Preparing for "Frankenstorm"

By now all residents should have received flyers under their doors from management on how to deal with Hurricane Sandy.

I would also advise residents to monitor the TA Facebook page, which is always a good source of news as it's happening.

Here's more info on preparation for and safety during the storm:

http://town-village.com/2012/10/26/hurricane-sandy-alert/

According to New York City’s Office of Emergency Management, at the time of this posting, Hurricane Sandy is moving northward off the southeastern U.S. coast., but its precise track is still unknown. Additionally, though the effects of Sandy on the city are also still unknown, high winds in excess of 100 mph are expected.

On Friday afternoon, CW Capital/CompassRock issued a resident alert regarding hurricane Sandy. Residents should expect to get the notice under their doors.

Management is asking that residents take the following precautions and maintain: water, non-perishable food, a battery operated radio and a working flashlight and extra batteries, rather than candles.

Residents are also being asked to make sure cell phones are charged and check in on neighbors.

Other precautions include closing and locking windows and shades, keeping folded towels on window sills to absorb leaking water and staying away from windows.

Residents who park in Stuyvesant Town Garage 3 or 4 should move their vehicles somewhere outside the flood zone by 8 a.m. on Monday, October 29.

More information can be found online on the website of the NYC Office of Emergency Management. Updates will also be posted on the Stuyvesant Town website.

Con Ed has also issued an alert, with the following safety tips:

If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them. Treat all downed wires as if they are live.

Never attempt to move or touch them with any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves or water.

Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately. If a power line falls on your car while you’re in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.

If your power goes out, turn off all lights and appliances to prevent overloaded circuits when power is restored.

Avoid opening your freezer to see if food is still frozen. Every time you open the door, room-temperature air enters and speeds the thawing process. Most fully loaded freezers will keep food frozen for approximately 36 to 48 hours; half-full freezers will keep food frozen for approximately 24 hours.

The New York Times reported today that Con Ed is "preparing to shut off two of its networks in Lower Manhattan, known as Fulton and Beekman, if the water in the harbor surged over the bulkheads around the Battery." Does anyone know what areas are served by the Fulton and Beekman networks? Could this affect Stuy Town?

I assuming (let me underline "assuming") that this does not cover Stuy Town. But every resident should be prepared to be without hot water (which is already happening in parts of PCVST) and electricity for a day or two.

You are right, Stuy Town Reporter. I tweeted Dan Garodnick asking this question (about the Con Ed Fulton and Beekman networks), and he tweeted back: "No, Fulton and Beekman networks do not serve Stuy Town. They are south of Brooklyn Bridge, E of Broadway."

Hot water (and potential heat) was turned off in my building in PCV last night. I also received a recorded phone message from Management to notify me (not all my neighbors got this call). I also got an email from Management last night and an update email this morning.

Summary:
Con Ed has shut main steam vaults in our area. Hot water is shut down until further notice. Cold water not affected.
Management has secured emergency generators for water pumps in case power goes out.
Office is closed. Only emergency maintenance requests will be responded to.
Call Public Safety at 212-598-5233 (or option 2), if necessary for residents with special needs who require assistance.
Medical emergencies--call 911.
Management's website, Facebook page, and Twitter will be updated.

Just got an email from Compass Rock that they have secured emergency generators to make sure the water pumps keep going in case of an electrical shut-down. Yay! Maybe this company isn't so bad after all. No other management we've had has had the gumption to do that!

By the way, no electricity, no water period. Fill up that tub for the toilet.

“I remember when Crazy Eddie was funny.” Hey, I’m still funny. Bowing to the new demo, I am just funny in an artisanal, free range, Woo Hoo, Like Yah, kind of way. If you don't like my new brand of funny, go move back to Suburbia! :)

OK bookies, we need a betting line. Will the "Winter Wonderland" survive the projected 65 MPH winds?

I'm not going to let through any more posts about whatever bickering is going on at the TA Facebook page. Because then the bickering moves here! Stay safe!

Anon 11:12 AM:

Um....no, the woman who went to the Baruch shelter is well aware of the Zones, since she posted links and a map for correct ones. So please stop posting false info about other tenants. Thx.

After reviewing that post, I deleted it.

BTW, am I not correct in thinking that, this time around, management is doing a better job of informing tenants about the storm and taking proactive steps to see that things run more smoothly here than during Irene? Different management, of course.

"Different management, of course."

Different storm, too!

After last year's experience, everyone is taking this one more seriously.

What idiots leave a crane up in this weather....

BTW, One57 is going to be the worst eyesore we have seen yet in Manhattan. I was there a couple of months ago and my heart sank when I saw how ugly it looked and how much it puts 57th Street in shadow. It apparently also casts a shadow over Central Park. A nauseating monument to Bloomberg's New York.

STR, everything about Bloomberg is nauseating. He and his developer friends have just about destroyed New York City. Now he wants them to rape Midtown in the Grand Central area. I wish he would get sucked into the Bermuda Triangle, but it isn't on his route to his weekend home. Darn!

Been flipping channels all day and I see the Mayor, Governor, President, various and sundry government and EMS types all talking about the storm with grim expressions and serious voices. Then, the weatherman comes on and he is the most happy chappy on the news! These tv weather forecasters are practically having orgasms as this storm progresses! They are just loving it!

the river has completed overflowed 23 street in the last hour. this is as bad if not worse than 1992

Stuy Town Reporter said...

The FDR is under water below 20th from reports.

23rd Street is a river and has been for a couple of hours. Some cars are almost submerged. Power went off in Waterside a while ago, and the lights in the VA hospital are out.

The efficacy of the new management remains to be seen. There has been no security on PCV buildings where the lobby door battery backup failed, allegedly because it was placed in the basements by the Rose where it was flooded and failed. Also, there has not been a noticeable security presence around ST or PCV on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
