Oval Cafe Preview

The window covering at the forthcoming Oval Cafe (ex-Oval Lounge) went down today, accidentally I assume, and passerby residents were treated to a preview of what's been happening inside.  Nothing dramatic. The removal of the pool table and a dark-chocolate coat of paint at the bottom half of the interior walls.  Looks kinda ugly at the moment, but wait till everything shines on opening day, whenever that may be.  (This space has been in the process of being "refreshed" for quite a while.)

Rumors are already floating around about the installation of an oven, with either fresh-baked or heated goodies, to go along with your cafe latte, but I suspect some serious coffee machines.

I'm sure the income from the cafe will go towards reducing our rents. They do love their long time tenants here don't they?

This new gimmick is going to be do intrusive to the people living above. It's one thing to knowingly move into a building above a bar or restaurant, it's another to live in a residential community and have one erected below you over night. It's such a blatant disregard for the tenants, new and old.

Yes 3 37 but no one cares. No cared about the tenants at 7 am Sunday morning where the greenmarket is, no one cared about the people living near the ice rink.

The same tenants who complained about hane restaurant skate at the ice rink and shop at the green market. As long as it's not in my backyard...............

It seems that Rose Associates is becoming as blatantly contemptuous of tenants as Tishman Speyer was. This is very disappointing. I remember when TS was building the Oval Atrocities and the total disregard they had for the people living in those buildings. Will the money they rake in (if they even break even) go toward hiring more personnel to clean the buildings? Buy some washing machines that actually work?

Any guesses how this will relate to Oval Amenities? Like, will a monthly fee provide unlimited access? Or free with purchase?

This is a far cry from the Good Humor men with their refrigerated carts who sold ice cream at the playgrounds in the 1950s. At least they were seasonal, quiet, and didn't give off any fumes. I wonder how the Starbucks on First Avenue is going to like the competition. I know that previous Management forced them into sponsoring some athletic tournaments. Now this Management is competing with them.

This us just another example of managements's contempt for it's tenants.

I'm assuming management considers the Oval Cafe a win-win situation. They get some income coming in and provide at the same time a service to tenants who will, in part, really make use of the cafe and enjoy its proximity to the Oval. Bet you it's a success.

As for disregard for the tenants, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats the noise and disruption that tenants at Stuy Oval 5 had to face with the building of the lounge there. I'll never forget a woman tenant coming out and SCREAMING at the workers because they were doing drilling or whatever during the weekend. (If you remember, the amenities were behind schedule, so work continued on past normal work hours.) BTW, this woman was not a senior, but someone in her thirties or so.

Not sure at this point, but T&V hinted that it would be open to all residents, this based on what a American Leisure person stated.

You can't mention Good Humor without a mention of Sam the ice cream man. God bless him. He was always at the west end of the 20th st. Loop.

I can't be the only one that remembers him.

Throw in Officer Barry the crossing guard and Eddie McCormick the UPS guy while youre at. All good folks.

I think we should boycott all Rose enterprises. Where is the TA? Mr "wonderful" Goradnick. What a bunch of jellyfish.

If its open to all residents the current Oval Atrocity members lose exclusive usage to 1/4 of their space. Will the membership dues be discounted accordingly? STR and T&V will be busy these next few weeks! I wish Lux was still around to add his scathingly hillarious take on this.

What makes you think the other tenants are against it? Garodnick and the TA may be representing exactly what the tenants want, and you are the only ones complaining.

Blame Dan Garodnick for the commercialization of the Oval. His collapse on the greenmarket had led to the soon to be Oval cafe and whatever other commercial enterprise CW and Rose can imagine. Anyway, its old news; Dan is running for City wide office now and priciples must be compromised if he is to be successful.

GOOD POINT 10;58! EVERYONE here is always complaining about the TA and Mr. Garodnick but , and I'm being very honest, I've been here for yearssss.. I can tell you I know ONE person here , One , who was against the ice rink due to it being illegal and an annoyance to others.

Everyone I KNOW living here is / was very happy with the green market and the ice rink. Of course, they do not live near either. LOL

Good new guys!
Our Oval café will be dog friendly: Beacon-bits-cookies,
drinking fountain, sand box in restrooms...
Tips optional.

I think Oval Cafe will be better than those noisy, stinky food trucks, though I don't know why we need such a venue in the oval anyway while we have so many sust off campus. But then, greed and stupidity usually go hand in hand TS taught us that very well.

If all the people who were against these "amenities" actually got off their couches, went outside with a sign, and picketed, they would be making their opinion known to Management. Don't just bellyache here--storm the barricades.

Are you going to lead the charge? Don't you think that Rose/CW would not hesitate to take aggressive reaction? Well, I do. I just vote with my pocketbook. They don't get one brown penny out of me beyond my rent, which is a lot higher than most newer tenants think a long-time tenant would be paying!

LOL, I would so come and laugh at that. There's a cause on the level of say, the march from Selma to Montgomery (eyeroll).

Saw them putting in an oven today at the Oval Cafe. It was the size of about 8 large microwaves.
