How to Drive Seniors Out of Stuy Town

In case you missed the Oval "concerts" this summer....

You know, there are still just too many rent-stabilized seniors living in Stuyvesant Town. Probably a bunch are living around the Oval. Even those 30/40/50 somethings are a pain in the ass if they are RS tenants. So here's a gift from Tishman Speyer: Music to Make You Wish You Lived Someplace Other Than Stuy Town or How to Pack More NYU Students into Stuy Town

The "musicians" that TS brings in for these summer "concerts" are worse than the ones who play on the platforms of L Train at Union Square and Sixth Avenue stations. The noise (no, it's not music) they make can be heard all over the complex so it must be absolute hell for those living on the Oval. The Oval used to be the preferred location to live, but now it is a must to avoid!

Oh stop it.

Granted this particular performer wasn't my cup of tea either but they had a good variety of music this year. Much better than those doo-wop cover bands of the past. And the concerts only last 30-45 minutes.

If you want complete and utter silence move to a cemetery. Some of us still have some life left in us and enjoy a few of the events here.

Next you'll be complaining the squirrels are messy or the broccoli at the farmer's market is too green.

Shees.

Let's not forget the sound checks.

I know. The music isn't THAT bad. Try and find something like this at another Manhattan property that caters to its residents like this.

Enough! Arguing is for the 'other' blog!

"[T]he concerts only last 30-45 minutes."

If by 30-45 minutes you mean 60-90 minutes then, yeah, the concerts last only 30-45 minutes.

"If you want complete and utter silence move to a cemetery."

A cemetery now? When you trot out this tired old chestnut of advice on the LL blog it's "move to the mountains!"

You have to be kidding! I would never want to find another Manhattan property that "caters to its residents like this!"

Wow, at least the people here don't talk to themselves or anything.

Is there anything you RS people will NOT complain about?

Yes! Beautiful day, isn't it?

You RS people make me sick. I pay more than DOUBLE what you do for an apartment 3/4's your size and help keep your j-51's coming in. The management treatment, maintenance, and everything else you get from ST is the SAME as what I get, so quit your bitching already!

Yes, but you elected to move into such a situation. RS tenants have been here for a while, some for most of their lives or all of their lives, and have lived here with the understanding that Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village represented affordable middle-class housing. This is what part of the fight is about, and I wish you could benefit from such affordability, too.

Boo-hoo. The issue isn't how long anyone has lived here- seniority does not supercede respect. You RS people walk around here with sticks up your asses as if we MR's are the reason for your misery.
And yes, I did 'elect' to live here with no regard for how snobbish my RS neighbors would be. Do you know how many RS people really do have other residences and claim Stuy Town as their own the 'majority' of the time and abuse the RS laws?

Stuy Town Reporter said...

I don't think that MR tenants are a problem at all. I'd love to see you pay the same as RS tenants pay. Most RS tenants do live here, btw. Otherwise, Tishman Speyer would have already weeded them out.

I see it this way. It's quite simple. We do not live in a public park. Public areas are for outdoor concerts. The oval is residential. If you lived in a home and your neighbor had a band performing in his backyard at the noise level of Stuytown concerts you could call the police.
I say we organize some concerts in Tishman and Speyer's backyard. Maybe some hard rock or latin bongos!
