The Madness of Oval Events Revisited

Beautiful days are upon us, cool and sunny, and they won't be here long. So, you want to enjoy the Oval while we have such delicious weather? Well, today you had to compete with "Fall Family Carnival." Okay, we'll give one to the kiddies to make them happy. So perhaps tomorrow, Sunday, you can relax and enjoy the weather at the Oval.... Wrong! Tomorrow the Oval will be hostage to TWO football games playing on a screen you won't be able to see clearly. From 1pm to 7:30pm!

Truly, truly, the people who arrange these things are insane. There is no other possible explanation for this madness and ramming into residents' stunned minds the concept that there's "always something happening in Stuy Town."

Can Lady Maya follow Radu's example and leave?

Yes! Please! Buh-bye Maya!

Lady Maya is a fucking joke. Sorry. But she has single handedly turned our beautiful parks into a trashy fair ground and for what? The events are poorly attended and attract more negative attention than good. Hit the road Lady!

ProShred Sunday 9/16 at two locations. On the 14th Street loop, 10-2, and on Peter Cooper Road, 2:30-4. Possibly the only useful activity sponsored by Management.

I still think that this letter, dated 5/3/2012, by James Roth to the T&V, says it all about ALL of these so called “Accessory Use” events, concerts, enterprises, etc. that are located at the Oval.

“To the Editor:
It is unfortunate that Council Member Garodnick has gone along with CW and Rose in sidestepping the zoning rules (and apparently ignoring the “clearly incidental” and “customarily found” requirements found in the Zoning Resolution definition of Accessory Use) to allow the return of the greenmarket to the Oval under the pretense that its availability will be limited to “residents and their guests only,” and the return of food trucks at “special events.”
Notably, “special events” are not defined so, presumably, anything that CW and Rose declare to be a special event, perhaps even the greenmarket, will qualify. By agreeing to this pretense, the Council Member has ignored the primary complaint about the greenmarket – its location on the Oval – and opened the door to CW and Rose further exploit the Oval as a commercial and event space, without limit, merely by claiming the activities are limited to “residents and their guests only.”
According to the Council Member, management has agreed to add language to its perimeter sidewalk signs and on any of their materials referencing the market that the market is for “residents and their guests only” and are in the process of correcting any outstanding public references to the market being open to the public. While GrowNYC has removed the reference to the market being open to the public, it contains a map of the market’s location and a link to management’s website for more information and, as of April 29, one week before the market’s opening, neither that site nor management’s own site has added the language for “residents and their guests only” or any other language that would indicate that it is not open to the public.
During his tenure, Council Member Garodnick has, generally, represented the ST/PCV community well and has done many good things on behalf of it. His acquiescence in CW and Rose’s charade to continue the presence of the greenmarket on the Oval is not one of them and will only embolden the property’s current mercenary management to create more Oval annoyances, of course — wink, nod – for “residents and their guests only.”

Dear Blogger ... Thanks! And please keep on publishing about the events and noise on the Oval. I live on an upper floor and this stuff broadcasts into my home! It's like living at a perpetual street fair. And do you know, at 1 time living on the Oval was considered "fancy" and more desirable than other parts of the complex? I would LOVE to live anywhere but the Oval because of the non-stop noise from their events and how it invades and pollutes my home. Just clueless. But you keep up the good work!
