Management has two priorities: 1) Making sure money is made, hence upgrading and filling up apartments is their goal. "Amenities" are important in selling the place, though few residents use them. 2) If someone needs medical attention, Public Safety will be there, if alerted.

Quality of life issues are not that important, however. They tend to be ignored, despite "the rules." So you will see a lot that isn't taken care of properly, and complaints will be met with a creative excuse and a smile.

"Peace and quiet" must be a cruel joke, though this property is sold that way. There can be no peace and quiet as ALL apartments must be upgraded, which includes the installation of an AC unit below the window. Aside from the continual construction about the neighborhood, there is a new and noisy subway extension being built along East 14 st and the shut down of the L line. "Choosing" to live in NYC, now the newest mantra, is a fabrication when the talk is of ST and PCV, which was traditionally quiet, with no construction noise.

Though money was always important, it is now more important than ever. Money rules many things, as you will find.

At this point, 30 years into living here and seeing many things, I can state that Management and their reps are BS-ing us. I can't say that loudly enough: We are being BS-ed. I don't see any genuine change. Sorry.

Oval Cafe -- A Private Enterprise???


Ever since the Oval Cafe sprung up, I thought that it was owned/operated by management, with only the staff being hired out to an entity like American Leisure.  Well, here's some new info that, if true, raises the concerns over the Oval Cafe considerably. On the TA Facebook page, a person posted that they were asked to leave the outside table area because their coffee was from Dunkin Donuts and not the cafe.  The cafe person who approached them (who was classified as "so rude") responded that, quoting the poster, "he paid a lot of money in rent for that space."  Huh???  Does this mean that we actually have a 100% commercial business INSIDE Stuy Town that is renting out from CWCapital???  Doesn't this change dramatically the circumstances of the existence of Oval Cafe?

Some may recall that, at the time of the sale in 2006, the NY Post had a magazine type article or insert regarding what different people (R/E pros, architects etc.) would recommendfor an ST makeover. There were some pretty wild ideas there but the overriding theme ofall of them was to commercialize the interior spaces of ST. That has been underway for sometime with the paid storage and with Oval Concierge. You may recall that the Concierge was located on First Ave in the legal commercial strip. TS got them to move it to its current location and got rid of them. OC is either owned oroperated by Abigail Michaels, business that does this stuff around the city. It is purely commercial, just like the cafe, the farmers market and the rink.

Having an outside vendor operate the enterprise doesn't change the fact that they're claiming accessory use. What kills them is the fact that they make no effort to bar outsiders from patronizing the business.

To set the record straight: The business that was on First Avenue was the Villager (and I'm surprised that no one had ever started such a necessary business here before). In TS's eyes, the Villager didn't present an upscale-enough image (I got that from Bill, the owner). TS forced out the business but not before an interim period in which Bill consulted for Oval Concierge (Abigail Michaels) and some of his people went with him for a while. Then Bill was phased out, and eventually his people disappeared from Oval Concierge

Do what I do, buy one lousy can of soda from the oval cafe. Then sit for hours at one of their tables doing work on the computer using their wi-fi. Once you get past moral objections to the cafe's existence, it's quite a useful place to get shit done.

I've been out there for 5 hours over 2 weekends, and I'm not affected by Roberts. T&V has pix of TA board members out there handing out flyers the TA printed along with volunteers the TA organized. I don't remember seeing you, though. Just saying...

You can go out there any/every single day of the week, too. I have! SO have a handful of others. ABBIE at Zeichner's has ALL of the flyers and materials you might need to educate (and dissuade) potential renters. DO IT!! Don't wait for the TA to organize everything. Have a bit of ambition. Meet a friend who will keep you company doing it. But DO IT! SO MANY people who actually signed up with the TA never even showed up, so the regulars had to cover their absence and do it by themselves. WHY? Because they care & wanted to DO SOMETHING! Put your money where your mouth is and just do it, even for only 30 minutes. Every little bit helps.

I have to speak up for Marsh here. For certain he puts in a significant chunk of his free time on TA and tenant matters. And does this without payment. He just may have a life outside of this, which I, and hopefully others, would grant him to live without criticism.

John Marsh leads by more than example: If every tenant expended 1/1000th of the time or energy that he did (for free) we'd never have to beg (yes... BEG!) for bodies or minds to assist on ANY of the TA's projects. When's the last time YOU volunteered for something? Each & every one of us has busy lives. But, this is our home, certainly everyone can find a few minutes (that's all it takes) to donate to this community. Before you dare to call out John Marsh for being in NJ (taking a moment to have a life), also remember that while in NJ, he cares enough to still continue to monitor & post on the TA's FB page. THAT'S devotion. Shame on you for judging harshly!

I totally agree with you 12:36 PM. Considering that most the affected tenants in this latest assault by CW/Campus Rock doesn't affect the majority of tenants, i.e., the longtime tenants who mostly make up the membership of the TA, it's nice of him and the other members of the TA who are volunteering to even bother with this. Why aren't the people who are getting the massive mid-lease rent increases out there picketing? I am a longtime rs tenant and, much as they would like to, they are not getting me out any time soon. I feel for the people who are being driven out by these greedy mutts, but I am not personally affected by it. Why should I go and picket at the Leasing Office? I have put in a little time there, but when I saw the total lack of turn out of the affected parties, I thought "Fuck 'Em. Let them fight their own battles."

SO don't make it just about the mid-lease rent increases! Or even the TA! Make it about EVERYTHING else: the QOL issues, the raping of the Oval, rampant bedbuggery, brown water, no laundry since October 29th (for 17 buildings), etc.. Make it about ANYTHING! By picketing & (most importantly) flyering & educating CW's new, potential renters, you hit them in the ONLY place that matters to them: their wallets. Fewer new tenants means less $$. It's simple math. THAT alone should yield ANYONE who lives here some kind of satisfaction!

Many of the tenants that will have to leave due to these foul mid lease increases are families and professional couples. What will replace them will be the standard college and just post college transients, funded by their parents, that TS and now, CWC, love so well. The Bro/OMG herds will increase even more so get ready for more trash, feces, bedbugs, no carpet compliance, noise and the constant roommate shuffle and moving that brings in tenants who frankly, don’t give a shit about the QOL here, as long as they can party in the EV, the Bowery, the LES, and Gramercy. Woo!
