Monitoring

Well, I decided to see if things work or don't work, so I set myself up with an easy task. I'll be monitoring four things, just four:

1) Whether the person with the injured dog will find out which dog did it. Fairly easy, one would assume.

2) How long will it take for the graffiti bench at the Oval Fountain to be fixed? Fairly easy, too, and notice that it's a game winner as it's not tied to a specific time period.

3) Whether those new laundry carts (with signs!) will be returned to the laundry rooms. Difficult, I know.

4) Whether speeding bicycles will stop once they get to the Oval per written instructions on all access points. Difficult, too, but what the hell....

Add one more thing:

The poor kids who are being bitten by squirrels because the squirrels have become accustomed to being fed by irresponsible buttholes on the property. So far, there have been three who've been bitten, and only one of them was with a subpar grownup who was helping to feed the rodents.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

I have no problem with squirrels I must admit. I am out more than the average person, too.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

So I step outside momentarily and see four (!) bicycles speed around the Oval, no PS in sight!

I got no problem with squirrels.

I got problems with pit bulls and Rottweilers.

I got problems with Oval concerts

If I lived right above Oval Cafe I'd have another problem.

Note: I'm just monitoring four things right now for the blog, but there's so much more to monitor!

Got an email from Management advertising 5 bedroom apartments. Talk about population explosion in this place. I don't think they are flex apartments, but you can bet your bippy that they will become10 bedroom (i bathroom) dorms.

Anonymous said...

um, just put SPEED BUMPS for the bikes, randomly. cheap and effective.

duh.

Anonymous said...

5 bedroom ST apartments have been around here since it was built.

Received an e-mail survey from the TA concerning management. What a joke. Like they will really act on anything. Just like the survey sent by Blackstone when they first took over.

Tommyboy said...

I await the results! The new management must refrain from using the word refrain, a simple NO, is a far better communication.

Anonymous said...

Agree with 11:13's comment. There are quite a few 5 bedrooms scattered around ST on the Main level. I am wondering if they are going to start turning 3 bedrooms into 5 bedrooms though. You split the living room and master bedroom and you get your 5 rooms (and 1 bathroom!). At least the legit 5 bedrooms have 2 bathrooms.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

There's a report by two relatively unknown residents on the TA page that gets me hot and bothered. They should know better. I'm here to give them the truth.

One report ends with: "I will say that our fine Public Safety Officers do 'police' these speeding bicycle riders, especially around the Oval. I've seen it first hand many times. Let's all get along please and not be quick to criticize."

Currently, I believe that I'm more present during the day than you are, unless you're just sitting all day in the Oval. PS has periodic times where a PS officer on a moped thingie goes around and around the Oval--for a brief while. There are also some walking PS officers who will tell someone on a speeding bike to get off. That said, there are many, let me repeat "many," times where there is NO PS officer around, or where a random PS officer just isn't looking. Whether he's not looking as a matter of convenience is another thing... Oh, I just saw another bicycle speeding around the Oval--not stopped cause there's no one to do the stopping. Where were you?

So I think, whether you know it or not, you are telling a half-truth. As a matter of fact, I know you are.

Next: "Public Safety Officers do a great job to help us all in all ways on the property." Yes, but.... There are times when certain ones don't do such a great job, depending on the job. Typically, if someone is in trouble, they do a great job and are there for the person. But at other times.... You just have to read the posts not just here, but at the TA Facebook page and the non-TA page. So again, an exaggeration.

Look, I don't want to rat on PS. Some of them do a great job, some less than spectacular, and some are merely there to pick up a check. Some look the other way. All I know is that I see, every day, people ignoring the bike rules and ignoring the weight limits put on dogs or the very dogs themselves, if they are banned.

Stop bs-ing people. Just give them the truth.

Anonymous said...

For the love of God - enough with the squirrels! I will not stop feeding them and perhaps if the parents picked up all the garbage (food) they leave around them, this wouldn't happen.
I just can't with people complaining about feeding squirrels!

So the first thing I see when I go outside (I'm usually up and out around post 7am) is a dog looking like some German Shepherd and definitely larger than 50 lbs. He and his owner are well inside Stuy Town, so it doesn't appear an outside straggler. Thanks, Rick!

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Another large dog!

Stuy Town Reporter said...

You can try to keep a lid on certain things, but it's impossible to do 100% or 90% or even 80% of the time or more. Depending on when and where, you're going to get lawbreakers who probably don't feel they are breaking the law or if they believe they are, it's one of those jaywalking type of things that can be done any time.

Anonymous said...

Ahhh now I get who you people are, the crazy squirrel feeders. No wonder No no one take you seriously.

Anonymous said...

On the TA official fb page there are a lot of comments about the squirrels and even a video of some elderly miscreant feeding the critters. The mommies want this video turned over to Management - presumably so the perp can be caught and punished.

Turning now to the Tenants fb page (the independent one) there's a whole lot about the illegal renting going on via Craigslist. Photographs of apartments turned into multi-occupant flop houses for millenials. Nothing on the TA page about this. Now, I wonder who Management will go after (if they go after anybody), the senior feeding the squirrels or the tenants advertising on Craigslist for multiple room mates?

OMG! How far down the sewer has our once-beloved PCVST fallen! Captain Rick, just keep the Carnival Cruise boat sailing. Btw, isn't Carnival Cruise the low class effort that keeps having passengers falling overboard, plagues of disease and equipment failure? Sounds about on par with Cap'n Rick and crew.

With respect to the kind of job Rick Hayduk is doing...

1. It seems as if things like laundry room issues and building cleanliness are being addressed although others might be better able to judge this.

2. Grounds maintenance = quite a bit.

3. Touting of rules...quite a bit.

4. Enforcement of rules = 0.

5. Marketing to students and use of flex apts = full steam.

6. Pet friendly = big time

If there are about 1000 units here that own dogs and 3000+ units that house students, that means about 36%-40% of the place essentially love what Hayduk is doing, and without any organized opposition, these are the groups he'll continue to play to. So for him the more lax the enforcement of rules, the better.

Most people don't care about the student issues unless/until they're directly affected.

So between the students, the dog owners and the I-don't-cares, I'd say Hayduk's effective support is well over 50%.

What's the position of the TA in all this? The I-don't-cares won't join the TA because they don't care. Students have no reason to join.

That basically leaves 2 issues around which to align: dogs and MCIs. But MCIs come up haphazardly so without an MCI that affects everyone, there's no cohesion.

That just leaves dogs as an ongoing issue. And since dog owners often feel themselves the targets of dissatisfaction, there is more cohesion among them than among non-dog owners. So if the TA shows that it's willing to stand up for dogs, dog owners are likely to join and pay dues.

This means that eventually the TA will probably become the STPCV Dog Owners Association since so far it really has shown no other agenda than to curry favor with mgt, politicians and gain membership dues.

Seriously, folks. I've been here for what must be close to 30 years and I, and others, never had a squirrel problem. The only time I saw an "aggressive" squirrel was when the little guy was being fed, by hand, by another little guy, a human, and the squirrel accidentally marked that hand with a scratch. Of course, nowadays with the increase in population (human) and the increase in food (for humans) it may be a different scenario.

Some people come from outside to feed the squirrels. I know that for a fact. Some people just find it a harmless, peaceful pastime and that's what it always has been until recently. People who feed them by hand are wrong, totally wrong, but throwing them nuts to scramble for should be deemed a crime. Keep your eyes on your kids and don't multi-task on your fucking laptop or iPhone. I grew up here and our mothers watches us play in the oh-so-dangerous playground equipment and they sat and knitted or gossiped, but they didn't miss a thing that was going on and the squirrels came nowhere near us.

Too many people living here. Too many of them are total slobs who litter all over the place. The infrastructure is groaning under the added load and there's barely enough room to walk through the property with the crowds and the constantly zooming-by cyclists, skateboarders and roller bladers. Then, there are tons of fucking dogs with extended leashes. To make it worse, most of the people are glued to their phones and have earphones on, so they are totally oblivious - until they get a front wheel up the crack or a skate board in the achilles. It's probably safer to go for a stroll along the FDR.

The morons who are reading their phones will walk right into you and then "tut" as if it is your fault.

I really think you have a problem with reading comprehension and logic. Of course they don't know who is a MR or not, that is the point. Those high rent apartments, even if occupied by a hoard of roommates represent their business model. Without them, the place goes bust, and that is why they won't correct peoples behavior.

Anonymous said...

Too many signs. I'd like to see signs saying NO MORE STUDENTS and NO MORE HOTELS. More and more transients coming in and out.

Anonymous said...

Everything the folks at this blog want is exactly what the owners will not do.

You want few or no students; the owner wants more.
You want few or no dogs; the owner wants more.
You want the rules enforced; the owner wants to state as many as possible and enforce few if any.

Consider...what is it students expect from a dorm? Heat. Air conditioning. The plumbing working. The washing machines working. The public areas clean. That's it. Any rules & restrictions are not desireable. So what do we have here? Building functions working, buildings maintained and no rules enforced. Ideal.

what do students expect from a campus? Nice grounds, all completely accessible. The ability to bike, skateboard, etc. when and where they please. Few if any rules enforced. And that's exactly what we have here.

what would dog owners throughout the city most want? A situation that allows their dogs to shit and piss anywhere they like without any concern for curbing. The ability to leave the dog shit where it lies without worrying about being caught and fined. And that's exactly what they have here.

Unless agencies of the city take a hand in doing whatever they can about ST, you can expect more students and more dogs. Inevitably. Nothing said here or at any other site will change this. No stands taken by any groups will count for anything. And certainly don't look to our representatives. Politicians have shown no interest whatsoever in nearly all of the landlord moves here.

As things stand, you have only 2 options. Either move or put up with it. One sub-option of course is to continue griping. And another main option might be to actually go out and scream and rant at everything that disgusts you...which will probably keep you very busy for a while and then quickly land you in Bellevue. But consider, the circumstances there will probably be better than those here.

Anonymous said...

@July 11, 2016 at 12:54 PM, I don't agree with you. They've churned enough leases to get their "legal" rents up way past what the market will bear for quite some time, and you've obviously forgotten about the 20 year "affordability" agreement with the city. It's done. Over. Mission accomplished.

Disheartening to see dog crap still not picked up near the dog area in PCV, dog urine at the other dog area nearby, with the resultant smell and flies. That's the way it is now. Thank you, Rick. Thank you, TA. Just keep calm and look the other way.

"Unless agencies of the city take a hand in doing whatever they can about ST"
-----
In addition to "agencies of the city" we now have what Mayor de Blasio claims are "agents of the city" contributing millions of dirty, filthy dollars into and collecting their compensation from his nonprofit 501(c)(4) "Campaign For One New York" slush fund recently forced to shut down under dark clouds of corruption. Included among our mayor's "agents" is infamous PR lobbyist/attack dog BerlinRosen, which is/was also employed and deployed against us by major REBNY predator and PCVST TA business partner Brookfield (Do they remain partners?), our elected Councilman Dan Garodnick and Dan's puppet, our very own PCVST TA Board elected and entrusted with our exclusive access to $2.7 billion Fannie Mae purchase funding provided exclusively for us by our federal government to help us defend ourselves and keep our homes out of the hands of Wall Street/REBNY predators.

All the various NYC agencies, NYC agents and elected NYC representatives, including our PCVST TA board members, did whatever they could and continue to do whatever they can about ST, which consists basically of handing over the entire complex, including all our homes and our exclusive access to $2.7 billion Fannie Mae purchase funding, to major Wall Street predator Blackstone to help the notorious hedge fund complete and fully realize Speyer's business plan raking in multibillion dollar windfalls pushing our historic, world renowned, PCVST middle class community into extinction.

I've let pass the BerlinRosen post. Yes, BerlinRosen is a group that deals with, among others, the Mayor, Dan Garodnick, and our TA, among many others.

http://berlinrosen.com/careers

I don't know about the billions of dollars from Fannie May, which I'd like to hear about if verified.

Services: "Whether you need to raise your profile, move public opinion on a policy issue, communicate in a crisis, reach people online or persuade voters with TV and direct mail that wins campaigns, BerlinRosen can help."

About: "BerlinRosen's strategic communications and creative services professionals come to the table with deep experience in crafting messages for winning campaigns. Our principals got their start as campaign strategists, and that's the mindset we bring to your priorities: we leverage decades of experience working in newsrooms and on campaigns to deliver for our clients."

Nothing states that they are here to oust old-timers, but I must hear more.

Anonymous said...

This an opinion... I am not stating anything factual here. How is it possible that a TA that has aligned with a politician can truly be a voice for the community? I tend to disagree with Garodnick and everything he stands for, but the TA has formed an alliance with him, so how is the TA doing what's best for my interests and the many people on the property who do not agree with Dan? For the TA to be truly representative of the community, they need to disassociate from politicians and be an independent group. They should never be seen for photo ops with any politicians, regardless of the situation. As a Republican, I can never take what the TA says seriously, since they are always aligned at the hip with Democrats that I don't agree with.

It's time for the TA to wake up.

The close, friendly relationship the Tenant Association has with Blackstone makes them unqualified to negotiate on behalf of tenants, unqualified to oppose MCI charges. Tenants lost out on MCI battles because CW always challenged the Tenant Association's membership which disqualifies them from opposing. The CW Compass Rock would challenge the Tenant Association, then the DHCR would ask the Tenant Association to respond to the challenge of membership qualification, and the Tenant Association refused to give an answer to the DHCR on membership qualification so the Tenants then lose the MCI battle.

Tenants are better off filing challenges, lots of filings from lots of tenants.

No, will not happen.

>>STR, are you biased against the old timers (and are you under 50 yourself?) or are you just being wry?<<

Wry with a lot of cheese on top!

The edible cheese, btw. Better than butter!

Simply not true! Nobody here is actively trying to "get you out". We are very actively trying to bridge the very obvious generation gap that exists at PCVST, but voices such as yours will keep standing in the way.

And by the way, there are simply not enough potential tenants aged 60 and up out there to satisfy what you would find an acceptable resident here.

9:57 am which aspects of Management were you criticizing? Remember that the TA leadership is in bed with Management and they take it personally if anybody has the temerity to criticize Management or the stinking politicians they suck up to.

Anonymous said...

4:04 PM, if that's the case then the TA is operating under false pretenses. Maybe they should disband if they can't conduct themselves legally and above-board. I was about to renew my membership today and then I read your post and am having second thoughts.

Speaking of Bento Box, can someone recommend a good place to get pan Asian after 12AM?

My morning walk to Lenz's. There's a HUGE deposit of shit on the Oval Loop, west side, 20th St. This, and a near yet-not-cleared but visible deposit of dried shit that was picked up, but not completely.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

While the cat's away.... I said this a million times, and I will repeat it. When PS is absent, as they are now around the Oval, then the bike riders have free access to ride around the Oval, which a lot of them do respective of the huge signs. Spotted one a minute ago. In other words, people (some) don't give a damn about what the sign says.

Of course, we don't want PS around 24/7. Or do we?

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Irrespective....

You jest on the filing charges reply. You can file and file and file. This management blocks it every time and wins each time. There are hundreds filing, not a cent was repaid and not a cent reduced.

Yes, I know. I was making a pun!

False!

Unless my eyesight is going that huge pile of shit is gone by now.

if management BS really cared, (ahem, they don't) they'd put speed bumps. How then would their speeding little golf carts get around since the employees can't walk . why can' their employees walk? decades we are here and no one used a golf cart to speed around here scaring the elderly and small kids.

Anonymous said...

You do realise PS cannot forcibly stop a biker. The company would get sued if the person "fell" while being stopped. It's a pretty idiotic situation.

Anonymous said...

Amen on the golf carts. And the security big macho cars.

Just like all of the poor semi-crippled people of all ages who are unable to walk: those who bike and who skate (occasionally) and skateboard and scooter. All of the poor half-paralyzed geniuses of 45 years old in suits and in dresses with pizza boxes, brief cases, shopping bags.

Those who wheel themselves as they wheel their kids (sometimes multiple).

So many maimed human animals unable to walk on two feet!

Baby carriages (without idiots hanging onto them) and wheelchairs. Period. That's where wheels belong.

There's just too many people now, as evidenced by the Oval. Blackstone is cool with this, however, as it merely shows to them that the complex is a success.

I've been telling you that's it a different time now, different rules and different people and dogs around.

Take the dog problem (please! - old Henny Youngman joke). This morning I was met by unpicked up dog shit near the "no bicycles" base, and if not picked up (so far, hours later, it's not picked up), it will get smeared about the area. This is to ignore the various tiny shit that is partially left behind by dog walkers. This is to ignore the streams of dog urine that one meets with along the way. Face it, again and again, dogs are here to stay and such "problems" will exist as long as dogs are here. There is NO WAY management is going to have a clean environment. That's just the way it is, and no talking about partitions, noise, etc, is going to change that.

Students? Management needs them, plus when they move, the rent can go up if management chooses. (The "base" rent on some apartments can be eye-opening.) Again, that's just the way it is. And a thank you to the City Council and the TA while we're at it!

Bicycles around the Oval? You bet, as long as a PS officer is not around. And even then....

So it's a different ballgame now than it was twenty years ago. We, the old crew, have to live with it.

Anonymous said...

We don't have to live quietly with it unless BS has cut off our balls and ripped out our tongues.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Okay, it's been over a week. Not much headway on the laundry carts, but I assume it's like my building: sometimes you see more, sometimes less. Rather difficult to get a hold of this one if you don't go to other buildings. As for the biting dog, maybe we'll see headway, finally. The person whose dog was attacked may post photos of the perp. May.... The "graffiti" on the Oval bench has not been removed.... Some bicyclists around the Oval have not stopped their riding if no one from security is watching.

I don't know what score you'd give, but I'd say things are pretty much the way they have been when Blackstone took charge. Some good, some bad.... The big problem: dogs. They are here to stay (and we'll see more of them, including overweight ones).

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Oh, that crap spot still hasn't been cleaned or picked up from near the "no" riding bicycle base.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Saw four (that's FOUR) bicycles riding around the Oval at the same time. Is it worth commenting on this? Or is this just the norm?

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Basically, my relatively new attitude of not giving a shit (no pun intended) is working out fine. Unless you have noise in your apartment from an adjacent apartment, the attitude of not giving a shit is the way to go.

Anonymous said...

I stopped giving a shit a while ago. I never walk around the property because I don't want to be knocked down by a bicycle; I don't recycle anymore because I see people put all kinds of garbage into the recycling bins that is not recyclable; I took up my carpets because I got tired of vacuuming them. It's easier to run a dry mop around the rooms than push a noisy vacuum cleaner. If hardwood floors is good enough for students (which are downstairs and upstairs from me), then it's good enough for me. If BS gives me any BS about it, I will tell them to make sure the students comply with the rules if they want me to.

I just want to come home at night, close my door and enjoy my apartment for which I am paying a princely sum and for that I have to listen to a yapping dog and clippety clop heels from upstairs and downstairs. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Well, I feel totally like giving up. Maybe it's my mood, in which case I'll be back, but you've won. The "you've" is the City Council, our Mayor, Blackstone and their rep Rick, the "high" price of living here. You've all won. I just want to live in what peace I can have. You are welcome to fuck things up as best you can. (No doubt that is NOT what you are going for, but the result is the same.) Look around. If you are truly happy, I'm sorry. I can't feel that way. I just want to live and be left alone. I see "the rules" broken every time I go out, and not many people give a shit. STPCV is over and done with, and has been for some time, whether you are aware of it or not. Maybe if you are lucky you won't know or you won't give a shit.

I'm done with monitoring this blog. I don't even have the will to shut it down at the main posts. I just won't be passing anything through.

Good luck. You will need it. Maybe you will get it.
