Don't Fence Me In - A Necessary Evil?

The fence is permanent, it seems. At first I didn't like the idea of a permanent fence around the grass area of the Oval, but upon reflection it is the only way to go in a community where certain people just don't obey rules, and either use the lawn area as a path to get to the other side of the Oval (causing multiple dirt paths) or bring their dogs onto the lawn, with the resultant Fido pee and turds deposited here, there, and everywhere.

So far, things seem to be working, though I did spot a slob with a cigar sitting on a bench right near the open "gate" area of the lawn and letting his pooch meander inside the lawn from his illegally long leash. No doubt, there will be some ill-mannered dog owners who will try to get their dogs fully onto the lawn, and this is where we must speak up, even if it's just to inform security. Let's keep the lawn free of dog droppings and urine! The human and rat residue we can't do much about.

One beef: The presence of outsiders on the lawn. My estimation is that the lawn contains at the very least 20% sunbathers from the Lower East Side. Really, the lawn should just be for the use of Stuy Town/Peter Cooper residences. It gets very crowded on sunny hot days and the overuse of the Oval is a visual blight and contributes to the destruction of the grass.

There was plenty of ugly flesh to be seen sprawled over the lawns over this holiday weekend. They totally ignore the little fences around the lawns. Of course, why wouldn't they because isn't that what "entitlement" is all about?

Keep the fence up!

It's about time... the Oval lawn used to be beautiful..the centerpiece of Stuyvesant Town many years ago.

Recently, it started looking like crap by the first week in July since it opened to pedestrian traffic.

Resident ID is now required for the 2 large basketball playgrounds. Same should be for the Oval lawn.

Totally agree with both posters.

Listen, at least Rose , unlike TS, recognizes that there was an issue here with the Oval looking like the Sheep Meadow in the 70's (dust bowl). Re the lawns in general, I saw two just post college rubes lay out in the grass on the main level of my building without even a towel. I was about to say, hey, you are both lying on dogs sh*t smears but I then smiled, kept my mouth shut and walked away. Hey, we all just guests in the quad/dorm called ST.

All grassy areas need some type of fencing. There are cow paths across every stretch of stpcv grass that lends itself to shortening the walks of our lazy, slovenly, narcissistic neighbors.

Just wait until the summer "concerts" start and the Oval becomes saturated with hordes of people (mostly from outside) trampling what little bit of grass there is. They'll be leaving behind their beer bottles and cans, their cig butts, their Coney Island White Fish and all their dog turds. Can't wait! Thank God for air conditioners that can be turned up full blast to drown out some of the noise. The grass, however, doesn't stand a chance. So long as there is some money in it for Rose A$$ociates, they don't give a shit what happens to the Oval (or should I say what vaguely resembles the Oval).

There are too many people here. With 4-6 people in the dorms and as many as 8 people in hotels, there's not much chance of any success with the lawns. And if Rose continues the tradition of concerts and public-park activities in a private residential community, any attempts at getting back civilized life here are a waste of time. No one should have to use their air conditioners to drown out bs noise. People whose apartments don't face the Oval should be happy. And how are the food trucks chosen? They don't belong here. I'd rather see the old flea market than all this "luxury" crap. They can't restore even the atmosphere of the pre-TS Stuy Town. What's happened here is criminal. It's out of control.

Management really needs to make a choice: either fence off the green areas altogether or let people tromp across them--but, if they go for option #2, they need to put in permanent, attractive paths through the green spaces.

I, personally, vote for the former rather than the latter but, right now, we've got neither and it sucks.

There is a plethora of discarded furniture and mattresses ALL OVER THE PROPERTY! With all the so-called security cams all over the property, surely Security can see who is putting this stuff out and go after them. This place has descended to a level that is totally sickening. Rose is a totally impotent failure when it comes to managing the property. The students and transients and hotel people have just run roughshod over all the quality of life and turned it into a dumping ground. Our ballsless, toothless property management can't do a damn thing about it and probably couldn't care less anyway. How did this once very desirable, livable place become a dorm/transient slum?

I think Rose has been doing a fairly good job, given the resources they have at their command. The gardening does look appreciably better than when Tishman Speyer had it, and it's improving weekly. Also, there is more security with "boots on the ground" than before.

Problems still exist, though, including the dumping of furniture outside.

What's clear is that Rose is working from 1st Ave inward. The farther eastern reaches of both Peter Cooper and Stuy Town look pretty bad and are not being taken care of as much as the Oval area, and those areas near entrances on the west side of the complex.

The fenced-in Oval lawn is still holding up, though today my guess is that at least 1/3 of the young people sunbathing there were NOT Stuy Town residents. And I wouldn't be shocked if the number were as high as 50%. Pitiful looking, though, is the southern unfenced lawn which will contain the Farmer's Market. So the good with the bad.

Passing by the rental office today, I noticed, once again, that it's only young people who are coveting the Stuy Town. Those are the residents that Rose is going after, so perhaps they don't care that young non-residents are using the Oval Lawn and other facilities here.

Stuy Town became a dorm/transient slum because of that ugly idiot Rob Speyer and his fat-cat daddy and the devastation continues. The Speyers walked away instead of being treated as the criminals they are. Rose isn't here for us. Stuyvesant Town, the way it's supposed to be, is a nice memory.

You wanna party? Just stop by 435 any night around 2 am. Unfettered access, blaring music and flowing vomit. Awesome, Dude! Don't worry about the old and working fools who live there. They will be gone as soon as the RS laws expire and then we can like take over! Awesome!
