Stuyvesant Town Welcomes the First Day of Spring

These photos around the Oval area were taken a little before 11am. Yeah, some of the people who live (and visit) here are pigs. But where are the grounds-keeping and maintenance crews? Sleeping? Where are the promised foot-patrol security officers who would have easily spotted that broken wine bottle hours ago, blocked off the spot, and called someone to remove the pieces of glass? As for the pathetic condition of the Oval and environs, the photos speak for themselves.

As usual I'm so proud to live here!

The pics are sad commentary indeed. I need to add the children's playgrounds that we frequent #'s 12 & 8 have not been swept out since last year. The garbage and leaves have been accumulating in the corners of the playgrounds for months. I can recall the daily hand sweeping of the playgrounds back when ST was a nice place to live,,

Why aren't those hideous Speyer creatures in Jail?

The grounds are as ugly as Rob Speyer's freakish face. Whenever I see ugliness and destruction and failure I will think of Rob Speyer. What a legacy!

The pressure should be put on the tenants who leave banana peels, broken wine bottles and coffee cups all over the place. Can you imagine how dirty their apartments must be?

I am surprised that you did not blame the above on the dogs. I have said this from the begining, we do not have a dog problem, we have a people problem. And you just can't blame the new tenants.

Actually, not that far away from the Oval there was the remnant of a dried dog turd lying on one of the walkways near the basketball playground.

I blame the biggest turds of them all: Rob and Jerry Speyer (freakshow father and son) and NYU which dumps its rotten, undisciplined "students" on us. If these "students" are the future of America, we are sunk.

You know, I can't blame all the students or even a sizeable portion of them. We have a lot of well-behaved students here who treat the complex and the residents with respect. Of course there are narcissistic ones who don't give a damn about anyone but themselves and who treat the property as a dumping ground. I wouldn't put it passed some of our other residents, the long-term ones, to throw garbage around the property. The problem is that we, as a whole community, have lost the concern about this place that was here before Tishman Speyer decended on us. And, of course, the maintenance of the complex has lessened, too.

I think that some of the long-time tenants are totally disheartened and have given up. I am sick of taking garbage dumped outside the recycling room door and putting it in the appropriate recycling bins (though a lot of it is not recycleable, anyway unless the City is now recycling left over food). I am sick of picking up bottles and cans tossed in the grounds and putting them in the bins. I'm sick of having to clean the washing and drying machines and the folding table before I can use them. I don't contribute to the litter and filth, but I now try to just ignore it. We are now living in a seedy, rundown slum, but for some of us it is home and we have no intention of moving out unless absolutely forced to do so by the expiration of the rent stabilization laws. I love my apartment which has been my home for over thirty years and I just try to block out the filth and neglect that has taken over Stuyvesant Town under the regimes of TS and Rose. I don't think the latter is any better than the former. Just bloodsucking sharks, both of them and no doubt the next landlord/management company will be just as bad, if not worse. On that cheerful note, I wish you a very good day and please keep up your excellent blog!

Did you pick up these items when you were through photographing them? Or did you leave them on the ground like every other do-nothing complainer on these blogs?

Stuy Town Reporter said...

I left them for you to pick up. And the dog turds.

"I left them for you to pick up. And the dog turds."

Wow! I bet Rose has a job for you too! You'd fit right in!

I walked through PCV several this week and it is sad how much of what used to be lush grass and flowers is now barren dirt and mounds of wood chips from the guys removing tree branches. It is as if the dust bowl of the 1930s has hit PCV
We should file a rent reduction application with the DHCR!

I have given passing thought to cleaning up a bit after other people's mess (and have picked up on occasion annoying trash), but then that's not what we pay rent for--is it? There are people who get a paycheck for doing that around here.

As for Rose hiring me, the job I would love would be to hand out summonses to disregardful dog owners. I'd probably win an award for the number of summonses I'd hand out because I'd be out before 9 am, not after.

I give up in terms of the thoughtless dog owners! Tonight two dog owners were letting their dogs urinate in the garden beds and had them on the illegal extended leashes. I mentioned -- thoughtfully I thought (not confrontational -- that the leashes were not allowed. I didn't even mention the garden bed as toilet issue. In return I got some very big F you's. This happened near the security booth on the Oval so I told the security guard about it. A woman dropping off her rent -- who also had a large dog (over the weight limit?) on an extended leash -- told me I was wrong and the leashes were legal. I mentioned the notice everyone got stating the rules for dogs. She said her building (7 Oval) never got the notice and I was wrong. Meanwhile, the other people continued to curse at me and, I must admit, I lowered myself to dropping the F bomb myself.

From now on, I shut up -- even though Rose suggested that fellow residents remind people of the rules. It is up to the management to enforce the rules, which exist for good reasons. I'll just do the best I can to dodge the dog pee and poop -- and dogs who might take a disliking to something while they're more than six feet from their owner.

What was that about Adam Rose stepping up to the plate? Plate of food maybe, but not the plate we had in mind. PCVST gets worse as far as filth and garbage is concerned, the students party on and their floors remain uncarpeted. Puke and dog shit is the main "decor" of this project-like dump.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

I've seen some improvement in security being around and, apparently, watchful for dog rule transgressions, but at the same time, I seen security ignore dog transgressions right before their eyes! I guess it depends on the security person. Which is not a good thing.

I happened to be crossing over playground 1 in Stuy Town the other day at the exact moment that 3 young ladies decided to let their dogs have the run of the playground. Off the leashes the dogs romped and barked as the 3 clueless narcissists chatted not to each other but to their cell phones totally ignorant to any one else. With that a security vehicle pulls up, so I decide to watch. After about 5 minutes of flirting the young ladies took their dogs and left. No ticket, no warning, just some flirting and off they go. The next day the same 3 were running their dogs off the leash on the lawn in the back of the playground until finally some little league players started to play catch on the lawn and the girls dogs were causing havoc so finally a parent asked them to leave. So much for Rose ASSociates stepping up to the plate!

Any evidence of landscaping work in ST yet? Very little has been done in PCV except for the removal of some trees and branches of trees

Re: the last comments. Yes, it is discouraging that matters are not getting serious yet.

Rose Associates has NO intention whatsoever of improving the quality of life here. They want the RS tenants out (not that they are going to succeed with that one) and they want to pad the bottom line by renting to students and yunnies who don't give a crap about the property because they won't be here for very long. Rose is just another version of Tishman Speyer, the vermin who trashed the property and walked away from it.

Anonymous said...

To refer to Tishman Speyer as vermin is very, very insulting IMO. Vermin deserve more respect than that.

As a rent stabilzed tenant I can tell CW and Rose and anyone else who cares, I'm not going anywhere. If you want to try to get me out by making it insufferable, please note, I will not leave I will sue you. I will sue CW, Rose and the individual tenant(s) that are causing the problems. I let CW and Rose know that I and others have been keeping logs of when we couldn't sleep because of the dogs running free at all hours of the morning and night and they addressed that issue right before we sought class action status. The suit hasn't been filed but it hasn't been shelved either. I think Rose gets it, not sure about CW but since they pay Rose they must approve of stopping the scofflaws rather than facing multiple lawsuits up to and including a class action!
