Battle of the Mellow Bands... and Security Still Not Catching Dog Violations

Yesterday's "Battle of the Bands" at the Oval turned out to be a mellow affair, thankfully. No intrusive and noisy soundchecks that start two hours before an event, too. [I posted this before reading Lux Living's Facebook. It seems that some residents did complain about the noise level of the soundchecks. Adam Rose and Security Chief McClellan were, however, monitoring the sound levels and that seems to have worked. I certainly didn't hear anything excessive during the times I was at the Oval, before and during the event.] However, there wasn't much interest on the part of Stuy Town/PCV residents and Lower East Side residents who come here on the weekend. Crowds were very small, perhaps numbering 200 or so, with most already there earlier for picnics, sunbathing, etc.

Passing by the Stuyvesant Town rental office, one couldn't help notice that the crowds were there--packs of young folks with their daddies or mommies guaranteeing financial backing. A placard was placed inside the office promoting the Summer on the Oval events. So that's about the best giveaway that these events are meant to draw in prospective renters.

Meanwhile, bunches of these crowds head for the tour of a Stuy Town apartment and grounds....

And as they exit the back of the rental office, they are meet with beauty indeed....

A Garden of Eden, though, truthfully, the further you get away from 1st Avenue, the less of Eden you see.

Ah, but what do we have here, in back of the 400s of 14th St....

People sunbathing on the grounds (I guess, okay) and a Fido with them on the grass (okay? or not okay?). Well, certainly okay if one judges that a security guard (safety officer) passed by and didn't say a word.

You also may have noticed new dog signs around the complex about areas being not "designated" for dogs. Does this mean that other areas, grass areas, are designated for dogs? Why the new signs?

And, please, despite that lone security officer walking in the back of these buildings, the presence of walking security guards at all back areas of ST/PCV, with any regularity, is sorely lacking. I know I can't be just a magnet for seeing multiple dog violations when I step pass through areas of ST/PCV for just five minutes. The dog rule violators are still winning.

The bands in the oval were wonderful. It was an excellent way for me to feel like part of the community here by meeting and interacting with some of my new neighbors having just moved here. While I was on my blanket some of my new friends told me of some amazing complaints on a blog about Stuyvesant Town about the bands even before they started playing. Must have been joking where they were talking about one tenant who must have one foot already in the grave concerned about there Saturday nap. What a joker - on such a beautiful day the most important thing is their nap!

Oh well, to each their own - looking forward to more events like the bands!

Even if they don't have enough "boots on the ground" aren't there still dozens of spy cams?

Just look at your monitors security guys! Then send a security officer to attend to the violation. This isn't rocket science.

Rose Associates is spending so much time and mony "recruiting" these college kids they have totally abandoned regular maintenance. Here's a good example. I come home on Thursday night via the main entrance of my building at about 11:30 PM. (My building is right off 1st Avenue). I am greeted by a college kid from an apartment on the main floor passed out drunk on the stoop. I try to wake him but he's out for the count. So I get to my apartment and I see he is still there only now he is puking violently all over the steps. So, I call security to see if they can get him up and get someone to clean the puke. By the time security gets there (4 security guards show up) the "puker" is already gone back into his apartment. So the security guards leave. About a half hour later I call to see if anyone was going to clean up after the new ST/PCV recruits they are stuffing in here. Person who answers says someone will get to it. Mind you this puke was all over the stairs leading into the building, a slip and fall waiting to happen. So in their infinite wisdom Rose Associates has not sent anyone to clean up this mess as of yet. It is now Monday at almost noon. The rain has washed some of it away but much remains, almost 4 full days later, what a disgrace!

Anyone notice the person selling their junk flea-market style on a bench outside of playground 12? Is the flea market back?

To the first commenter:
First of all, the bands weren't wonderful. They were pretty insignificant. People who have windows that face the Oval don't all have their foot in the grave, as you so thoughtfully put it. The people with their foot in the grave probably can't hear anyway so take your wise cracks somewhere else. People who choose to work at home, or spend time the way they want to in their apartments are entitled to do just that without a forced StuyTown soundtrack to entertain the likes of you. And guess what, wise guy. If someone wants a nap, who are you to judge that? It has nothing to do with what you think. It's no joke that people are pissed off and it's people like you that no one can stand. Please feel free to mingle with your new neighbors in the dogshit grass forever and listen to crappy music. Have a ball. But how dare you decide what other people should do? Go back home to your rent-paying mommy.

It should be underlined that the neighbors at the Oval that day were very small in number.

I heard they are having a lot of layoffs in the Leasing Office because they just can't fill these crappy, substandard apartments. Not even with the ever-gullible NYU/type dorks! Anybody else heard about this?

Thank you to the poster at 3:12 pm yesterday. The poster who thinks the bands in the Oval were wonder is either someone from the leasing office trolling here or one of the immature, entitled little twerps that have been forced upon us by a landlord desperate to fill the overpriced, chopped up apartments. I think Stuyvesant Town has gone beyond the point where it could ever be a family-oriented "oasis" for middle class hard working New Yorkers. It seems to be more and more a dorm and transient temporary housing-oriented project. Rose is probably breaking the law by staging these noisy events, but nothing will be done because these people put themselves above the law. If the place is ever up for sale as a condo or coop conversion I don't think it will be affordable to the people who really would love to restore it to its former quality. It's been trashed and is only a desirable place to live if you are a parentally supported dipshit who is passing through for a year or so and don't mind having 6 roomies in a carved-up former real apartment.

Interpreted:

"I didn't feel like hanging out in my apartment listening to my 5 roommates blare that Ke$ha album again so I went to the Oval by myself. I'm socially inept so I immediately got on my Blackberry to update my Facebook status. "Chillin' on the Oval Lawn with my peeps! Woot!" Wow. These angry bloggers are right. These concerts do suck. My life is sad."

Funny part is there was no MENTION of this concert on ANY blog for DAYS. Fool.

Lux Living, please re-open your forum! Pleeeeeeeeze!

Hey 10:09pm - Lux Living can focus on anything he wants. He doesn't owe anyone anything. People should be grateful for what he's accomplished. It's the TA that has to provide the forum. They're the ones who gave it up when Lux Living took off. And after the poor turnout at the last concert, that shold tell management that most people really don't care so just stop the bs. If you have issues, you can contact Adam Rose yourself. Lux Living opened the ccommunication channel so use it. Why don't you host the forum for the TA?

BTW, I deleted post 10:09pm pretty quickly after I let it through, as I just couldn't see it being written for any other purpose than to get on Lux's case and rile up people here.

Again, anyone is free to start a blog of their own if you have complaints about any other blog/Facebook/etc. Go for it! And let's see what YOU can do.

Re: family life here. I was at the concert at the very end and listened to a woman with a beautiful and soft voice. She had about 20 kids dancing in front of the stage. I looked around and it was almost all families. As someone who does not have children, it was fun to see.

Was the concert the most amazing thing ever? No, but it was really nice on a beautiful day. And it was so soft that my husband and I could not hear it until we actually reached the lawn.

But I guess I do see things out of rosy glasses - it's a bad habit, but hopefully that doesn't make me a troll.

Getting back to the dog issue, has anyone else noticed the fact that many, many dog owners allow their dogs to crap and piss right in the area of where the greenmarket sets up? I was sitting on the benches opposite the area last weekend and personally witnessed at least 5 owners letting their dogs take a dump, and god knows how many were pissing on those poles that run along the area. I wonder if that's some kind of a health hazard. Perhaps the dept. of health should be notified.

Hi I made the original post about enjoying the bands.

I was in the oval with my wife and two children ages 2 and 4.

When we were looking to move when I was transferred to New York from Chicago, one person in my office told me he had grown up in Stuyvesant Town, attended Epiphany and that it was a great community for families. It was a recommendation I followed up on and am glad to now live in Peter Cooper.

Not only were we excited by the playgrounds here and other items that seemed family oriented including Oval Kids, the circus on the oval a few weeks ago and other events in the neighborhood, but we were also excited by what we have heard about the schools.

I had never heard of any of the four bands - and to be honest - I did not think all of them were that great - but I was willing to listen to them to give them the chance. I'll do the same thing with the recommendation from one commenter above to check out that Ke$ha album - because there must be something good about it if all 6 roommates like it!

I hope I get the chance to meet many of you on this board - but if I am in my office working during the week it is going to be tough if you are holed up in your apartment taking that Saturday afternoon nap when on the weekend!

Re: Dogs urinating and defecating on the Green Market area. Good point.

Well you know it all goes back to why is the green market here anyway? Why are food trucks here? It's nice that some happy little families are amused and easily entertained but people still have every right to spend their time doing anything they want. Dog pee near food and people sounds like a health issue. Anyone can call 311. Why wait for someone else to do it? Just do it.

Ya, and what's with those Lower East people coming in Sty Town !! Can't we block them off ? It's a private property, isn't it ? Those concerts attracts them like bees on honey and just make the situation worse. Some even come to walk their dogs in our parks. They are not even from here. When are we going to do something about it ? They make all the noise and parties.

"Ya, and what's with those Lower East people coming in Sty Town"

This is a bogus comment. It's the transplants ruining this place, not the native New Yorkers. Nice try dick.
