Where's the Salt?

The snow plows did a good job of clearing high snow from the pathways, but have left behind a slippery slide zone with packed layers of snow on the ground that have now frozen. Beware out there! Particularly around the Oval.

UPDATE 1/5/14: Today there have been several reports on the TA Facebook about slippery conditions out there in PCVST.  People have fallen.  And check out this incredible photo taken by a poster of a sheet of ice near the concierge at PCV:

This is completely UNACCEPTABLE.

This is what happens when you have jackasses running the show. Don't they get snow in Colorado? Duh!

I don't think salt works at the low temperatures we are experiencing today although they should run through the plows again because enough snow remains on the walkways to plow

I'm not sure this is true, Anon 11:10am...

I've layered salt on frozen ground and it always has melted the frost and made a nice puddle.

Compare and contrast: The VA Hospital on 23rd Street and PCV on 23rd Street.

VA Hospital: Their little snowplow and salt/sand spreader completely cleared the entire width of the sidewalk. Anyone on that side of the street will be able to walk with no obstructions. Lots of room for two wheelchairs to pass. This was done hours before the 11 a.m. deadline (since snow stopped in early hours of the morning).

PCV: Only a small path cleared on part of the street with snow/ice still coating the pavement. Just enough room for one person to walk comfortably. A little after 11 a.m., another pass was made with a plow. Still just about enough room for two people to pass each other.

This has been the situation for several years.

Salt cannot be spread only once if you want to maintain an ice-free sidewalk. The wind blows snow from the grassy areas and trees onto the pathways, which re-freezes because the original salt layer from 24 hours ago has dissipated. That's what creates these little patches of black ice. Also, I'm not going to say kids shouldn't throw snowballs because we all did when we were that age, but when they land on the (unsalted) sidewalk they re-freeze and create more ice.

Salt would be useless at these temperatures. It doesn't work below 15 degrees.

Maybe we'll get a plow MCI. OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY!!

The BEEP BEEEP BEEP of their industrial equipment has been going on most of the day on the Oval, "moving" the snow. It's 5:45 and they've been back for the last 3 hours. Just FOUL! BEEP BEEP BEEP! Somehow the old Stuy Town managed the snow without industrial equipment... But these people are clueless... ie: this is NOT an industrial park, people live here, and this crap doesn't belong here. They could put out a flag man and shut off the BEEP BEEP BEEP! But no, that would take people who have brains and use them. But no, we have the clowns.

They have not done a good job of this.

I work in mid-town (Park Ave)and went in today. All of the buildings had the snow completely cleared this morning (8AM). Admittedly, there are a lot more sidewalks and paths here but it always amazes me that the management, regardless of name, is unable to replicate that. Its the same thing just on a larger scale. They know how to do it because the pathways immediately in front of the building entrances are, for the most part, down to blacktop.

They also invariably fail to shovel out under the construction sheds, such as those on Avenue C and 23rd Street.

I have little doubt that they will be singing their own praises on a job that has ben rather poorly done.

The either salted and/or put sand down in right front of my building and it worked.

You don't think the salt works in low temperatures? Salt "works" everywhere else in the city! Leave it to Compass Crotch to fuck up something as simple as salt!

The grounds crew made sure that all the snow was removed from the patio at Oval Study.

Priorities anyone???

10 am i'm walking from 1st ave loop toward oval. sheet of ice, i almost fell several times. No salt. Thie is at 10 am, not 6 am. A senior citizen would not be able to take 2 steps without breaking their neck. I got back at around 10:30 and thankfully there with people walking around with buckets of salt. So it took until 10:30 for them to start salting today.

On another note.......damn there's a lot of yellow snow out there!

I too am shocked how badly thesidwalks and streets of stuy and pc v were cleaned of snow and ice.

Shameful. and the machine with the guy in it making all the noise, is doing nothing. I watched him for 15 minutes. doing nothing, just driving back and forth, creating pollution and noise.

" A senior citizen would not be able to take 2 steps without breaking their neck."

That is EXACTLY what they want to happen!

The temperature is due to drop well below freezing tonight, no doubt making the dangerous conditions even worse. How about if all of us who comment here start phoning management now to notify them of dangerous spots? Keep a record. Then, if someone gets hurt, management will be liable for not correcting a hazardous situation.

Anon 12:34pm. Do you actually think that Compass Rock MisManagement doesn't know there are many slippery spots on the walkways of STPCV? They know; they just don't care. There are many posts on the TA's Facebook page - which Compass Rock MisManagement reads - complaining about that very fact. Those posts will serve as proof and ensure that MisManagement will be held liable for their negligence should anyone be injured. I, for one, have no intention of spending my time informing them of things that it is THEIR job to know.

PHONE MANAGMET? I CAJT AFORD ALL THESE CALLS TO THE HONDURAS!!!!!

Anonymous said...

There's a bag of some sort of de-icer inside my vestibule. I might have to do some guerrilla sanding if the pavement gets hazardous.

Hey Caps, not to worry, CR drones are on the job.

WHY WOULD MANAGEMENT read the Facebook page if they didn't give a hoot?

Makes no sense.

Anonymous said...

Anon 6:44 - When have you experienced Management giving a hoot?? The answer is that you haven't because they don't!!

However, it is known that they read the TA's Facebook page which made the fact that they undoubtedly saw all the complaints there and, additionally, received several phone calls about the treacherous, slippery walkways in STPCV and still did NOTHING about it even more egregious and revolting. As for why they read the TA's Facebook page, it's very simple: KNOW YOUR ENEMY. Made no mistake about it, CWCapital/Compass Rock and the tenants who live here are, without doubt, enemies.
