The prices for entry to Stuy Town's Ice-Skating Rink have just been posted on the pcvst.com website. First impression: They are somewhat troubling. For one, Town & Village reported that "residents would get to skate for free for an hour each day the rink was open." This was a verbatim rendering of what, purportedly Adam Rose told T & V, so either the newspaper got it wrong or there was a change in pricing structure since the paper came out. Big surprise then. Also the free times are placed at odd hours. Sunday from 9-10 AM. That's not too bad if you are up that early and ready to go on a Sunday, but the other free time period, Wednesday 3-4 PM, is simply insulting. You may as well not give out any free time.

Otherwise, the cost of entry is $7 per day, which is not bad, I think. (I don't ice-skate, so I'm not familiar with typical rink entry fees. The rink at Bryant Park charges no fee, while Rockefeller Center does.) But I do wonder if "per day" will really be "per day" or if once you leave the rink you will have to pay again to go back in. There's something called a "season pass" going for $100. Three and four season passes are mentioned, so that means, yes, the rink will be a regular feature in Stuy Town as long as CW Capital is calling the shots.

Ice-skating lessons are costly, it seems to me. $40 for a 25 minute session, which includes admission, but not rental of skates. A "cafe area" is also mentioned, which will not be giving away free food, obviously.

The rink is open (for a fee, excepting those two hours already mentioned) to PCVST residents and their guests. No mention, however, of key cards being checked or any other filtering of outsiders who are not guests.

Then there are those waivers of legal action against "Ice Rink Events, ST Owner LP and Rose Associates, Inc., and their respective subsidiaries, affiliates, partners, officers, directors, employees, agents, equipment suppliers and volunteers arising out of the Skaters' use of the ice skating rink and all surrounding areas."

And, of course, no Oval event could exist without its publicity purpose: "Skaters permit Ice Rink Events to use any photograph or video recording taken while in or around the ice skating rink venue for publicity, advertising, or any other commercial purpose."

Boycott this slap in the face. When is the TA going to file papers with the DHCR re: diminution of service?

Anonymous said...

Good question.

TA? Councilman Garodnick? Are you listening?

This is CLEARLY a decrease in services and tenants want to know what's going to be done about it.

Boycott it?

Those opposed, and I'll bet there are plenty, should protest outside it. Every day.

This whole thing is just a PR stunt for Rose/CW. Why do you think they're putting it right next to the fountain and the forthcoming holiday tree? They're hoping the local media will highlight this as a "fun holiday activity".

Why not turn the tables on them, create some major negative PR - dozens, maybe hundreds of residents gathering and shouting NO WAY, NO THANKS!

I'm there for protest. We will need at least 50 people.

What's to become of playground 10 after ice skating season ends?

I presume this is going to be a permanent structure.

Rose is skating all over it's tenants. This is clearly an illegal commercial venture open to the public, and in a residential zone. If Garodnick can't stop this, then I venture he can't wipe his own bottom.

I'm totally with the idea of a protest. This is the utilization of community space for commercial purposes. They should not be allowed to get away with it.

I don't think/hope so, as Aggreko deals in temporary cooling systems.

How are things progressing with the "let's try to work with Rose to make things better" approach?

What new words of Wisdom do we hear from our feckless councilmen?
Exactly what is his stance on this ice skating rink? Don't tell us that you are "looking into it".
For once, just try, try to be straight up and tell us what you think of the Ice skating rink?
Councilmen, either you are for it or against it? Which one is it? Don't tell us you need more time to research this, just tell us what you think? Don't worry Councilimen, you will still be able to change your mind at a later date!

Question:
Lets see... 100 tenants ( With 2 guests?) 300 skaters all day @ $7= $2100 per day.
If the 300 stay all day how will the next 100 skaters
get in? all day, and so on... Out of control.

Even though the skating rink, food trucks, Greenmarket, Oval Amenities, etc. are all UBER-MARKETING SCHEMES INTENDED TO LURE THE UNSUSPECTING INTO RENTING HERE, I'm sure CW Capitol Offense and Rose Ripoff Management still want to see them make as much money as possible. Who wouldn't? The more money in your pockets the better, right CW, Rose? So, that's why I'm doing my small part and BOYCOTTING ALL of the money-making activities that they have introduced here over the last few years. And I recommend that everyone else living here do the same. It's all I can do, other than making my voice heard on forums like this one and asking our Tenants' Association and Councilman Dan Garodnick to look into what the zoning laws pertaining to STPCV permit, which I have done.

And to any one reading this who is thinking about moving to STPCV, I STRONGLY urge you to think again. I have lived here a long time, but if I could afford to get out, I would. Our soulless, greedy owner and management company are using every gimmick they can come up with to turn what once once a lovely, quiet, well-kept, middle-class, residential community into an ATM machine. All they want is to extract money from the property and are NOT putting sufficient funds back in to solve the many ongoing, quality-of-life problems we have. It's takes outing them in public forums like this and articles in NYC newspapers to make them do the right thing. And that doesn't always work either because MONEY is what drives them. Tenants have been getting ripped off here in every way imaginable since this property was sold in to Tishman Speyer and company in 2006. So, anyone thinking of renting here, be smart. Take my advice. Spare yourself the endless aggravation and go rent somewhere else.

"Lets see... 100 tenants ( With 2 guests?) 300 skaters all day @ $7= $2100 per day."

That comes to $189,00 for the 3 months that the skating rink will be around.

With all that extra money, CW Capitol Offense and Rose Ripoff will be able to pay for a few more SECURITY GUARDS who will actually walk the grounds and do their job - PROVIDE SECURITY - inside of watching us on cameras in a little glass room or sit in their Security vehicles with their eyes glued to their cellphones! For one thing, CW Capitol Offense and Rose Ripoff, those new patrolling Security guards would be able to stop dog owners from allowing their animals to shit and piss all over the Oval, which according to YOUR VERY OWN RULES, they are NOT permitted to do, but do do (pun intended) because you DON'T ENFORCE ANY OF THE RULES AROUND HERE and have turned this place into a free-for-all for anyone to do whatever they feel like doing. Heaven forbid that you offend any tenant living here, especially the high rent paying tenants, by actually making them behave themselves!

Or maybe CW Capitol Offense and Rose Ripoff can afford to REPLACE OUR HORRIBLE WASHING MACHINES? Or how about hiring MORE CLEANING PEOPLE for our DIRTY buildings?

CW, Rose, get in touch. I have LOTS of ideas how you can use that money to make this place better! Oh, wait. That's not what you're looking to do is it?! You're looking to turn this property into Bank of Stuyvesant Town & Peter Cooper Village and keep making withdrawals, rather than deposits.

Anyone thinking of living here would be well-advised to look elsewhere. Spare yourself the endless aggravation and go rent somewhere else.

You people are all miserable! Maybe you should put on some ice skates and smile! It's sad that you all have this much free time on your hands to complain. You're all lucky to be alive and healthy. Enjoy life while it lasts!
