Welcome to Slum Town! CWCapital's Masterful Reinvention of Stuy Town/Peter Cooper Village into the Projects

With the removal of the greenery and flowers around the western part of the Oval, CWCapital has done what no other landlord dared to do: turn this place into what could easily pass as the projects. Since there are brilliant minds working for CWCapital and its management auxiliary, CompassRock, one can only assume that there is a reason for this dramatic change that those of us with lower intelligence and dimmed sensibilities cannot begin to comprehend.  Perhaps a new advertising campaign proclaiming the virtues of project living at market rate pricing. Rumors that bleacher seating will be built in this area, with a spectacular view of the lawn and Stuy Town's bikini beauties, are regretfully unfounded.

Already alerted to the changeover, Pedro Jiminez headed up this sweltering afternoon from the last remaining ethnic block in the Lower East Side with his shaved ice cart to service Stuy Town customers, but was stopped by Public Safety when they noticed his cart did not state "For Residents and Their Guests Only."

"Rules are rules," the distraught Jiminez was told firmly and escorted out of the complex.  Stuy Town residents and their guests need not worry, however. Oval Cafe will be having its own shaved ice service and, beginning in the hot month of July, King Cobra beer will be sold at the cafe.

EVENING UPDATE:

Photos taken later in the day of CWCapital's decorative reinvention of Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village into the projects:

Hmm... Could the diabolical plan be to have Stuy Town/Peter Cooper Village condemned as a slum beyond repair, torn down (preceded by an evacuation of all residents), to be rebuild as massive high rises commanding extraordinary steep rents, worthy of the wealthy foreigners who are buying up apartments in the latest high rises in Manhattan?  What fiendish genius, if so!

Go Pedro Jiminez! Funny, there is never an ID check at the Oval CafĂ©, supposedly a resident accessory that is available only to “Residents and their Guests”. All rules are equal, but some rules are more equal than others

OH. MY. GOD.

Why does it surprise you they'd squash out an authentic New York tradition? They have $9 cold cut sandwiches at Oval Cafe! (Calorie Queen Maya doesn't eat those either.)

Is this a true story about the ice man?

No, but can anyone prove it didn't happen!

Your photos are alarming. I've noticed the greenery removal on my way to and from work, but I didn't realize this was all over the complex. I am really confused and saddened that they took it away. Not only the aesthetic, but homes and refuges for the local wildlife is now destroyed. No, not just pigeons and squirrels. There are many other species that called those plants their homes and hideouts. As for what reason, I would guess they are going to plant something else, but it just seems pointless to me to keep replanting all of the time.

There is a creeping oligarchical fascism taking over America. The CWs, Tishman Speyers, Bloombergs, Wall Street crooks, RE cabals et al. are taking step after step to destroy the very fabric of our society. They decimate our pension funds, savings and are throwing us out of our homes. There will be a backlash. Most of us are sick of these blood-sucking parasites and they can only prevail for so long. I foresee a very ugly future for America unless these fascists are reined in soon.

It didn't happen? Hey! That's Sean Sullivan's line!

Give poor CW a break. Maybe they just plain don't know that the hell they're doing and they're just trying to pretend that they do. You can understand that, can't you? Speaking for PCV, I can tell you that the areas close to Ave C still look devastated by Sandy. (God only knows what's coming this fall.) And the areas in front of the little fountain close to 1st Ave look like crap. The only areas that look good now are the ones that have been fenced off (fenced off like they all used to be, remember?) And the areas where the dogs pee & crap and where people play, they're either barren or all torn up. So have some pity on CW, won't you? They have a tough situation they've inherited and of course, it's not easy pretending to yourself & the outside world that you really know what you're doing...when you don't.

The newest slogan: Mo Better!

Big part of CW's problem is lack of communication. Tell us what is going on. I see work being done on the basements in PCV & also see washing machines being delivered to basements. So why is there no updated info being given to residents????? Also, tell us about the Oval lawn. Why is it being ripped up??? Just answer some basic questions. This is Communications 101. What is with these people. Communicate !!

Their MO is that information is power. Their PR team and Legal department do, if at all, “rolling disclosures” about the problem issues here. Much better for them to post insane Bro Twitter comments such as “Really enjoying taking night walks in StuyTown and Peter Cooper Village. Such a nice, safe place to live” and insane OMG Twitter comments such as “Happy girl walking through Stuyvesant Town. It's hot out here and I love it! I love you NY”. Pathetic. WHO are these people?

They forget we are clients. THEIR clients. And they provide a service, and do a terrible job. I've lived in quite a few places in the city and I have never been so disappointed as I am living in Stuy Town. The majority of the staff are rude on the phone, if you can get them to grace you with a returned phone call, they don't maintain the buildings, or the grounds, and force all types of things we don need on us. Like the nonsense events in the Oval. Bring back oval kids. They were useful. Now to see the beautiful park destroyed? I would never, ever, recommend anyone move here.

Compost Crock is now an absentee landlord. Nobody knows where their management office (and I use the term "management" loosely) is located. The property is going to hell, tenants can't get hold of anyone in "Resident Services" (what a misnomer!) and the leasing office is suckering in more and more lambs to the slaughter every day. This is really grist for a documentary-maker's mill!

Thanks for the pic of the lamppost with the extension cord (I haven't followed it to its end to see where it goes). After the broken streetlights around that lawn were brought up at the Town Hall, nothing was done about fixing them. I called maintenance yet again, and a couple of guys showed up to check on the streetlights. They're still not working. That was a few weeks ago.

WELL NEED THEM NEXT WEEKEND BECAUSE SOUL ASYLUM TOLD THE WHOLE DAMN WORLD THEY ARE PLAYING A FREE CONCERT IN STY TOWN. I walked past that new landscaping part of the Oval and got blasted in the face by a worker using a leafblower--ON LOOSE SOIL. Nice job douchebag. Blind leading the blind.

I looked at the work they're doing on the west end of the Oval, and it looks to me (based on recent plantings nearby) that they're simplifying the landscaping, and planting ground cover plants (similar to the old Ivy beds we used to have). Will make a great home to all the rats currently hanging out by Oval Cafe.
