Happy Easter!

It was a happy time, it was a mythical time--when Stuyvesant Town at Easter was filled with flowers and lovely landscaping. Yes, such a time did actually exist before Tishman Speyer came to own this complex. And now we have the above, a photo taken today of the Oval "garden" on Easter Day.

I wonder if poor landscaping constitutes a "diminution of services" under RS law and could be basis of rent reduction

Stuy Town Reporter said...

I doubt it, as it's not a service that necessary, like providing heat and water, etc.

NO! You were right the first time. It was a "mythical" time, that somehow, old residents seem to think was a Camelot before the arrival of the evil TS. As a resident for 10 years, I believe Stuy Town is much, much nicer than it was pre-TS. Unless, of course, you want it to be a retirement community, in which case, yes, the old Stuy Town was much better. No dogs, no young people, no "amenities", less landscaping, no walking on the oval. Yep, that was a much better time.

Wow, do you really believe that the Oval grass/garden area is "much, much nicer" than it was before?! It's devastated now and completely ugly. You can't be serious.

I think the Oval looks good, and it is enjoyed by more people than ever.
Now, if we can just buy our own apartments. How great would that be. It would reduce the number of transient renters and hopefully replace a lot of the "Cranks/old trolls" we have roaming around here who have nothing constructive to do with their time. Replace them with people who would actually take an active/constructive interest in Stuytown/PCV. People who would have some pride in their neighborhood. Instead of endless complaining. How about picking up a beer bottle or two lying on the ground, or some cig. butts. How about arranging a Sat morning grounds cleanup? That would be constructive, but NOOO.. We have cranks and trolls, just trying to make others as miserable as themselves.
Lets get rid of the CRANKS and Trolls and replace them with people who have a positive attitude

Again, I can't take anyone seriously who thinks the Oval "looks good." If anyone does think so, they are recent Stuy Town tenants who have no concept of how the Oval used to look. Once the Oval is opened up again, it will continue its descent into being a mosh pit, swampy, with large man-made pathways running through it, puddles everywhere, dog piss and turds (yes, I've seen dogs piss on the Oval grass area right next to sunbathers), and that blighted southern end where the Green Market is placed.

As for tenants taking pride in their community and its look, Tishman Speyer has seen to it that the community spirit here has been eradicated. And if you want to clean up dog turds around Stuy Town to make this place look nicer, you are welcome to it.

Every workday I walk through a significant portion of PCV to get to the STPCV shuttle on Ave. C. The state of disrepair of the grass and the landscaping is astounishing. By far the worst I have seen in my 30 years living in PCV.
As for diminution of services, I think a case could be made under DHCR rules. I read a couple of relevant DHCR Fact Sheets and while a particular type of landscaping is not an "essential service" the DHCR does not address the virtual destruction of landscaping that has occurred in the past few years and especially this year when the owner appears to not even putting down new grass this spring let alone traditional spring flowers. The only color (other than brown) is coming from the budding of trees , most of which were around long before TS and somehow survived their purge.

For every occasional "dog terd" I come across there are ~ ten times the amount of beer bottles (broken and whole) on the grounds. There are ~ hundreds of more cig. butts on our lawns and sidewalks then dog poop. Get real! I like the tree that decerated in tampons for Easter, that was a nice touch
I would be happy to walk the grounds with you any evening or weekend and lets actually do an unbiased real "report". Take your camera if you like and we can count dog poop and we can count cig, butts and beer bottles (broken and whole) and then you can report the TRUTH (you still remember what that is?). In fact, I think we should invite the Tenants Association (if you can find any memmbers of the board) to join us on our "fact finding mission". So they can also verify the truth.
This way the Cranks and Trolls can go away with their tails between their legs and they will have more time to spend on other non-issues.

STR>>"As for tenants taking pride in their community and its look, Tishman Speyer has seen to it that the community spirit here has been eradicated. And if you want to clean up dog turds around Stuy Town to make this place look nicer, you are welcome to it."<<<

So if I understand you correctly;
Now that TS is gone and community spirit was eradicated, we should not try to regain a posative community spirit, you are saying it's too late?
And you would rather coplain and do nothing to improve our complex.
You would rather point fingers, and turn tennants against one another. I guess it's lot eaiser to complain then it is to reach a working solution where all tennants can live with each other.
Those who can do, those who can't complain!

Cranks and Trolls? That's what people who remember how nice STPCV was pre-TS? What a crock! We obviously have troll of a different stripe prowling here. If you think the Oval and the property are better now than pre-TS, then you are obviously stupid or a liar. Also, it's not the tenants' job to pick up beer bottles and cigarette butts (except the one's who dropped them) that have been discarded by selfish, piggish rubes who think the world revolves around them. If I'm going to shovel someone else's shit (which I'm not) I want to be paid for doing the job, belong to a union and get sick days, vacation days, etc. This is not something that tenants should have to do. Though tenants shouldn't be making that kind of mess in the first place. What a breed of self-important, entitled assholes we have living here now.

TS is not gone yet.

TS hasn't gone away yet. They are still running the property until a real management company (Rose, I think) takes over. TS did, indeed, destroy the community spirit here - although that was started by MetLife for the years immediately before they sold the property - because they wanted to drive out the older folks, by fair means of foul, and market the place to the young "hip" set. That ploy failed so they just turned it into a dorm/transient flop joint and completely let the grounds go to hell. Their efforts to reinvent the landscape were so misguided, mismanaged and totally ridiculous that the result is what you see now. Now they don't even try to improve the grounds. Tishman Speyer have destroyed the grounds just as surely as a pack of vandals would. Tishman Speyer is the epitome of bad management, incompetence and avarice-driven blind stupidity. And those are just their good points. ;-)

Well there you have it. This person wants to be paid for making his neighborhood a nicer/better place to live.
It's everyones job living here to try to make it a better place. Well OK. You just sit there and complain. You then, are part of the overall problem. You are a crank/troll.

STR, you may be correct. Maybe STR will resurface and maybe they won't.
BUT, If we value our neigborhood, we should not sit back and point fingers at each others and complain.

Quick, Mr. Volunteer Anonymous! There are two dog turds on the gravel path area not far away from the Oval guard booth. Hurry up and pick them up before someone steps into them!

I DON'T WANT TO SIT AND COMPLAIN, BUT I REFUSE TO SHOVEL SOMEONE ELSE'S SHIT! IF WE COULD GET RID OF THE FILTHY PIGS WHO THROW BEER BOTTLE, CIGARETTE BUTTS, ETC. ONTO THE GROUNDS, THEN WE WOULD BE A LOT BETTER OFF. THESE FILTHY PIGS (AND THAT IS REALLY AN INSULT TO PIGS) SHOULD PICK UP AFTER THEMSELVES. YOU, MR. SELF-RIGHTEOUS VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE, GO OUT AND PICK UP AFTER THE FILTHY STUDENTS AND YUNNIES WHO ARE TOTALLY FUCKING UP THIS PROPERTY. MAYBE YOU ARE ONE OF THE OFFENDERS?

Cranks and Trolls are 2 entirely different things, and neither has anything to do with the matters at hand.

People who complain about the condition of the properties and the quality of life here are mostly speaking from experience. Nobody is ignoring change or the fact that younger people are moving in here. We were all younger people. Met Life didn't allow the conduct we see here these days, but you must understand (listen up Mr. Anonymous Crank Hater) that in the days when Met ruled the property, tenants were held accountable for their actions. If you chose to drink and get rowdy late at night, you ran the risk that your parents would be notified and your ass would be summarily kicked. Our current new residents have no such accountability, and to the contrary, the management purposefully avoids attempts at controlling their conduct, so the grounds are filthy, people don't curb their dogs and basically do whatever they wish.

Just because people take pride in their community and care about it's cleanliness, quality and safety doesn't make them a "crank" or "troll" by any measure. If you think otherwise, you're certainly not a desirable member of this community.

It always comes down to dog poop with you.
Something in your childhood I am guessing?

That's not important. What's important is did you pick up the two dog turds by the Oval guard booth. We're relying on you to clean up this place!

STR >>>> That's not important. What's important is did you pick up the two dog turds by the Oval guard booth. We're relying on you to clean up this place!<<<"

There was NO dog poop there. And the security guy (in car) said there was none that he came across since he came on duty (punn) for over 4 hours.

You just came across another problem. You are relying on others. Stop looking at "others" and do something constructive instead of complaining and lurking around with your $1500 camera and praying that maybe today you will come across some dog poop to take a picture of. LOL

Actually, the two turds were there yesterday. You weren't quick enough, as later when I passed by the place, someone had already stepped on them, squashing them into the gravel. Next time, more haste on your part would be appreciated. After all, we are relying on you to keep this area clean, picking up cigarette butts, paper candy wrappers, dog turds....
