It's Melting ... and Autumn Leaves ... and JoyRide

Reportedly the NYPD turned up last night at Playground 10, where Stuyvesant Town's controversial new ice-skating rink is being finished, and whatever noise complaint was the impetus, it mandated the shutting off of a generator that kept the ice inside the rink solid. This morning the ice-rink was flooded, with water seeping out beyond the rink's actual walls.

Another problem: Autumn leaves. Yes, they do fall, and they fell all over the rink. Clean-up time and expense.

If this ice-rink has a fixed budget, the budget will certainly go over, with what is turning out to be a fiasco for CW Capital in both financial and publicity terms. (NY's newspapers are carrying articles about the controversy, and yesterday the city's local CBS News aired a segment about the rink twice.)

Oh, and despite the pronouncement from the Department of City Planning and Councilman Dan Garodnick that the interior of Stuy Town is not zoned for food trucks, the Joyride truck turned up both yesterday and today.

Regarding the presence of this food truck, residents should contact Dan Garodnick's office at 212-818-0580. If the food truck is making noise, you can also call 311. You will receive a Service Request number, and the matter will given over to the 13th precinct.

Location-wise, the food truck is currently near 1 Stuyvesant Oval, 10009. You can also call the precinct direct at 477-7411 and ask to speak to the Community Affairs Officer. Management is trying to make sure that the Joyride truck is not making noise, but at this point the issue is not noise, per se, but the illegal nature of a commercial enterprise like this food truck being situated in a residentially zoned area. That is the primary complaint.

Rose obviously considers itself to be exempt from the laws of the City of New York. The Joyride truck still shows up, we have no heat in spite of it being in the low 40s outside. Let's see if the greenmarket shows up on Sunday. I want more than lip service from Dan Garodnick. I want action. I don't care what office he's running for next, he won't get my vote unless he puts his money where his mouth is on the issue of Rose's blatantly violating the laws of the the City of New York. We tenants are sick to death of living with the lawlessness and contempt of a corrupt and inept landlord/managing company.

It was off electricity last night and very loud.

This morning one of Rose's people was speaking to the sales person inside the Joyride truck about any noise problems that may arise, so the noise issue is being monitored. But, as I posted, a noiseless food truck is still not legal inside Stuy Town according to the Department of City Planning and our councilman, Dan Garodnick.

Was it Lady Maya???

Why would Joyride want to be here? They know it's illegal.

Stuy Town Reporter said...

No, it wasn't Maya.

It's LADY Maya, thank you. Ruler of all intrusive gimmicks.

Joyride's been chased away from other locations. Now it's time for them to leave "Stuytown Circle." What'll it take!

Why don't we have a contest!
Let's all pick a date that we think they will start to dismantle the rink!
My idea, I go first.
Dec. 3rd.

How did CW intend on keeping all those leaves from falling into the water and freezing into the ice like fossils? How are they going to keep the leaves off the rink period?

Joyride doesn't come to Stuy Town, they come to Stuytown!

I don't think it will happen until the planned end of the rink when February is passed. Even if it gets shut down.

When MetLife ran the property (pre-Rose) it was a no-frills, comfortable and affordable almost perfect place to live ("perfect" being very subjective!) There were trees and flowers in the Oval and all over the property. It was truly an oasis and refuge from the hustle and bustle of the City. The washing machines and dryers worked (and were reasonably priced); the buildings were cleaned on a regular basis; garbage did not pile up inside and outside the buildings (except on sanitation pick up days when the bags of garbage were hauled to the curb); noise laws were enforced so that people could enjoy the quiet enjoyment of their homes, as stipulated in their lease. It was very no frills and ticked along as close to like clockwork as is humanly possible. MetLife turned a profit running it like that. Why can't Rose run it in the same manner? Surely it is not beyond their capabilities? We don't need all these useless bells and whistles they're foisting on us for "marketing" purposes. This place used to market itself very nicely, thank you!

The rink is not happening. The weather is too warm and the machines are too loud. Now there are 40 trees worth of leaves in the water they have to pick out before they can freeze it and the whole tank is leaking water.

CW Capital! WOOT!

We need Triumph the Insult Dog to come down from OWS and Poop all over it! Was watching Dave Attell’s Old Porn show on Showtime (very funny adult show by the way) and I think Joyride seems a natural title for one of the vintage porn films that Dave and a guest will review in the future. It also fits in on what this truck does to our community.

I think CW will cut their losses and run rather then see this eye-sore sit there and have to pay rent for all that machinery.
With temp's this mild, the electric meters that feed these machines will be spinning faster then the speed of sound. That's if they did not jury-rig the feed and bypass the meters...... Maybe a call into coned is not a bad idea....

Knowing Rose and CW....if trees make leaves, well.. just cut 'em down.

Just watch.

These people are ruthless inconsiderate slime.

Anonymous said...

If you want to get rid of the leaves, just chop down the trees. They're getting old anyhow—replace them with younger, hipper models. If they don't last, Rose can easily find replacements, may even cramming two or three into the space taken up by one of the old trees.

I think STR is correct. That pile of dreck will sit there all Winter even if it never opens. After all, why would it be any different than all of the other garbage littered around the complex?

CW Capital, Rose Associates = Rocket Scientists. NOT!!
Try to get the buildings cleaned and the washing machines to work Rose and CW. Stop trying to run a 3-ring circus here! Barnum and Bailey do it so much better! Bring on the clowns!

Anonymous said...

It's "Bring IN the Clowns".

I should talk, I am the king of typos!

Rose and CW Capital won't let this eyesore sit around all season to function solely as a monument to their failure and inept decision making. It already looks like a meth lab, why not use it as one. CW Crystal anyone?

“You cursed tenants of the buildings around playground 10. Look what you've done! I'm melting! melting! Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought that powerless tenants like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? Oooooh, look out! I'm going! Oooooh! Ooooooh!”

Anyway, for now at least.

Anon @ November 11, 2011 3:09 PM,

They bring them in then they bring them on. Regardless, they are all clowns and I think we are all sick of this circus.

Anyone notice that they snuck up with a $9 increase on the A/C contract part of the rent bill? How much electricity are they wasting with the Oval Atrocities that hardly anyone patronizes? And trying to freeze the unwanted ice skating rink? How much did it cost them to instal all that crap, including the cables strung through trees and attached to buildings like the old tenement clothes lines? How much did it cost them to tear up the astro turf and how much will it cost them to replace that in the spring? I am guessing that all these costs amount to a lot more than it would cost them to clean the buildings and replace the stinking, useless MacGray Manglers. What assholes! Go away Rose. You fail big time!

I would love to hang them on the A/C upcharge but it is dictated by the City. They could certainly eat it but no landlord does.

Just leave your lights on all day. That will cost them far more than the nine bucks and bulbs are still cheap.

Please do NOT leave your lights on all day. It's wasteful. Please. I already despair of what we all are leaving behind for the next generations to come; let's not make it worse than it already is or has to be.

Not to mention, we have to conserve power so we have enough to run those huge chillers for the skating rink. They pull a lot of juice so if y'all wouldn't mind turning off just one light and unplugging the fridge for an hour a day, Rose & CW would be most appreciative.

See you on the ice!

Those huge chillers are a perfect example of how CW/Rose wastes valuable resources. We don't get sufficient heat in winter, we have laundry equipment that is totally garbage and unusable for the most part, our buildings are hardly ever cleaned and yet they have money to waste on a fucking stupid ice skating rink that is just going to cause more and more problems and bad feelings between tenants (especially those living on the Oval near the damned thing) and management. Rose, get a clue for pity's sake!

Don't ask me to conserve energy and recycle so long as this crap such as the ice rink, food vending trucks and other oval crap is polluting the environment and gobbling up electricity.

Next summer......

Shake Shack on the Oval.

Don't laugh. It's coming.

Ever hear the expression that two wrongs don't make a right? Come on people, aren't we better than this? Can't we be better than this? Please?

There's no point in recycling here. All the cans and bottles, etc., are contaminated by the lazy idiots who don't wash them first and who put foodstuffs in with them. The Sanitation Department rejects dirty stuff like that and it goes into the general garbage headed for the landfills. In order for recycling to work it has to be done right and our landlord and the new tenants are not interested in doing that. The recycling efforts here are just a sham and a shame!

Commercial Free Oval said...

The zamboni is out circling the rink and the installation of a row of vending machines in the tent looks to be near completion. Management has installed Christmas trees and assorted shrubbery in a mostly failed effort to hide the eyesore it has created. Signs are advertising the grand opening - 9AM - Saturday.

Meanwhile, on the political front, no word from the Council Member on the status of the DOB inquiry. It appears they they have blown him off in much the same manner as Rose did with the food trucks from the outset and with he greenmarket after the Planning Department advised that it was illegal. Maybe he thinks that if he ignores it it will just go away. Those who care about keeping the oval commercial free need keep his feet to the fire. Continue the 311 complaints. Go to the Tenants Association meeting on December 3 and let him know that you want an answer.

The response of the city to this shows that they, like Rose and CW, don't care about the residents of ST and PCV and makes the Council Member appear ineffective.

That's ok. We will remember Dan the Man at the ballot box. If he thinks he is going to get away with this so easily, he had better rethink his strategy. We're not all as stupid and/or naive as Dan the Man thinks we are.
