have "security". FYI, they are now called public safety now.
I am asking Bloomberg for a share of my city taxes back. Really. I know I won't get it, but hopefully by asking he will find out why the 13th precint has abandoned the most populous part of the precint and why they don't count the hundreds of quality of life crimes committed here on a daily basis in their crime statistics. The NYPD needs to start issuing tickets in ST/PCV or this will get much worse. Outsiders bring their dogs in here specifically to crap, and then they walk out leaving the present behind. They do it right in front of the security cameras and still nothing happens. It's disgraceful. Maybe we need a class action lawsuit against Tishman Speyer and the city of NY, to get some action. Any thoughts?

Since there's going to be an administration change soon in ST/PCV, probably the best bet at this point is for tenants to insist to the new owner that the dog rules must be obeyed and that security has to be out to enforce these rules. It would be nice if the Tenants Association got involved with this, but it seems to be AWOL on quality of life issues and concentrating on the great Condo or Co-op in its dreams.

If nothing positive does happen with the new administration regarding these quality of life issues, then we have to annoy the 13th precinct to have patrols here, as our security, so far, as not been up to handling these problems, much to its sham and our annoyance.

I suspect that the 13th Precinct is paid off in some form or another to stay away from PCVST. After all, TS is a friend of Bloomforlife and he buys anything and anybody he wants. He could be protecting his avaricious pals by telling the 13th Pct to lay off, just like TS told the "Security" dept. to lay off when it comes to dog and other quality of life issues.

To illustrate just how bad this problem has become, as I passed the Avenue A flagpole a woman led her rather large dog onto the lower step and allowed the dog to urinate on top of the granite base where people sit.

I was speechless.

Yesterday, if you were at the Oval grass grounds, you may have seen three large size dog turds laying right there, near one of the female sunbathers. (How she could lay there is beyond me, but those are the kind of students we have.) The flies were buzzing all over the turds, at least alerting those who may have walked into the turds. Now, at night, it probably was a different situation.

One who publicizes a matter concerning the private life of another is subject to liability for invasion of privacy. I am one of the women in the photographs you have published here. I also happen to be an attorney who is well aware that under New York state law, one is required to obtain a release from any person that is both identifiable and the focus of the photograph. My neighbor and I are the focus of at least one, arguably two of the photographs that you published, and neither of us provided you with a written release to publish these photographs of us.

It is also required to obtain written permission from the owner of personal property that may be easily identifiable to their person, such as their clothing or jewelry (pets?), prior to publishing photographs of that person's property in a public forum. In these photographs, personal property that make my neighbor and me easily identifiable is pictured.

This morning, I filed a complaint with both Stuyvesant Town security and the NYPD, who are now tracing the IP address and will be contacting you. I will be filing a suit, as the harassment you are causing for dog-owners has now crossed the line of legality.

I don't know why you want to call attention to yourself when everyone has forgotten about you.

Please be aware that I did you a favor by not placing online the more damning photos which completely contradict your excuses in your initial messages to me (one of which contained a physical threat). These photos, untouched, I will gladly show the police or security or anyone else.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

BTW, I am not causing harassment of dog owners. Merely underlining, with text and photos, how they disobey not only the rules of this property, but the rules of the city.

You are blaming dog-owners, and rallying your readers to blame dog-owners for a problem that was created entirely by Tischman Speyer. TS lured dog-owners or prospective dog-owners such as myself to Stuy-town by changing the pet policy and promising the amnenity of a dog-run in 2006. This never happened and now the gray area remains. Dog owners are not responsible for that gray area.

Anonymous said...

Too bad for all you dog haters, but security has been instructed not to bother the dog owners who choose to walk their dogs on the weed grass. So its time to get used to it or move!

Pure BS. There is no gray area. There are laws in NYC that regulate leashes and where your dog does his business. Maybe TS lied to you about a dog run, welcome to the party. TS lied about everything. However, TS never told dog owners they no longer had to obey NYC law. Your dog must be on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet at all times. The dog owners in ST/PCV do not abide by this law. Dogs are supposed to be curbed when they do their business, yet everyday I see both dogs on the leash and off the being walked by their irresponsible owners up on the playground level where there are no curbs. These acts are all illegal and it is the dog owners not TS who have brought the wrath of the majority of the tenants and thus the reason for the comments on this site. STR is possibly the only forum to discuss this.
However, that being said, I am a firm supporter of a class action lawsuit against TS for ruining this once great neighborhood with among other things the awful decision to allow dogs into ST/PCV.We, the tenants of ST/PCV need new representation since the current tenants association and Dan Garodnick are totally inept.

This is exactly why this issue needs to be addressed by the NYPD!

Ha! "the wrath of the majority of the tenants"?

Sorry folks - you aren't even close to being the majority. I understand that must be frustrating.

Instead of harping on this why don't you spend some time trying to improve the quality of your lives with constructive thinking? For instance, consider the lady in my building who disturbs everyone's peace daily by screaming "No DOGS!" out the window - is she really making an attempt to solve the problem? Or is she just creating even more of a disturbance and and most likely enjoying having something on which to focus your negative energy? People such as this lady would probably be better served if they spent that time doing something positive for themselves or others, rather than just relishing the opportunity to complain.
