Our landlord, BLACKSTONE, can't handle Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. There is a lack of enforcement of certain "rules," and no amount of notice to this alleviates the problems. We are continually being told half-truths and fabrications. And we have no viable Tenants organization, despite our TA asking for dues all the time. So far, the politicians have proven to be basically useless. A typical New York story.

Teen Punks Spraying Stuy Town
Photos from Lux Living's Facebook.
Lux Living was alerted to a hate and vandalism crime that was committed, remarkably, still in broad daylight outside of 271 1st Ave, in Stuyvesant Town. Three white teens in sleeveless t-shirts (one of which had "FUCK YOU" written on it) spray painted, in fluorescent bright green no less, a swastika on a walkway and then a racist comment on a mattress left outside the building. The teens are probably Stuy Town residents or friends of residents.
You can read more about this incident by going to Lux's Facebook. The photos above are from Lux's page.
If you have an info, please call Stuy Town's Public Safety at 212-598-5233.
Several quick comments:
1) While we tend to bitch about the college/post-college crowd that lives here, I've always suspected that a portion of our "home-grown" tenants and their offspring are to blame for the crap that goes on here. If these kids are Stuy Town residents, this will affirm my suspicion.
2) Okay, how are those high-tech security cameras working for ya? How's the monitoring? If security can't catch these kids using these costly gizmos, it will be another pathetic sign of what's wrong with this complex.
3) If and when these kids are caught, they should be charged with as much as they can. They should also--and please let this happen--be forced to scrub CLEAN every inch of that paint from the walkway. And we, the tenants of this community, should be able to watch.

Good point about the security cameras. I've long been of the opinion that they are only "for show" and are not monitored at all. We need BOOTS ON THE GROUND!!!!!
I was just over at the 317 Ave C office. Must be at least 20 screens monitoring this place.
They've got to have at least a taped record of the vandals.
At least you'd think so.
Like we didn't have enough problems in Stuyvesant Town without vermin like this being on the prowl. I hope that when they are caught (and they will be caught) they are charged with hate crimes as well as vandalism. Stuyvesant Town is private property so Rose can go after them and file suit.
The security cameras are actually incredibly useful and are recorded. In this case, cameras allowed us to identify one of the teens who will pulled invited in for an investigative interview with his parents.

Great news!
Ironic that a place that was built for veterans who defeated the Nazis would be desecrated with a swastika.
This is one of the major problems the befalls ST/PCV today, which is that there are a lot of people who have lived here a long time, and a lot of others who have no respect or knowledge of the place they live in. It isn't as simple as new versus old.
It's great that we have "Stuy Town's Miscreant Home Videos" but it would be better if we had some way to actually police our neighborhood. No one will gets hurt by some ugly-minded graffiti--not physically, anyway--but that was not the case last year when we had a number of robbery/assaults on the property.
Catching the bad guys is great. Creating an environment that is inhospitable to crime is what we really need.
I don't need a 8 x 10 of the guy that attacks my Mom, Adam, I need you to take more meaningful steps to prevent it in the first place.
I'm glad that Security apprehended one of these punks. I still say we need more boots on the ground to deter this kind of thing. Stuyvesant Town used to be a very safe place to live and that was at a time when the surrounding area (especially south of 14th Street) was a drug-infested vile slum. Security was noticeably present and didn't have to rely on after-the-fact knowledge. A crime apprehended while it is progress is better than a video of it after the damage is done, especially if it is a crime that involves someone getting hurt. Sitting in front of a battery of cameras is the lazy way of doing it. Get those guys out there patrolling! Ye gods has Stuyvesant Town gone down the sewer since it was sold to the greedy and uncaring TS. If it ever makes a come-back as a great place to live it will be the miracle of the ages. I appreciate that Mr. Rose is doing the best he and his employees can and it is an uphill battle, but we need much more security and enforcement than we are getting whether it be vandals and criminals or QOL infractions like the students who live downstairs from me and have a party ever night (commencing at 11pm and finishing at 3 am!)
When the Ke$ha party was taking place outside my window a few weekends ago, I called security and within seconds they were able to tell me what the people looked like because they pulled them right up on the camera.
But I called my tip in as it was happening. If the person who submitted the tip to me had called Public Safety as it happened, they would have been able to zero in on these fucks within seconds.
I think - and I am speculating here - that if something like this happens and P.S. is not notified, they might be at the mercy of whatever the cameras in that area are in at the moment. Meaning, they might not have the best angle after the fact.
Everyone should program the direct number to Public Safety into their cells (212) 598-5233.
If you have a neighbor that "has a party every night that ends at 3:00 AM" I beg you to email me with the address. We will take legal action, I promise.
Thank you,
Adam R. Rose

Dear Mr. Rose,
I will certainly email you next time my downstairs neighbors have rave until 3 am. They are a nice, sweet bunch of kids, but they have NO IDEA how unsoundproofed these apartments are and that their music and stuff carries up and down the pipes so the whole line has to listen to the party without even having a drink with them! Mind you, I would rather just sleep than have a drink with them on a weeknight because I have to get up at 6:30 am to go and do a full day's work! This is why we "oldster" tenants pine for the days when carpeting was a requirement and partying outside of Saturday night was not welcomed by neighbors. Wouldn't want to get them kicked out, but would love them to STFU during the early morning hours of the weekday workdays!
Thank you for your concern.
ps have you ever heard a bunch of girls in high-heeled boots stamping over those parquet floors at 3 am? Sounds like a herd of wild horses!
@anon/3AM
I recently had a problem with the three chicks above me building furniture in their apartment at 11PM. No rugs, nothing on the walls to absorb sound, and no furniture with the exception of what ever they were building. I called Public Safety and they were at my place within minutes and shut them down. Renee R also scheduled a carpet inspection for them. For the most part the noise coming from the apt is OK.
There is NO reason any of us should tolerate the parties you're describing. We should always call Public Safety to report noise because they have a zero tolerance policy that I think would shock most of these juvenile predawn revelers. :)
It's not fun being a "mature" person living near noisy party animals. When you get woken up in the early hours by the hooting and hollering and woo-hooing and the wall-shaking music, sure you can call Public Safety, but then ya gotta pull your curlers out, put ya teeth in, find the glasses, trip over the cat and then wait for PS to arrive so that can come in and hear it. Youngsters like Lux Living and Adam Rose can probably find their teeth and glasses a lot quicker than an old gal in her sixties! :-)
I wish Lux Living would reopen his forum while the rent regulations are in crisis. I would enjoy reading what some of the poster on there would have to say about it. Some of them were very knowledgable about these laws. The TA has no blog and seems to give out minimal information.
I saw the kids who were leaving the graffiti they actually were crossing out a swastika going against nazis. The waz up nigguh graffiti is actually something that in the 90s was a thing white masters said to the african americans and afterwards they would reply we can keep going. So whoever wrote these well, i say LET THEM BE. Whoever this is jus thad hatred for racist and antisemetic you guys are all wrong.
Why is it I have the feeling you are one of duz guys?
@ 8:21 PM
1. Your mom needs to keep a WAY closer look on your 13 year-old delinquent ass.
2. The camera footage has the kids - one of which is you - painting the swastika on the ground and racist message on the mattress in the SAME exact color of green paint you were caught with. Nice "F*ck You" shirt by the way. Keeping your parents proud by the moment I'm sure!
3. I am friends with one of the witnesses who saw you do it and called the tip in.
Does MGMT need to have another meeting with your mom? This kind of shit works against your punk rock resume, trust me.
You want to rebel? Get an education and make something of your life. Success is the ultimate "F*ck You".
Aside from their terrible spelling, which shows their level of intelligence, these kids must not have much brains considering that the best excuse they could think up is that they were actually spray painting anti Nazi and racism signs/slogans over Stuy Town property. Management must have had a field day speaking with them and their parents!
Why is everybody so sanguine over the lapse of the rent protection laws? This is a crisis! I've emailed, phoned and written every pol and the gov. Nobody seems to realize what a dangerous situation we are in. I'm sick of hearing about gay marriage and Anthony Weiner when my home is in jeopardy!
I just posted this on the Lux FB page:
Janey, because of the minute by minute fluid situation in Albany and the millions of dollars that are arrayed against us, we are always seem to be a step behind the destroyers of the middle class. I volunteered for the morning Monday shift. My reasoning behind that the Ave C loop was not targeted because of the Lack of traffic there and the TA has limited resources (volunteer anyone?) to cover the entire ST/PCV project. I stopped by the 18th street entrance today and listened in and then offered my help to two volunteers who were talking to a 20 something PCV couple. The guy had fallen hook, line and sinker for the RE industry urban myth that his rent was subsiding the so called “rent stabilized” tenants. He did not even know , that as per the Roberts ruling, his lease was also covered under the rent stabilization protection laws including the right to renew. He also said that he was gone within a year so this transitory type of tenant, so beloved by the RE industry, is what we have to deal with. This fight will be very difficult, the odds are against us but as per the Roberts ruling, we can win with a lot of effort. Thanks

I wish those bozos in Albany (and this time I'm talking about Dem bozos) would stop trying to get the $175k income limit raised. A lot of us don't make anything even close to that amount and we are the ones who need the rent protections. My rent is $1,400 (and rising!) and is more than half my take home pay. Let's protect those who really need RS. If you make $175k you can afford a market rate apartment. I hope these stupid dems aren't going to screw it all up by holding out for the ridiculous.
In this time of crisis, the Lux Living website is totally useless. Unless you are a fan of Facebook (and I am not) there is nothing on that blog any more that can be of interest to inmates of PCSTV. The TA hasn't opened up a forum for tenants either and they are as useless as a glass of water in a flood. I'm glad we still have STR, though it would be nice to have a forum where we could exchange ideas, fears, hopes and questions. These are very upsetting times for a lot of us STPCV tenants, especially those of us who have been here a long time and are not getting any younger. Thank you, STR.
Actually, my blog is totally useless regarding serious tenant issues, if we are talking about what's happening in Albany and with rents, et.
Lux can speak for himself here, but I'm assuming his blog (which was splendid in this capacity) was taking up too much of his time and comment moderation. The Facebook can't match that kind of attention and commentary, of course, and that's a shame.
But really, isn't it up to the Tenants Association to be the organization that hosts a website/board that will give tenants the latest info, with give and take commentary?
STR, Yes, it is up to the Tenants' Association to open up a forum for tenants to discuss issues such as what is happening the RS laws, etc. LL did us a great service for a long time. It's a pity he had to close it down just as all this crucial legislation was under way. We really do need a forum or at least a bit more information from the TA. The current RS laws will expire in four years, which is not a very long time. I was hoping they would be renewed for at least 10 years or made permanent. As to the Roberts ruling, what is happening with that now? There is an absolute dearth of information coming from the TA and LL is closed down so where do we go for info?
I totally regret not keeping Lux Living open until this rent regulation business was taken care of. I honestly thought the TA would be more hands on with the tenants throughout this period. But they seem obsessed with the condo/co-op plan for which nothing will happen until the complex becomes profitable and can be sold again. So sit tight for 3-4 years!
I was naive to think an organized group of people financially backed by donations and armed with volunteers would have done a better job at getting information out there in real time than Lux Living. Silly me!
With regards to the LL Facebook Page, you do not need to 'Like' it or even JOIN Facebook for that matter to view all of the links and info I have been posting on this topic.
In the past month the LL FB post views have risen 51% to 140,053. So people are reading it.
Lux is entitled to move on. The forum is up to the TA.
Judging by the outcome of the rent law vote, I guess Cuomo really had his pockets lined by the RE lobby, not least of all the ugly idiot, Rob Speyer. Maybe Shelley was slipped a few envelopes too. I definitely won't vote for Cuomo again. I'll vote for Charles Baron before I'll vote for Cuomo!
No one is saying that "Lux" isn't entitled to move on. Sadly, some of us are really going to miss having a voice. The TA is USELESS!!!!!
Seems like the TA gave it up when Lux Living got popular and productive. Lux, I believe your mission was to see us thru the Tishman Speyer era. You did that and more, even opening up the channel of communication between all tenants and Adam Rose. The TA is the group who should regret falling down on the job. Lux Living did the impossible and Tishman Speyer is gone, which is great. The Facebook page is still a source of information and thoughts for all and your important work continues to be informative and appreciated. Lots of people are grateful. Thank you. And thank you, too, STR. You guys really stepped up and continue to do that.
With RS now renewed and the Roberts decision apparently not going to be addressed by the legislature, it is possible that CW may begin the sale process again. It is my belief that they were waiting to see if RS was extended and strengthened and whether the Roberts decision would be overturned. Now they know those answers so they(and potential buyers) can , with much greater certainty, figure out the value of STPCV.
On another note, I wish STR or LL would write something about the now regular towing of cars from PCV road by management. Yet another "amenity" brought to us by our "friends" at CW and Rose
The rent deal in Albany was very disappointing. I (like many others) was hoping that they would strengthen the existing laws and do away with vacancy decontrol. So much for Govenor Cuomo and his grandiose promises! The fact that they are only renewed for 4 years means we go through this ordeal again and will probably be given a lot of empty promises again. During the next 4 years there will no doubt be many more apartments lost from the rent stabilization protection and so there will be fewer of us to lobby for renewal. If PCVST goes up for sale again we know where the "Tenants" Association will be spending its energies. All they want is to buy. Tishman Speyer may have been excorsized as our landlord, but they continue to thrive in the pockets and coffers of those who are supposed to be doing the people's business in Albany. Roberts, it seems, is an unresovable situation and it seems to only favor the landlords inasmuch as tenants in illegally deregulated apartments have yet to see a penny. I've never been so disgusted.
True dat.
The extension and mild enhancement of the RS regs will cripple CW. They'll try to dump this mess on the tenants. The conversion will probably fail but we shall wait and see.
The demise of LL basically shut down the debate. The Facebook page is a castrated cousin of the former site. Too bad. Just when we really needed it. The timing makes me wonder.
@10:08
I WISH I could tell you I got paid fat amounts of cash to close the LL blog and concentrate on FB. It's not too late though! Make me an offer I can't refuse ;)
The conversions WILL fail because the property is too big and the TA couldn't run a bake sale let alone a condo/co-op conversion.
And who can afford a conversion? Seriously, in one breath people are worried about losing their homes over rent regulations laws and in the next breath they're ready to buy their apartment? Pick a color.
"The conversions WILL fail because the property is too big and the TA couldn't run a bake sale let alone a condo/co-op conversion."
Good one. Sad to say it's true, but also very funny! Thanks I needed that.
Whatever happened to the kids?
I know one of the kids. And it the shirt said "fuck cops" not "fuck you" and they are not racists at all. In fact when i hang out with them we have black, asian, hispanic, and jewish people with us. And besides. Stop bitching about one piece of graffiti. We live in nyc get used to it. If you dont like it go move to some suburb in new jersey. God, i dont think i have ever seen graffiti on the news, but of course if it happens in stuy its the biggest deal. Oh and they are not dangerous either. Another article said parents didnt wanna jeprodize the saftey of their kids. People in stuy are such pricks.
oh and by the way. The spelling (Ni**uh) is from a TV show called the boondocks. And so is the WAZ GUD? And when they said they were spraying over it it was a joke. So i think you guys are the stupid ones here.
