One More Down

At first, I thought the noise was coming from an apartment that needed the important upgrade. But, no. As I neared the Oval, I saw that a huge tree had gone down. The photos will tell the story. One less shaded area in the Oval. Sorry.

Clear the way for Oval Pool. Only a matter of time. Bank on it!

Each successive bunch of bastards since MetLife has destroyed more and more of the Oval. They call this place an Oasis. It used to be, but not now, so they should take the word out of their advertising shit. This is just another ugly-assed NYC Housing Project. They don't all belong to NYCHA.

I was thinking of the same thing. What an "amenity"!

And if the tree fell on someone you'd then really have something to complain about.

Where would they have their shitty concerts and movie nights then?

Anonymous said...

No pool for the following reasons:

A pool would interfere with the Oval “Carnival Cruise” events like the movies and concerts. A pool would also interfere with the holiday special events. Also, there is the liability issue which would be major; the ice rink is enough of a liability issue for Blackstone/SPS. PS enforcement of the infamous “residents and their guests” rule would be problematic as well. As for this tree cutting, their paid for arborist company would say that the tree was old and diseased but this is par for the course for them to market the Oval to their preferred demo, flyover state transient single millennials. More sunbathing, more “special events”, etc.. Trees are for shade, wildlife (especially birds) and for introspective thoughts, not good for their current “Boca/Woo-Hoo/Focus Group” marketing strategy.

So you think the average tenant has a chance:

I don't think a pool would be in the Oval, but I bet it's been seriously talked about for someplace else but within this property.

Sir, about that roadway around this property? Does Blackstone own it, or is it city property and under police jurisdiction? Sir, sir....

I always thought playground 1 would have been the spot where the pool would go. Never got renovated, and it has a pool shape and is already dug down.

Anonymous said...

Would love a pool. Now that would be a real amenity but not practical here. The place is too big and populated. And I cannot imagine it would be pleasant with all of the dorm crowd and transients who would use it. Wish they would wipe out all of the other crap they call amenities here especially those concerts and Oval movies.

Large Pool in the Summertime and a large Ice skating rink in the winter, Concerts in the Spring and Fall. All you need is a 'Retractable' and your all set. Totally awesome! Charge money, no brainer. Good bye beautiful Oval forever.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

As most "amenities," a pool will present various problems, but be good for marketing. So, it's a battle between reality and marketing. Which will win out?

Anonymous said...

Problems? Like there aren't multiple problems already? This place likes the more people the better. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT PROBLEMS. Just continue to run this place into the ground and make money. That's what it is all about. Have a nice weekend.

Anonymous said...

The marketing for them IS realty.

Drownings are a much more serious liability than pretty much any of the other amenities liabilities, where an injury is really the top concern. I just don't see it happening for that reason - a story about a kid drowning in a Stuy Town pool would hit the media in a heartbeat, whereas a kid who breaks his leg ice skating wouldn't even hit this blog.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

What's the betting? If I know about it, of course.

"Drownings are a much more serious liability than pretty much any of the other amenities liabilities"

PCVST was NYC's safest residential community during the highest crime era (late 1960s - mid 1990's). No exaggeration. Look it up. It wasn't luck and it wasn't a fluke. During those exciting years this place truly was an 80-acre oasis. Right up until 2007 (Before Speyer) PCVST was world renowned for being the best place to live and raise a family in Manhattan, if not all of NYC. Residents looked forwarded to living here for multiple generations. There was a 7-10 year waiting list to get in. That historic PCVST community was worth the wait. Tens of thousands of intelligent, savvy NYC residents patiently waited to call PCVST their home. Just ask lifetime resident Dan Garodnick about all that.

Today this place is done. It's over. It's finished. It all ended when De Blasio, Garodnick and TA Boardmembers needlessly handed our homes over to Blackstone, which after Speyer should have been prevented from getting anywhere near this property. Instead, working and scheming for Blackstone, our lying conniving elected officials guaranteed in writing this historic community will soon become extinct. They killed it off for Blackstone.

Now during NYC's lowest crime era, it seems frequent violent assaults covered up by Blackstone are the most serious physical liability misinformed PCVST residents should worry about.

Why was the long time PCVST security chief suddenly forced into retirement?

To limit Blackstone's civil lawsuit liability stemming from a recent 10-minute violent assault and attempted rape infamously videotaped by PCVST's multi million dollar, high tech video security system. That brutal crime was not adequately responded to because obviously Blackstone didn't give a flying f#%k about PCVST resident safety.

No way would a pool work here. Too many buildings and apartments. Even if there was a membership charge, it still would not be feasible in such a large development with overfilled apartments and many transients.

The owners will NEVER wall-to-wall carpet apartments because wall-to-wall carpeting doesn't appeal to potential tenants and they desperately need these potential tenants to fill the thousands of empty apartments here. Ask any of the top, management people and, if they're being honest with you, they'll admit this.

However, if you haven't requested that management do a carpet inspection on the people living above you, you should. And you should stay on management until they do and until they make your upstairs neighbors 80% carpet their apartment, like the lease they signed requires them to do.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

Basically, you have push and keep pushing. Whether it's by design to keep one frustrated or not, that is the unfortunate responsibility of everyone here. A lot of people just give up.

Anonymous said...

right outside of Playground 5, another lovely tree gone and all that remains is a really ugly stump.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately I have had to contact PS each September when new students move in above each of the past 3 years to perform a carpet inspection.
One thing I’ve leaened - property services stated that tenants only need to carpet 80% of the exposed floors after furniture, beds, etc... not 80% of the flooring in apartment. This is a different spin on house rules - as they do not state this. Wish I knew this when I moved in, I Wouldn’t have spent so much money on pudding in carpenting.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

And I was told, by someone who we know in Management, that the 80% rule is only true when ALL the space is counted. In other words, that one could have less than 80% in a room if another room has more. So, you could have a room that has, say, 40% carpeting, if another area or areas have more. This was said with the straight face and the person looking directly at me.

Anonymous said...

Pardon the typo above - padding not pudding!

Anonymous said...

STR, you know these people are accomplished liars! They may not do anything else with any degree of excellence, but when it comes to lying they are accomplished to perfection. Utter perfection.

This is the kind of nonsense you spew when you want to spin the situation so you don’t have to make tenants do what it says in the lease they signed. And it’s total and complete BS. The 80% requirement has NEVER been interpreted this absurd way in the past and it shouldn't be now, either. Doing so would be a dishonest and deliberate attempt on Management's part to avoid their properly enforcing this regulation. It's a good thing that whoever said this to you, STR, didn't say it to me or he/she would have been very sorry, that's for sure. 80% of floors IN EACH ROOM/AREA, excluding the kitchen and bathroom, need to be covered. Here's the video of GM and CEO Rick Hayduk, himself, explaining exactly why 80% coverage is required: NOISE. Clearly, allowing a tenant to 100% carpet their bedroom so they can then carpet their living room only 40% would thwart the sole intention - the reduction of noise - of the 80% floor covering provision of leases.

Dorm Living for Professionals Comes to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO

"In search of reasonable rent, the middle-class backbone of San Francisco — maitre d’s, teachers, bookstore managers, lounge musicians, copywriters and merchandise planners — are engaging in an unusual experiment in communal living: They are moving into dorms.

Shared bathrooms at the end of the hall and having no individual kitchen or living room is becoming less weird for some of the city’s workers thanks to Starcity, a new development company that is expressly creating dorms for many of the non-tech population..."

Blackstone/Management don't have to actively promote living here to students. THE MANY SCHOOLS THAT STUDENTS ATTEND DO THE JOB FOR THEM by suggesting to their students that they look into renting here. That's why this place has become a dorm dump.

And, if you check the NYU website, you will see us listed as a place for some NYU grad students to live. https://www.nyu.edu/students/student-information-and-resources/housing-and-dining/on-campus-living/residence-halls/grad-housing.html.

If you don't think that this listing on an NYU website clues in many, many other NYU students about living here, then you need to have your head examined.

Some people are willfully blind.

The only reason there may possibly be fewer students is the growing high-profit/low-risk cottage industry operating illegal PCVST hotels catering to, at any given time, hundreds of unidentified transients lodged for short stays in previously chopped up residential apartments converted into dorms.

Plenty of students in my building! It's crawling with them. I don't care because I like their generation and they are the future of this Trump-fucked planet, if it survives the Trump-fucking.

Sometimes the students are noisy, but they will quiet down if you ask them politely. I'm an original tenant in my 70s and I can tell you with all honesty that over the decades (yes, decades) we have had more than enough drunks, domestic violence situations and rotten, stinking, marauding, destructive kids, all of whom are probably now around my age or a tad younger. Sure it was a nice place to live and the grounds were much more bucolic than they are now, but it wasn't rented out to high class folk. Just regular middle class working folks and they could get very ugly at times. Especially on a Saturday night when they'd had a few drinks too many. We also had suicides, assaults and child abuse instances. The demo that is here today is not that bad. Not bad at all, in fact. Too bad they are paying through the nose and can't afford to stay here long. I would love it if they could just stay here and raise their families like we could.

Even our owners wouldn’t say something that stupid.

Anonymous said...

We never had the noise problems years ago, because management (Met Life) would not put up with it. Wonder how much you would love the students if you had a dorm apartment below you for the last 8 years or so. First four years of noisy parties, then a couple of years of fruity smoke seeping up. As of late it has been quiet and odor free, but who knows how long that will last.
