The Bloomberg Era is Just About Over

He may still have to face a run-off, but unless something unforeseen happens, Bill de Blasio will be the next mayor of this city (after defeating the Republican challenger, of course).  I don't expect anything to change regarding Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village, but at least we should have someone in the office who will have more concern for us, and the middle class, than the Little Napoleon, Bloomberg.  There's the probable possibility that things will get worse in the city, for everyone, but Bloomberg took things too far in terms of dictating how New Yorkers should behave and in providing the rich with an open hand in removing the middle class to replace it with their own wealthy class and high-rises and exclusive restaurants. Thankfully, Christine Quinn was humiliated by her poor showing. I would like to see any politician who supported a third term for Bloomberg and themselves get booted out of office, but with a generally apathetic citizenry that's not about to happen.  I was hoping Spitzer would win against Stringer, as I think the latter is a typical ineffective politician who talks out of the both sides of his mouth, but I certainly realize why people wouldn't vote for the former "john" who is not exactly Mr. Lovable.

Onward and upward.

Delighted that Christine Quinn was blown out of the water. She deserved it for backing Bloomberg for a third term as Mayor.

Good for de Blasio that he is most likely the Democratic candidate for Mayor, though given the fact that the majority Democratic voters here have routinely elected Republicans for Mayor, it will be interesting to see how he fares in the general election in November.

Delighted that Gale Brewer won for Manhattan Borough President, despite the fact that she did little campaigning that I could see.

I held my nose and voted for Spitzer. Too bad he lost to Stringer. Spitzer has his personal issues, that's for sure, but I think he would have made a good Comptroller, better than Stringer. Time will tell if Stringer has the goods, but I tend to doubt it.

DeAsio still has to face Lhota. I voted for Spitzer because I don't trust Scott "Fishface" Stringer. I'm sorry Spitzer lost.

Sorry, I meant to type "DeBlasio" of course. Darn iPhone keyboard is too small for my fat fingers.
BTW, Verizon outage is until September 21. I switched to TWC today. So good to have internet working again.

"I noticed that T&V endorsed Lhota. Typical Hagerdorn. His old man was a thundering Republican."

In the previous issue, T&V endorsed DeBlasio on the Democratic side.

The editorial also said, "Town & Village reached out to the three Republican mayoral hopefuls to ask for their thoughts on how they would help middle class New Yorkers, including tenants, which we hoped to share with readers here. But unfortunately, none of the candidates responded to the question. Not one."

What Professor K over at the TA Facebook page doesn't get is that packing students into STPCV places a great burden on the resources here and also justifies the high prices the landlord is getting for apartments--and contributes to rapid apartment turnover, which raises prices, too.

Funny, the TA Facebook page is now being taken over by people who probably do not belong to the TA.

For all those who think de Blasio will be a great mayor, think about how dangerous this city was when Dave Dinkins was Mayor and he greatly limited the police.Among many others things does anyone remember the Crown Heights Riots where rioters were allowed to rum amok , destroying much property and killing one innocent civilian, all the while Dinkins would not allow the police to quell the riots? Also id de Blasio is such a proponent of affordable housing, then why did he take such large contributions from landlords( the second highest of any candidate for mayor)?

Stuy Town Reporter said...

I'm not saying de Blasio will be a great mayor. And I do think NYC will go down the tubes, year by year. But I'll be damned if the rich are going to be dancing on the graves of the middle class.

Anonymous said...

STR
There are ways of giving more to the middle class without destroying law and order in this city. I remember when Dinkins was Mayor a policeman told my wife he was not allowed to make arrests of drug dealers who were dealing drugs on East 23 Street and 2nd Ave. That only the special"drug police" could do that. And who can forget the legions of squeegee men (some of whom were violent) and other lawless activities that were ignored by Dinkins.

He has no idea what he is doing. Raise taxes on the rich? How? Unless he uses the NYPD to take siege over the NYS Senate he can't do a goddamn thing. Stop Stop and Frisk? Enjoy getting mugged and raped in Central Park again.

I am sick of hearing this crap about New York being safer thanks to Giuliani and Bloomberg. Every time I pick up a newspaper or watch the news I see as much violent crime as there was "back in the day." Statistics get fudged to make it seem as though there is less crime. Keep in mind that a lot of people who died in the past as the result of violent crime are now saved by advanced medical procedures. The evening news is full of rapes, muggings, murders and robberies. Giuliani and Bloomberg used heavy-handed racist techniques to harass minorities, but they did not lower the crime rate. The subway trains are full of panhandlers and the drug dealers are still out in force. The stench of pot permeates Stuyvesant Town and I'm sure a lot of stuff is being sniffed by the yuppies, students, et al., just as much as in the "bad old days." What did Giuliani and Bloomberg do for the homeless? Nothing. We have more homeless than ever and they are not all drunks, druggies and mentally ill (not that there aren't still a sizeable number of those); today we have people who are the working poor and are just unable to keep up with the rents in NYC because the tenements and SROs have been bought out and turned into high-priced condos. It's all smoke and mirrors when they claim that the city is better and safer. Like hell it is.

That's right, keeping the rents affordable for the Stuy Town old timers and other REAL New Yorkers was a GREAT reason to vote against anyone remotely similar to Bloomberg. Preventing real estate development? Have you walked around NYC lately? There is plenty of that going on but almost all of it is unaffordable except for the Russian billionaires that the mayor loves so much. (By the way, Russian billionaires pay the bills for the rest of us? I've been paying NYC taxes for 25 years BECAUSE I am not a foreign gangster.) I wish DeBlasio luck, he'll need it. Good riddance to the policies of the last 20 years. Dinkins wasn't great but I'll take THAT NYC any day compared to this one.

Sorry, upon re-reading, my comment wasn't very clear. (No more commenting after a glass of wine on an empty stomach!!) I wasn't being sarcastic and I lived through the Dinkins era. Granted, I am a Manhattanite and not a Brooklynite so I'll only speak for my own borough but I was NEVER afraid, back then, and I lived next door to a rather seedy housing project in Chelsea, which is where I grew up. I didn't know anyone who was a victim of crime then, but I do know many people who were subsequently priced out of Chelsea and NYC and I consider that a most painful crime against them so , yeah, I'll take 1988 NYC over 2013 NYC and that's no revision of my reality. Everyone else can speak of their own. Good riddance to the Giuliani/Bloomberg/Ray Kelly/Quinn era.

Roger That said...

Get a grip, Tommyboyardee.

DiBlasio's plan is to raise NYC top income tax rate from 3.876% to 4.41% on incomes over $500,000 for 5 years only.

That means if you're a married couple with an income of $700,000, the city's Independent Budget Office estimates you'd be able to take about $32,000 in tax deductions and exemptions. Now you're at $168,000 in taxable income over the $500,000 threshold so your added tax bill would be all of $897, or 0.13% of your income. As you get wealthier, the tax is more higher.

It's grating to hear the whining that's coming from certain quarters after what 12 years of Bloomberg has done to the rest of us.

ITA on the RUG AND CARPET INSPECTION... TA where are you ?

Usually sounds like horses are running above our apartment. No one gives a damn.

TA WHERE ARE YOU? CARPETS, THICK AND FULL ROOM

Anonymous said...

@ Anonymous September 16, 2013 at 10:14 AM

There is no NYC law or ordinance requiring apartments to have a percentage of the floor covered with carpeting. Covering 80% of the floor with carpeting is just a provision in our leases that may or may not be enforced by the landlord.

So, how to get our landlord to enforce your upstairs neighbor's rug provision? There's always housing court. Except housing court is usually pretty hesitant to rule against landlords where there's a disputes between tenants. There's also NYC Criminal Court. Try charging your upstairs tenant with maintaining a nuisance.

As for the TA. They can't go to court for you, but perhaps when they return from one of their fully paid extended weekend at the TA Bungalow-Mansion in Rockaway Beach, they can mount a full-scale not-enough-rugs protest in front of the leasing office. Oh wait...

Anonymous said...

Will be looking into upstairs neighbors fines then for nuisance laws. Has anyone done this and was successful?

+++ing everyday , nights too. Since there's probably 4 or 5 people living above me (one BR), lots of clicks, heels and bangs, drops. Sick of this. ANYONE listening?

Where does one file a complaint against noisy neighbors? (not with stuy but a personal complaint/ suit)? thanks if anyone knows

Anonymous said...

Justa thought... Have you tried going upstairs and talking to your neighbors? It's a lot more effective than waiting for the asshats at CW to do it for you.

Worked somewhat for us. I wasn't rude or nasty, just simply explained that the reason all tenants have always been required to have rugs or carpets was because the hollow space between floor and ceiling acts like a drum and amplifies the noise. What sounds to you like a click upstairs, sounds like a loud bang to us on the other end. Not surprisingly, they had no idea.

It took a couple of visits, and they never bought rugs , but they did stop wearing shoes in the apartment.

Why do these dimwitted assholes keep sending us emails exhorting us to refer friends? I caution everyone I meet not to ever even think of moving to Stuyvesant Town because it is run by criminals who aren't fit to run a Skid Row flophouse. We are drowning in garbage and dog shit, have unusable laundry rooms (those of us who do actually have laundry rooms) and have to put up with the stench of skunk pot that permeates every building courtesy of the noisy, drunken, immature student residents. We have transient B&B people who bring in bed bugs and compromise the safety and security of everybody and a "landlord" that doesn't give a flying fuck about anything other than collecting the rent and harassing older tenants. Well, not just older tenants, but also the market rate (rent stabilized is a nonsense term as it pertains to them) who they want to get rid of so they can jack up the rent and/or force them out in order to churn the apartments. I can't believe who low this place has sunk since CW took over and installed their vile Compass Rock outfit. There should be a criminal investigation into why they are collecting obscenely large management fees while at the same time running the place into the ground. The harassment alone should be investigated. If New York wasn't such a corrupt city, run by unscrupulous politicians who get their jobs by back room deals, things probably would be a lot different.

Anonymous said...

What Bloomberg and his filthy ilk fail to acknowledge is that New York City is overcrowded, overbuilt, overpriced and, most of all, overrated. It is not the be-all and end-all of American (or global) cities. It is filthy, dangerous and a magnet for idiots who don't realize this and for those who would prey upon them. I am a native New Yorker, but I'm not blind or stupid! I see how the city has changed and been handed over to a ruthless cadre of developers thanks to back room deals with dirty politicians. At least Boss Tweed benefited the real people in some ways. Boss Bloomberg benefits them in no ways!

I have waited at Select Bus stops, little paper ticket in hand, and watched 10 or more regular buses go by and waited at regular bus stops and watched a dozen or more "Select" buses go by. What is wrong with the old system of LImited and Local buses stopping at the same stops? The Select Bus stops and the regular bus stops are always half a block away and it is impossible (for a senior) to sprint from one stop to another to get whichever bus comes first! That woman is a total lunatic and has wreaked havoc in this city with the crackpot ideas. God forbid she would focus on fixing potholes and keeping the traffic flowing! POS is a Bloomturd flunky.

Whoever knows isn't saying. But I suspect that those affected will have to wait until the basement is completely reconstructed to access any part of it (other than temporary laundry room). So far in my building, the elevator electric panel has been moved to a higher floor (much drilling in utility closets on each floor) and asbestos has been removed around ground-level windows.

Here's a hint that a lot of the work should be done by early December: some new permits have gone up in my building. One was issued on 9/23/13 (no expiration date) for electrical work associated with renovation of the laundry room. Two are dated 9/16/13 and expire 12/10/13: (1) Alteration type 2--Arch demolish and construct interior partitions, ceilings, and doors, modify mechanical ductwork, remove and install plumbing fixtures and related piping as shown on drawings filed herewith; (2) Alteration type 2--mech/HVAC demolish and construct interior partitions, ceilings and doors, Modify mechanical ductwork. Remove and install plumbing fixtures and related piping as shown on drawings filed herewith. No change in use, egress or occupancy.

@8:04, what's with the "dearie" shit? Clearly you can piss further than me. I bow before your superiority complex. You da man and are most definitely the very bestest tenant ever! See? One voice can really can make a difference. As 8:04 can tell you, just look at all the changes those single efforts have resulted in.

PS has been able to give fine for a while now and they used to, according to what I've read and heard. But in PCV it's hard to actually find an officer--they're not on foot and they're rarely riding around. I've come to think that the only way to get people to behave is for all of us to call out bad behavior when we see it. You'd think that after spending so much money on landscaping that CompassRock would take more active steps to preserve and protect it, but that concept may be too intellectually taxing for them.

Agree entirely. Awful that we have such a bunch of incompetents in charge here.

Why silence from TA about all of the problems raised here and on Facebook?

There is very little point in contacting our elected representatives because they are all owned by the NY Real Estate Cabal, which is worse than the Mafia. In fact, there is probably more honor and decency in the Mafia.

Good Bye, Bloomie and Good Riddance! Maybe this city can get back to being a City with heart and soul. We have had enough of your gentrification and glass boxes and RE Mafia. Go away and stay away, you horrible little man. As someone said before me: New York City is overcrowded, overpriced, overbuilt and overrated. It used to be a City for everyone, not just the hipsters, students and tourists.

I hope things don't change suddenly and we get stuck with Joe Lhota. He looks and sounds like a mean little mother....er!
