Armed Thefts in ST/PCV Expose Security Faults

The story is here:

Those of us interested in security in our complex have known for a while that the high-tech security monitors over at the Management Office are fairly worthless in stopping or deterring crime. Boots on the ground, fellas. That means security walking the beat of ST/PCV. It's good exercise and may just lead criminals to believe there is a security presence here.

What works best is an integration of "boots on the ground" with state-of-the-art technology. Cost will always be a factor, but in a community like ST/PCV, where the NYPD does not patrol, something obviously has to be done to ramp up our security.

Fixed posts and patrols do work. One of the operative tenets of security is visibility - make the bad guy choose to go somewhere else.

So how are they supposed to watch Spongebob and zone their cameras in on girls' thighs and boobs if they have to leave the Management Office and patrol the property on foot? Be reasonable!

But Stuy Town Reporter, walking a beat would require the security guys to actually have to stand up. They HATE that!

Question - do we know if the muggings were witnessed lives by the security officers? or is there just footage of it to which they responded (swiftly) the next day?

funny also how, that time I forgot to put my hazard lights on and took 2 minutes to run into the building to grab something I'd forgotten, those security guys were ON it - like magic, a parking ticket!

Anon 2, now you're on to something! If security was instructed to TICKET the muggers, we'd be living in a utopia!

I don't know, Double Parked. Security is supposed to issue tickets for dogs off leashes and crapping everywhere. Not one ticket has been written to date.

Cameras are most useful as a deterent (if the criminals are smart enough to take note that they are there) and after the fact in helping to hunt down and prosecute.
They are just one component of a more comprehensive security strategy which certainly exists here in ST/PCV. Mobile patrols and fixed post security are highly visible throughout the community.
The biggest problem I see is the willingness of residents to let people into the buildings without using an access card or being buzzed in by a tenant. Also, quite often, at least here in PCV, the lower level doors are chocked open by residents or delivery people.
Bottom line - if we want to be safe we ALL have to work at it.

In defense of our public safety department, it's not that they are lazy. Management has cut back so far on staff that there are fewer of them to go around and in some cases they are doing double duty by attending to maintenance problems in the name of security. Rather than slamming security, we should be pushing management--whoever that may be now--to get their priorities straight. We don't need holiday decorations, we want safe and clean property.

Security couldn't catch this suspect who mugged women, yet security runs over and tells people to take their dogs off the grass or else they'll receive a summons. That's bologna!!!
