Our landlord, BLACKSTONE, can't handle Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village. There is a lack of enforcement of certain "rules," and no amount of notice to this alleviates the problems. We are continually being told half-truths and fabrications. And we have no viable Tenants organization, despite our TA asking for dues all the time. So far, the politicians have proven to be basically useless. A typical New York story.
God! No! What the hell is wrong with the NYPD when they can beat up an old man for jay walking (something we ALL do), but the worst of the worst criminals literally get away with murder? Bratton had better get a grip on these out-of-control cops and teach them what policing is all about. Is this a result of Kelly's influence on the NYPD or just an isolated incident? I remember when Giuliani, the consummate Fascist, was in power and his despicable Police Commish, Howard Saffir, constantly terrorized innocent citizens by bursting into their apartments when they had no reason to and even terrorized a young man who had Down Syndrome during such a raid which turned out to be a case of the wrong address. Maybe most of the cops are good guys, but there sure as hell are a lot of bad ones and it is the Mayor and the Commish who set the tone. This is so sickening that there are times when I am ashamed to be a New Yorker. I hope Mayor DeBlasio gets these goons under control and he should do it soon. We have had enough Amadou Diallos and Abner Louimas to see us into infamy. We don't need to have 84-year old, non-English speaking old men beaten up to keep us on that sordid track of victimizing innocents. If that were my dad I would be beside myself. I'm beside myself now and I don't even know the poor old guy!
I believe the old man was roughed up because he pushed back on a cop, and then they all pounced. These guys need retraining and quick.
De Blasio has taken a cautious view of the incident so far:
“I’m waiting for all the facts and I haven’t gotten all the facts on the case, so I’m not going to comment on something until I have a better sense of it.”
We don't want people just randomly jaywalking all over the place, but sensible jaywalking has been an unofficial New York right for ages. And if you are stupid about it and place yourself in danger that's your business and your funeral or long-term and expensive hospital stay.
I think these cops were giving out $250 tickets, which is a hefty sum for most New Yorkers, unless they happen to the rich, who are probably taking taxis and limos, instead of walking. So once again, the poor and middle classes are being hit with a burden. And, in this case, getting a beat-down.
DeBlasio should just look at the photograph of the poor old man with his bloodied face and ask himself what more he needs to know. How would he feel if it were an elderly relative or friend of his? DeBlasio should not pussy foot when it comes to getting the NYPD under control because there are a lot of rogue cops who have literally gotten away with murder under the Kelly regime and if the good ones (who are in the majority) are going to be respected, then the shit has to be strained out and that is up DeBlasio and Bratten to do that and do it NOW. Never mind the "wait and see" crap. If his son, daughter or wife came home bloodied from a confrontation over jay walking (and given that they speak English and are young) would DeBlaz take a "wait and see" approach then? No. He'd be like a wild man and heads would roll. This guy needs to stop pondering situations and actually get his ass into gear!
"So once again, the poor and middle classes are being hit with a burden. And, in this case, getting a beat-down."
No excuse for a beat-down on an 84-year old man. Ever. How many of "New York's Finest" took part in that beat-down? Disgusting and sickening. I hope they all run into the likes of themselves when they are 84 years old, should they live that long.
Anon 10:55, I agree with you about De Blasio's response here. Way too low-key. But he still has time and should say something about this incident in the next couple of days, after he reviews the situation. If he just let's it pass without commentary, then he's slipping at the start.
It must be bad if the NY Post reported it in an anti-cop sort of way, but on the other hand, they aren't going to make de Blasio look good either. It literally had JUST happened when the Post reported it--indeed, the man's son was didn't even know what the cops had charged the father with yet and the other cops weren't talking b/c of the beating. So de Blasio had obviously just found out about it himself.
I can't help but think that if there wasn't a language barrier this would not have happened. Shame on the NYPD for not being fluent in Mandarin/Cantonese.

I'm assuming you are being pointedly jocular. No, the NYPD doesn't need someone on every corner fluent in Mandarin/Cantonese, but it needs to have cops who are sensitive to the fact that a New Yorker of a foreign background may not understand what is being said to them in English and hold off on the beat down.
Let's hope that most NYPD are of stable mind and this is an isolated incident of a few cops with serious anger management and need-for-dominating-control issues. Investigation needs to include looking into how the officers behave in other parts of their life because these personality traits have a list of victims is probably longer than this one elderly man. They did not even have remorse or care as he was bleeding. Sounds like Serious Personality Disorders of these cops.

Yet you can get on a Citi Bike and no laws apply to you????
